I see the friendly between The Netherlands & France was actually stopped in the 14th minute for a round of applause to remember Johann Cruyff. I already feel the plethora of minutes silences/applauses has started to take away any real meaning for them- and this takes it to a whole new level. Not every death & tragedy has to be 'remembered' at a football match, I wonder if any club will be brave enough and take the flak for not commemorating a death or tragic event.

No. Everything is under so much scrutiny these days. If you are a celeb not wearing a poppy in November there is an outcry, will be Oct soon. As you say much is demeaned by overkill.

It may be a reasonable point in general but I don't think that's a very good example of it. Cruyff being arguably the most important (and almost certainly the most influential) European footballer of all-time it seems reasonable to honour his passing in a significant way and the way they did it seems fair enough. It's not as though it was an important game or anything.
Personally, I am going to greatly miss Cruyff's gloriously grumpy appearances at multiple FIFA draws for major tournaments. Whatever the razzmatazz and guff going on in the background Johan Cryuff could be utterly relied upon to look as stoney faced as hell while he waited to draw Slovakia out of the little pot in front of him. Then he'd wander off stage to rapturous applause while maintaining the impression of a man who was being forced to go round a shopping mall by his wife on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Always endeared me massively to him.
