Watching gaffney still running flat out at the keeper after 80 mins yesterday, it got me wondering what sort of running times they did. Anybody know what times the players do over 5k or more, or what the longest distance/timed run they do in training?

Not a clue. I did hear that on Sinclair's first ever pre season training session the squad went for a cross country run. Stuart got back first apparently finishing a mile ahead of the next person!
Completely believable mind you.

I was told on the low down that Sinclair was not only brought in as a player but also part time fitness, strength and conditioning coach. It was kept quiet as Rovers supporters would have exploded post relegation having a player-fitness coach and has thus never really seen the light of day.
This isn't in the know, just another poxy rumour.

How I wish I had half of Sinclair's engine for those interminable school cross countries.

Sinclair is/was a personal trainer by trade when he was semi-pro at Salisbury so isn't completely out of the window to take his skills if he's in that trade and wouldn't surprise me if he still did this on the side still.

'The beard' was always known for his high fitness levels, and yes he did work as a personal trainer before going full time with Rovers. If you remember Darrell Clarke's first interview with Twentyman after relegation to the Conference, he did say he thought fitness levels in the squad were not high enough, something he was keen to address in pre-season 2014/15. It looks like that was done, as we shaded a few games in that season due to superior fitness. This appears to have been carried on this season, as some of our away wins this season seem to show.

I have to say that is what really struck me about the couple of games I saw Gaffney play. It was so noticeable I'm almost suggested to say there's something physically freakish about him. It wasn't just the fact that he ran his socks off for 90 minutes - it was that he came off looking as fresh as daisy and as if he could do it all again. There are people who have absurdly high levels of natural endurance or who grow up in environments where they naturally develop it. Given that Gaffney was born in the West of Ireland, which is one of the few places in the British Isles where people still live a largely rural lifestyle, the latter may apply to him.

Absolutely! Gawd knows what Ward did in training all week or what he let the players get away with on days off, the fitness levels were appalling especially at the tail end of that relegation season. The games against Portsmouth, Rochdale & then Mansfield we were absolutely knackered after an hour & had nothing left in the tank!
