This was nothing short of a disaster almost from the first minute to the last. Newport fans sang "Can we play you everyweek" and i think nearly every team in the division will be looking forward to a trip to the Mem based on our home record. The only consolation is that we have a pretty brilliant away record or else DC would be in a very difficult position. Each of Newport's goals were down to rank poor defending by individuals and yet again we failed to take a number of good chances. The worse thing is that the substitutes are failing to impress enough to make you think they can do any better and based on what i have seen so far the away record is more likely to get worse than the home record get better. In truth we made Newport look a lot better than they actually were and handed them their goals on a plate as well as too often over doing things on the ball.
Nicholls 3 I didn't think it was possible to concede a worse goal than Mildenhalls blunder against Eastleigh last year but Nicholls managed to top it with an almighty blunder when he somehow managed to drop the ball behind him when it appeared to be safely in his hands leaving the Newport player the easy task of rolling the ball over the line. Thought he should have done better on the last goal as well.
Leadbitter 7 MOM A good attacking display but sometimes he does overdo the step overs and fails to get a quality cross in early enough but did cause the most problems for Newport..
Lockyer 6 For me not at his best but was hardly surprising as Tom Parkes left him isolated far too often
Parkes 1 Terrible from the moment he needlessly headed the ball into his own net to the wild shot at the end that was close to ending up at Southmead Hospital. He was also badly at fault for the third goal when hesistancy allowed the ball to bounce and this was far from the only errors he made today. Unlucky with the header that hit the bar but we can only hope that McCrystal is fit for Friday but otherwise surely James Clarke should be reinstated.
Brown 7 A good performance both defensively and attacking particularly first half where he regularly got past the full back and put decent balls in.
Mansell 4 Too many wayward passes and gave the Newport players too much room in midfield.
Sinclair 5 Unlucky not to score with a superb run in the first half but overall the partnership with Mansell was very much second best in the battle for midfield supremacy. Worked hard as always but lacked the creativity needed to open up the opposition and far too much went sideways or backwards.
Bodin 6 Goal of the season with a tremendous long range Volley that gave the Newport goalkeeper no chance at all.Had other good moments particularly in the first half but faded badly in the second half.
Gosling 6.5 Had a very good first half ,always prompting and looking for a creative pass but faded second half.
Easter 6 Showed lots of skill in holding the ball and was unlucky when he superbly controlled a through ball in the first half but was too close to the keeper who saved and Taylor failed miserably to get the rebound on target.
Taylor 5 For me a very mixed game and in truth he does miss a lot of good chances but still looks the most likely to score.
Subs
Mantano 6 Showed some good control and touches and does at least look a creative player however please can somebody tell me where he was supposed to be playing. I thought he was a winger but DC seems to send him on with instructions to play inside.
Lines 5 Some good passes and Corners but for me he starts too deep and that very much restricts his usefulness.
Harrison 4 Didn't really do anything.
DC Not convinced that he has any ideal how to improve on this poor home record as although he says it how it is as regards the performance he must take his proportion of the blame for the results. The build up is far too slow and it is his job to sort it out.
Ref 5 Missed far too much to be considered good.
Crowd 4 Decent numbers but didn't really get behind the team.
So where do we go from here? DC really has a few decisions to make now and one is whether to reinstall Mildenhall as No 1 but he is in a very difficult position having made it clear that Mildenhall is not really in his thoughts. If McCrystal is not fit for Friday then he may have to recall Clarke as Parkes is looking so sluggish that he must be replaced. Midfield is another department that is looking far from impressive as regards creativity but can he afford to play Lines in an away game where we stand to be overun without the workrate of Mansell or Sinclair.
This is almost one of the worse home starts we have had and this is so frustrating following on from impressive away performances. 1 point out of six in the last week is far from good enough.

