Football in Australia in the past has had clubs mainly with ethnic and religious backgrounds. The A league which in now ten years old is different. The lower league clubs are mainly Italian, Greek, Croatian, Serbian etc. Soccer clubs will be banned from using names, logos and emblems with ‘‘any ethnic, national, political, racial or religious connotations’’ under a new Football Federation Australia policy.

What made me post this though was the bit where it says...... A strict reading of the new rules might suggest that names with English or Scottish connotations - such as Rangers or Rovers - would be banned, but it was unclear just how strictly the rules would be applied.
So if I were to start a football club I wouldn't be allowed to call it Rovers. |

There is a rugby league team called St George Illawarra.
Personally I think it is a bit sad that this has happened, there is a lot of history and identity with some of these 'ethnic' clubs. But having said that, a lot of the festering tensions in the former homelands were brought over and taken on by the 2nd and 3rd generations here, particularly with the clubs with strong former Yugoslavian connections.

So if that was applied in the UK, bang goes London Scottish, London Irish, Bristol WI CC, Black Arabs, plus loads more no doubt.

Could you imagine the carnage in Melbourne if all the Croatian, Serbian & Greek teams would have to change their names? Still a bit rough not allowing a team called Rovers. After all Melbourne Heart have been renamed City recently. |
