19th August 2015
A message to all Gasheads
At the end of last season smoke grenades/canisters were thrown pitch side on a couple of occasions from the North Terrace (Blackthorn Terracing).
This was reported to the FA by the football officials and Bristol Rovers were made aware, in no uncertain terms, that this type of behaviour would not be tolerated.
The FA did mention that points could be deducted which would, as you can imagine, have had a devastating effect on our promotional chances.
We may have to instigate rigorous searches of all fans at all turnstiles which in turn will delay entry to the stadium in order to try and stop these thoughtless individuals.
This is your team and your club. You can help by reporting anyone you see dropping, throwing or in possession of any flare, smoke grenade/canister or pyrotechnic by reporting it to a member of the safety stewarding staff.
These pyrotechnics are extremely dangerous and can cause fatalities to the old, young and anyone with breathing difficulties.
If they come into contact with the skin they cannot be extinguished by water. The temperature, when ignited is in excess of 1000 degrees Celsius
Please be aware that anyone found bringing any type of pyrotechnic into the Memorial Stadium will be arrested and receive an automatic club banning order.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION IN THIS MATTER.
John Harper Deputy Safety Officer

Thrown at Yeovile game as well. Stewards quickly produced a bucket of water so must have expected something like that from their previous experiences (from other clubs as well)

And quite right too, but what struck me most was the reference to ''a devastating effect on our promotional chances.''
Don't get carried away now, it's far too early in the season.

I won't be wearing any. I agree they should be banned from the ground so flares should be consigned to the 70s..

Don't get carried away now, it's far too early in the season. I'm sure they were meaning promotional as in advertising ourselves.....

Don't get carried away now, it's far too early in the season. "promotional chances" are different to "our chance of promotion". The former is a commercial thing. The latter is what we Gasheads desire! Just saying like......!!

Sadly points deduction, closing stands, playing behind closed doors etc are used and punishes the many for the actions of the few. There are CCTV, stewards etc, catch the gits and ban them forever. The club knows it's a problem, put a few stewards in ordinary clothing as spotters.

I noticed the flare getting thrown on during a fans vid of the Yeovil game, gert Cretins mind. There was one let off among the fans too not far from me. I'm an asthma sufferer and it is extremely unpleasant inhaling the smoke from the flares. I'm not saying I'm a perfect human being and never do anything wrong but please, however much fun it might seem to let one off there are people stood around you who you could seriously affect their health.

What about when we play Newport, most of their fans still wear them?

A bit off topic but why's this coming from the deputy and not the safety officer himself? I take it they're related?