You might call it a disaster steve, but I haven't got past the point of being severely embarrassed by the performance and the result today. Losing to the joint bottom placed team in League Two prior to kick-off is a real embarrassment for me, and hopefully for the manager and players as well. A 4-1 home defeat is a new low for us, and if it wasn't for our away form heaven alone knows where we would be now. Bottom, or close to it I would think. But I suspect that by tomorrow morning the embarrassment of today will become a disaster tomorrow. Mind you, I would have loved to have been in the home dressing room after the match finished.

cheers as always, agree with most of the ratings altho thought Taylor was better than a 5 as he was doing a lot of damage outside the box and his header was a good bullet, just slightly off target.
I think there's too much doom and gloom though. The game was a disaster, but its only one 'project' and if we bounce back on Friday then it will quickly fade from memory. They scored every chance they got (4 on target, 4 goals), and we definitely did not have the rub of the green, which on top of a poor performance added up to a hiding.
Nichols is fine, Parkes is fine, Mansell is fine, they will all react well to their poor performances and soon return to form. I think we have a manager and squad we can trust to keep us in this division, and that is what the baseline of 'success' should be this season. Everything else is an added benefit.
The other game to play, of course, is imagining what it would take to get us automatic promotion- what improvements we would need to make (and what fantasy wage money we'd have available!). I think the Newport 'project' has shown us that aerial balls to strong, determined strikers are a problem for us. Parkes and Nicholls both having a bad game was a perfect storm, but i think it was the pressure of a bullying John-Lewis and Ansah that unsettled them both. Would McChrystal's experience have told? Not sure. I think Clarke and the team were just caught cold - an uncharacteristically poor start, a series of individual errors and the confidence of a 5-match unbeaten run just drained away in the face of very determined opposition.
On another note - Blackthorn, wtf? Felt like we were beaten 20 minutes before kickoff.

Please don't under estimate the effect of new manager John Sheridan on County. He did well at Plymouth and will help County climb the table.

Hardly a disaster. We played the better football today but a few uncharacteristic defensive mistakes, the woodwork and wastefulness in front of goal turned what would have been a comfortable win into a flattering result for Newport. Parkes had his worst game for a long time and Nichols' error was out of character for a keeper who has been very solid for us since he's been here.
As long as the team doesn't let the result affect them I think we will look back on this game as a bit of a blip. Our home results this season do baffle me though and are becoming a concern.

Think we can all agree that this was a day to forget. For me the true effect of this will be known next Friday when we can gauge if the team shows the right reaction and the effects of any team changes that DC may make. If we produce a similar performance to that of today I will be very concerned. For now I will put it down to a "blip".

Brought a friend to their second Rovers game - the first was v. Eastleigh 6 months ago. Oh dear.
She loves the idea of Rovers but after two disastrous dates how many chances will Rovers get?
This was my first home game of the season - atmosphere v poor versus the away games (Luton, Mansfield etc). Friend was disappointed at lack of vocal support and wondered why people went (esp. given the high prices) and didn't get behind their team. The best I could suggest (politely) was that when you have gone to hundreds of games rather than two the excitement fades a bit, and that away games are better. This was at 1-1.
I'll be at Cambridge for the next episode. Can't wait to see what happens next....

Home form now a real issue.

First of all, agree mostly with Steve.
My additional points are a mixed bag. Of course utter disappointment, but anyone reading a 4-1 scoreline would think it was all one way traffic. It wasn't.
Sinclair bursting through, Easter hitting post, Parkes thundering the bar arguably missing an easier header may have told a different story.
So, I disagree this was a disaster on it's own merits.
What may be more near a disaster was this was 2/3 under performances bisecting a 0-0 to forget about (ironically, that was a defensive masterpiece) that even DC concedes isn't good enough and gas left him angry twice this month.
I was at Morecambe and highlighted our defensive frailties then when we papered over some fantastic approach play.
I'm sorry, as much as I like Parkes, there's no getting away his performance was one of a schoolboy not knowing where he was in the team. He made a fantastic recovery challenge on fella whom was through on goal, but that was from his initial mistake. I've not seen such a woeful individually poor defensive performance for ages.
One thing noticed, when we have the ball, very little movement. It's like we start the game with the energy of ending it.
Bodin was sponsors m o m and came in the lounge........around an hour after the match! Haha! Was it the dap or the cane from headmaster DC?!
Lethargic crowd from the off. As a friend said at work, if home performances are this poor all the time, we will inevitably lose some support.
One thing will say, credit to Newport who played the game well, gave us a lesson in finishing and at least tried to make an atmosphere of things. We didn't turn up on the pitch, and rarely did off it too. The whole day was wetter than that fella who swum the Severn channel..
Sort it, DC!

