Perhaps it is time to lay off both the DC camp and the Wes camp...as someone largely in the middle of the crossfire ( yes I am large! ) I find merit in both approaches. I find it admirable that Wes can watch jo schmo in a ten minute highlight package of a nil nil draw between heybridge and Fred's ironworks to confirm that what he had seen in two previous extracts proved the player was worth a look at at a trial. Start seeing the same thing a dozen or so times and change that to a recommendation. I certainly could not do that no matter how much I like football ! It is dedication and will get Roy Castle (RIP) singing. We also know that stats will be a main indicator when you have not seen someone play in the flesh - three assists from midfield does not sound a lot for a midfielder ( albeit better than O'Toole managed ) but then we hear from the player himself that he was right wing back left back and left wing back during the campaign... how many runs were stopped and then someone else took the free kick that led to the goal, how many times was his cross not nodded in but scrambled across the line after two or three touches? You do not get credited with assists for those. Equally we know the flaw in these extract things - when Cheltenham were making the play offs it was easy to find a dozen clips of inspired play by Mo. They would not have shown the eight times he ran down blind alleys or the seven foul first touches in every ten that we saw in every game that would drag him back from an immediate hire to a do I take a punt or don't i? DC said in that clear the air interview that Mo was not consistent enough to warrant an offer and I can't say I disagree with him.
So DCs first signings are players he or Marcus know well - is that such a surprise? Given what DC has said I'm sure he'll settle for a little less fleeting flair for thirty consistent performances out of Sinclair and co. White has promised us that if he is in the box and the ball arrives he will score. Taylor wants the chance to prove himself in his preferred position and yes Brunt and White's injury records suggest he will get that chance. Mansell offers experience in the engine room at this level as well as above. They all deserve the remainder of this pre season and the first month or so to be fully supported - even through the keyboards. Then if the pace and consistency we were promised does not materialise, if it was better to stick with Mo, or a journeyman striker who could not score, a third defensive midfielder the same age and experience as the other two rather than Mansell etc etc then the cease fire is off! There are still players to acquire these may emerge from the triallists and at least we will have had a try before you buy deal there...but it sounds like a couple more are pursued targets maybe firmed up by the clarification of the Gow and Santos positions.
just a thought to keep the powder dry till we can see for ourselves how it is shaping up where it still matters most - on the pitch...and let's give the new arrivals all the encouragement we can to flush the bad taste of the last few campaigns out of our systems.
