Presumably he came up through the ranks at Celtic before being loaned out to Hibs, so that's encouraging. Mind you that was a couple of years ago, but nevertheless he's surely worth a look at, and from the players point of view it could be an excellent way in which to put yourself in the shop window. It didn't do Michael Smith too much harm coming here.

I've watched a fair bit of the League of Ireland in the last year and it's an OK standard. Lots of young players go there to earn their stripes. Watching Shamrock Rovers in the summer they had a couple of lads up front under 23 years old who had been released from Villa and Newcastle. Both were good players and could IMO easily have played in League 2, they were however Irish and had decided to go home for at least a summer. Lots of the guys I spoke to said this happened a lot, young lads would get released and spend a summer or two at home before moving on to bigger and better things. With regards to Towell, I've heard good things and it wouldn't surprise me if Clarke has been in the ear of Macca to see if any of his contacts rate him.

He's won the PFAI Young Player of the Year in Ireland and is from what I've heard one of the best players in the league (having spoke to Shamrock Rovers & Bohes supporters). Could he make it at this level? Well Macca didn't set that league alight and he's decent at this standard....
