They are in a bit of a mess - no doubt about it. I've been pretty sure for a while that we're in for a hiding down under next winter. But I've now shifted from pessimism to quiet confidence. We're clearly OK though nothing special and the Aussies only have 12 months to get their act together.

At the moment, their batting is abysmal. Journalists are confident their bowling is top drawer, but 244/10 and 540/8 in Perth doesn't quite reflect that.

At the moment, their batting is abysmal. Journalists are confident their bowling is top drawer, but 244/10 and 540/8 in Perth doesn't quite reflect that. The batting I think has the potential to bounce back but the problem is that they have no 'glue' in there. They have ton of aggressive batsmen and if they come off they'll win a game but they are just as likely to fold like a deck of cards. There's a lack of grit and class in there which is unusual for an Aussie side plus Smith seems to be suffering from Captain's syndrome where the extra responsibility sends his form down the toilet. Khawaja I quite like but 3 is probably too high for him. I've always thought Warner is quite overrated as a Test Player - too one dimensional however explosive that dimension can be while Burns is a poor man's Warner. They need to change the balance. The bowling is average. Starc is world class but the rest of the seamers come and go while Lyon is solid enough but nothing particularly special. They look very beatable right now but a year is a long time and I feel they may have bottomed out.

Rod Marsh has resigned as Head of Selectors. Three Sheffield Shield games started. All players from the test, except Starc, Hazlewood and Mennie were ordered to play. A rarity as the test players are usually rested if they want. Burns made 4 Khawaja 106. Lyon has 88/0. Handscombe a potential newcomer is 110 not out, whilst Bancroft made 2. Voges retired hurt for 16.
EDIT. Voges was hit in the head by a bouncer and left the field with concussion ruling him out of the balance of the match.

Yeah - I saw that. It looked nasty. Bad timing for him too as his place looks one of the most vulnerable.

After Day 2 of the Sheffield Shield games, this is the team I think Australia will choose for the Day-Night test in Adelaide.
Warner Khawaja Handscombe Smith Ferguson Doolan Wade Starc Mennie Hazlewood Zampa Feldman

Let's not laugh at them too much, we're hurtling towards an innings defeat in India.

We'll get slaughtered in the upcoming ashes series. Can't see anything but a 4-0 or 5-0. Obviously would be a totally different story if it was a home series.

Yes I agree - I thought they actually looked very good against India even though the Indian spinner eventually undid them. They were far more competitive than we were in that series. I really like the look of Hazlewood and Cummins, Lyons seems like he might be the best non-Indian spinner right now and they have a good depth and spirit to their batting. Quite worrying especially as I think we lack the bowling attack to really hurt them Down Under.
