15 Dec 2012. McGhee was sacked.
His last game at York City with Mark McGhee in charge was embarassing to watch. York were tearing us apart everytime they got the ball they looked like they were going to score -they managed 4 with one in reply.
Under manager Mark McGhee Rovers struggled to find success though the autumn of 2012, crushing defeats at Gillingham, Port Vale and York City leaving the club rooted to the foot of the Football League at Christmas, before returning manager John Ward, made a number of astute signings, Mildenhall, McChrystal, O'Toole, Hitchcock and Brunt as well as giving Lockyer and Harrison their league debuts, restored the players’ self-belief.
An astonishing run then took the club within shouting distance of an unexpected play-off berth. But fell away to 14th position in the basement division.
