Barcelona striker Luis Suarez's appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) against a four-month ban for biting will be heard on 8 August. The Uruguay forward was punished after biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil. An initial appeal against the 27-year-old's suspension was rejected by Fifa. The appeal has been filed by Suarez, Uruguay and Barcelona, the Spanish club he joined last month in a £75m transfer from Liverpool. Cas has agreed to fast-track the case, and it is thought a verdict could be announced by the end of the week after the hearing. Barcelona's first match of the new La Liga season is on 24 August, but if the ban is upheld, Suarez will be out until late October. Under the terms of the suspension, he is banned from "any football-related activity", which means he cannot train with his club or enter the confines of any stadium, although players' union Fifpro argues the details "lack clarity". Suarez is also banned from playing for the national team for nine matches and was fined 100,000 Swiss francs (£66,000). www.gbnews.com/media-library/liam-gallagher.jpg?id=53657169&width=1200&height=800&quality=90&coordinates=0%2C0%2C0%2C184

Ban's been upheld but he's allowed to train with the squad. I'm glad CAS allowed FIFA to have some standards.

An emotional Luis Suarez announces Uruguay retirement..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/03/06/89213343-13806973-image-a-1_1725341052912.jpgUruguay striker Luis Suarez has announced his retirement from international football. The 37-year-old fought back tears as he confirmed Uruguay's World Cup qualifier against Paraguay on Saturday (00:30 BST) will be his last appearance for his country. The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward is Uruguay's all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 142 appearances, having made his debut for Uruguay against Colombia in February 2007. "I’ve been thinking about this and analysing this. I believe this is the right time," said Suarez. "I want to be relaxed when I play my last game with the national team. I'll be just as excited to play as I was in 2007 when I played for my national team for the first time. "That 19-year old kid is now a veteran player, an older player - however you want to call it - with an incredible history with the national team, that will give his life for the team." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/03/06/89213467-13806973-image-a-8_1725341441231.jpgSuarez played in nine major international tournaments for Uruguay. He was sent off in the 2010 World Cup quarter-final when he handled on the line during the final minute of extra time to prevent Ghana from progressing to the semi-finals. Ex-Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan missed the subsequent spot-kick and Uruguay won the resulting penalty shootout to reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 40 years. In 2011, Suarez led Uruguay to victory in the Copa America in Argentina, finishing as the tournament's second top scorer with four goals. At the 2014 World Cup, he scored twice to help Uruguay beat England in the group stages but missed the knockout stages after receiving a fourth-month ban for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in his side's final group game. Suarez was also handed a nine-game international ban and missed the 2015 Copa America. "We did go through difficult moments. There were many," Suarez said during his retirement press conference. "Personally, it was worse for me after my massive mistake in 2014. But there's nothing that I would reproach." Suarez would go on to play at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, while he appeared in five editions of the Copa America. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/03/06/89213341-13806973-image-a-3_1725341102745.jpg

Luis Suarez bids a tearful farewell to international football - Uruguay's all-time record goalscorer bows out after winning his 143rd cap..

Luis Suarez's 17-year Uruguay career came to a close as they were held to a goalless draw against Paraguay in a South American World Cup qualifier. Suarez, 37, announced on Monday that he is retiring from international duty. He ends as Uruguay's all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 143 appearances since his debut against Colombia in February 2007. Suarez and his family gathered on the pitch before kick-off for a pre-game ceremony, including tributes from fans and a video message from Argentina legend and Inter Miami team-mate Lionel Messi. "Uruguay is bigger than any player. Starting tomorrow I will be another fan," he told the crowd. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/07/07/89384837-13823873-image-a-10_1725691627949.jpgUruguay had 65% possession but struggled to break down a dogged Paraguay defence in a scrappy encounter that included 24 fouls and six yellow cards - including one for Suarez. The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward had the best chance for the home side but his first-half effort hit the post. Newcastle's Miguel Almiron had Paraguay's best effort but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Sergio Rochet. Uruguay were without five players through suspension, including Liverpool's Darwin Nunez and Tottenham's Rodrigo Bentancur, after they clashed with fans during a Copa America defeat by Colombia in July. The draw keeps Uruguay second in the qualifying table, four points behind Argentina. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/07/07/89384557-13823873-image-a-8_1725690808457.jpgDarwin Nunez has played alongside Suarez in the national side since making his Uruguay debut in 2019. The Liverpool forward called Suarez his 'idol' in a heartfelt Instagram post on Wednesday. 'Thank you from the heart for everything you did for me in the national team, you were my idol without knowing you and you are even more so now that I know you. 'As you said, you came as a child and leave as a legend, it's everyone's dream and you fulfilled it.'
