Well we pretty much resurrected his career after bombing at FGR, so although he can do what he likes it would have been good of him to ensure we made some money from him?
This is the downside to shorter contracts.
And wipe off part of any signing in fee he might get? If we wanted him to feel like that we should've paid him more! Do you think we offered less than he was on at FGR? It's all worked out nicely for all involved so far, it's just how both parties recognise that and show their appreciation moving forward. Of course, that isn't always as straightforward as it may seem when agents get involved.

Seems like MT and his agent is in talks with Birmingham City. Feel sure others will be inviting him to view their Clubs as well. I do hope he stays but if he goes, he goes and good luck to him. He has proven me wrong and rammed some of my words about not being up to league football back down my throat which I am genuinely pleased about. Not sure he's up to championship level but perhaps he'll prove me wrong again. All I know is that if it was 0-0 I the 90th min of the league 1 playoff final and he had a 1 on 1 with the keeper, I wouldn't back him to score. Dissapointing if he goes buy not devastating.

It will be disappointing if he goes. But if, two years ago, someone had said your striker is going to get 50 goals over the next 2 seasons, you will get out of non-league and get another promotion to League 1 but you will have to let him go for nothing after that for nothing, what do you think? I would have said thank you very much I will accept it gladly. After all, the alternative might have been having had 2 seasons of just missing out on promotion and letting him go for nothing because he hadn't done it for us. Yes, disappointing if he goes but hey we're in League 1 next season. Really! UTG!

It's not the end of the world if he went, just a bummer it will be for free, MT wouldn't even get in my top 10 Rovers strikers

I agree with all of that. He missed a good few against D&R; even hit the post when scoring was surely easier? I don't think his finishing was good enough for League football. He has worked very hard, been helped by, probably MS, and now is good enough. Nobody, perhaps with the exception of the player himself and those mentoring him, would have recognised that. Should we have offered him a longer contract on the basis that he might improve? History tells me no.

Not wishing to sound blasé about this but players come and go all the time. No one is irreplaceable. We've been here before with Roberts, Cureton, Lambert. Not to mention Smash and Grab back a while. The only thing that never changes is that change is constant. We will now see how DC manages this as I am sure he will have seen this coming a mile off and there will be plans in place. I wish MT well wherever he goes but be honest - if anyone of us was in his strong negotiating position what would you do? There may not be too many similar opportunities for him coming along any time soon.

Agree with a lot of this. It's football, it's what happens. Should we have given longer contract? At that point in our history, Summer 2014, definately NO. We were into survival and getting promoted without going into admin. I honestly feel that if he goes nothing could have been done and we will do what we've done for last two years, we move on and we move up! For every 3/4/5 year contract given on the back of potential very few make it. The BOD and DC dud the correct thing a two year, inexpensive contract, and MT will do the right thing and move on and secure his and his family's future and very good luck to him. He would go will my. Grateful thanks for a tremendous two years. Thanks Matty! UTG!

All sounds reasonable, apart from, Matty wasn't a promising youngster, he was in his mid-twenties and his career was going nowhere, FGR even shipped him out on loan. It can't be proven, but the evidence points towards his improvement happening at the same time as him being coached by a man who himself was a top class striker and was coached at the highest level. I guess we'll know for sure when Marcus produces the next striker, and then the next one Looking at the way Billy is taking chances, we may already have our answer. Sure Matty can walk away, but it would be nice for him to give us his signature so that we can either continue the adventure together (and pay him accordingly, but without destabalising the dressing room) or get a fair fee for him moving on. Funnily enough, if he goes, I'll remember the crazy worm more than any individual goal No disagreement here. Just making the analogy that no-one really thinks about what they have learnt or that they owe loyalty to that place of learning. We have benefitted by being promoted. Two reasons for MT to stay and with a contract which is out of kilter with everyone else:- a) He is already settled here and who knows what will happen if he moves. He could well sit on the bench. b) The current players will probably be more accepting of him on that type of contract than someone coming in and it will take a hefty contract to replace him. There will be less chance of a problem in the dressing room. It makes sense all round for him to stay. He lives in Bristol aswell