Some good valid points o2. The disaster in my mind was the number of mistakes that caused goals. It seems to me that we have to really work to score goals whereas we give goals away very cheaply. Thankfully we don't give that many away but most goals conceded are down to individual errors. I blame the Manager in selecting Parkes because IMO he looks unfit and lethargic and would have picked James Clarke in preference. Be interesting to see team selection on Friday. I really think we lack a Mr Nasty in defence and up front.

I am assuming there was some sort of method behind the madness of starting Bodin behind the front two considering the 442 had been pretty effective against Notts County in the week. Hoping to see Mildenhall back in goal on Friday night but not counting my chickens.

I'm inclined to view it as a 'blip' as they say in cliché world. DC has to do his ritualistic Mr Angry dance, but the players must know the result was really bad. It's now up to DC to make some changes, not major, and gee them up before Friday.

I think we can all agree; we cannot score goals, we do not have an instinctive goal scorer. I just wish the Matt Taylor love-in would stop, how many chances does he need to score a goal ? answer, too many. And in defence, Parkes has no confidence, currently no form, was suppose to have been working with marcus in training to improve his goal scoring ratio from corners, really !. Happy to give Nicholls a bit more time, but currently, I am not convinced. And Darrells grovelling on BBC Bristol radio, I was cringing, don't talk to me about the supporters, we will be with the club forever, need to look at yourself and work out why BRFC look like rabbits in head-lights at home. thank god I am in China, no one can see me crying. I think DC is tinkering too much with the team, particularly the back 4. Get macca back in and go for some consistent team sheets over the next few weeks.
WE are far better than this and I think it is a blip

Moaning that the team is changing to much and then moaning that this person should be dropped and that person should be dropped, DC can't win. You could see yesterday he set the team up with plenty of attacking players and they let him down. We've just come off the back off a decent draw with Notts County and 4 wins on the bounce all achieved with tinkering, the reactions when we lose game is ridiculous, i think the scoreline is irrelevant, if we lost 1-0 it would have been the same. At the moment we have a mid-table squad, playing in a non league ground, with a non league BoD and a very promising manager doing his best with a bottom 6 budget. Lets hope that in the next few months changes will be made and money injected into the squad that can take us up the league, the stale atmosphere around the place is getting overbearing now.

A freak result. You wouldn't normally get three individual errors like that in a whole season, to get them all in the same game is unbelievable.
We should have scored three or four ourselves, but once they went 4-1 up they understanbly shut up shop and the last twenty minutes were dire.

Freak result probably, but the fact of the matter the home form is relegation coming up over the hill, needs to change asap. Woulda coulda shoulda scored at home is the main problem, none of our forwards look like scoring regularly.

UTG Steady on, if you tell the truth about Taylor the happy clappers will be after you. He just is what he is, part footballer, part you-tube comedy-miss montage star. The two main issues for me yesterday wern't the fact that Parkes had a mare or that the keeper gifted them one and just stood and watched as another was tapped past him, my concerns are the total lack of application from Easter and more than that, Clarke just stood and watched as a horror show unfolded in front of him and didn't seem to have a clue what to do about it.

They scored every chance they got (4 on target, 4 goals) In fact they only had 3 shots on target and scored 4 goals.
