Having just watched the England v France rugby game, it got me thinking about the sin bin system and whether it could replace the yellow card. Ref could decide on the length of the time according to how severe he thinks the infringement is.
Example 10 minutes for not backing off for a free kick, 20 minutes for a serious, dangerous, tackle etc, you get the idea. Could it work in football.? The ref would still have a red card for sending off if he thought it was warranted .Sin bin could be managed by the 4th official.
Do you think it would work?

Comes up every now and again. I think the general arguments against are normally along the following lines;
1 - That if referees had the option of putting people in a sin bin they'd probably be a lot more conservative about handing out red cards for offences that deserved it (as tends to happen in Rugby).
2 - That if you had sin bins replacing yellow cards it would break up the flow of the game horribly because the team that was reduced to 10 would simply shut the game down for the duration of that period leading to an incredibly bitty game. In general games in which 1 team has a man advantage over another tend to be pretty terrible to watch. This is the strongest case against for me - I think about the number of games I've seen ruined by an early red card (right or wrongly awarded) and I don't think I'd like to see any more of that than is necessary.
3. - Even though there are more players in the game losing a man is a much bigger deal in Rugby than it is in football because of the 1-1 nature of the contest. Not sure losing a man for 10 minutes would be that much a deterent against certain types of foul - I imagine players/managers would judge it well worth it. In addition you would have players adjusting their tactics in order to get opponents sent to the sin bin - as definitely happens in Rugby.
4. - I always think this debate is framed by the outdated (and wrongheaded) Corinthian spirit based assumption that removing foul play from the game would somehow make it better. This ignores the fact that foul play is part of any sport. That's not to say certain types of fouling shouldn't be kept to a minimum but the idea that if you drastically reduced the level of foulplay you'd have a much better spectacle I'm not really convinced by.
However, there's no reason these things shouldn't be tried somewhere (in fact I think this has been tried before in the odd competition here and there). People can act like the rules of football are sacred and unchanging whereas actually the game has been tinkered constantly since the start. From crossbars being added, to the concept of the penalty box to the constant amendments with the offside rules, to the introduction of cards and the pass back rule (a brilliant addition that undoubtedly played a major part in transforming the game by keeping the ball in play for so much longer). But the failure of the 10 yards for backchat rule suggests football is probably better at looking at its own solutions rather than importing things from Rugby which is really a very different game with a different rhythm. I don't think the sin bin would be the Rugby equivalent of a football yellow card - it's a much harsher penalty than that. Football has never really been able to come up with a sanction that sits in between the yellow and red card.

Rugby is for piss drinking animals, to take anything from that game would be totally abhorrent.
