So the cricket season starts today. In my opinion he championship is a really underrated competition despite the contempt the authorities treat it with. I'm at Worcester complete with wooly hat and gloves watching Worcester v Yorkshire. Absolutely amazed Worcester decided to bat first but after a ropey start they've recovered well. Fell has ridden his luck and has edged a few through third man but has looked increasingly composed and Moeen is one of my favourite batsmen to watch. You wouldn't bet your mortgage on him scoring runs but he makes batting look effortless.
Jack Brooks has been the stand out bowler. He looks a yard quicker than the rest and he has a knack of making things happen. Brennan's radar has been a bit off but Yorkshire clearly have a good attack with exceptional strength in depth.
Despite the howling wind, there's a good crowd here today, certainly not one man and his dog stuff. New Road is one of my favourite places to watch first class cricket.
Tips for the season: Warwickshire to capitalise on Yorkshires England absentees, Kent to win division two and Hampshire to win one of the one day cups.
My team are Gloucester and their main chance of success is in the championship I think. If they can keep some bowlers fit they could finish in the top 4 but more likely is that we'll lose players to injury again. Leicester are in a sorry state though so we should avoid the wooden spoon.

Oh that was a decent day to watch cricket at Worcester then. Ali and Fell from what I remember and it was a balanced days cricket. Unfortunately Yorks came back with a vengence after that and show why they are going to take some beating again this year. Provided those core seamers stay fit it's hard to see where they have holes. Even with star player out they still look stacked with talent. They produce so many high quality youngsters.
I saw my first cricket of the year at Taunton this Monday. I'm worried about Somerset this year and Monday didn't really dissuade those doubts. They've lost key players and not really replaced the holes they had last year. Compton and Kieswetter are massive losses from the batting lineup and the bowling looks a bit raw. Gregory took 5 and Overton bowled some top draw deliveries but they were way too loose and conceded runs far too easily at all stages in that innings. I saw most of Borthwick's 90 odd and all of Collingwood's Century and to be honest they didn't have to work hard for the runs at any stage. It was cruise control. Unless you can throttle a side you can't really build pressure. Rahman had an off day (on what was probably not a very helpful pitch) but it's a concern. Only Allenby looked like he could consistently keep the score down. It's early days for Groeneweld but he didn't look that threatening and you worry that he's spent a long time on green tops at a lower standard. Not sure he'll be the penetrating bowler that Somerset have missed since Kirby was crocked. Then you have Thomas to come back but he's another year older etc. Batting looks a bit on the inexperienced side after Trescothick (also a year older) and Hildreth. Durham gave Somerset an A1 lesson in the advantages of having genuinely penetrating bowlers. Rushworth is a superb county seamer and Onions was also very good. Somerset just don't have those players and I'm not sure their batting is as strong this year either. I can see them struggling this year. Pleasure to watch Collingwood score 100 - one of my favourite players to watch. So unfussy; short backlift, minimum movement, easy accumulator, fighter and near perfect shot selection. Has made the absolute best of somewhat limited talent. Losing 5 wickets to his bowling in the first innings was criminal though on Somerset's part and another poor sign. Having said all that could have been a different game if Barrow hadn't dropped a sitter off Collingwood when he was in the 40s.
Currently listening to Gloucester possibly about to make an unlikely dash at a 4th day target set by Northants. Don't think they'll do it but they're definitely in the game here especially with the bulk of their attacking batsmen still to come and Northants seemingly offering little in the way of threat. I love the Championship - it gets abad press from people who don't actually ever go or really make an effort to understand it. Go to New Road or Taunton and it does not look like the 'one man and his dog' image that is the lazy stereotype. It has terrible PR though - nobody writes about what great value it is in itself. It only ever gets talked about in relation in the England team. I know quite a few people who don't give a crap about the overhyped England cricket team but go to 70-80 days of county cricket a year. It's a great competition.
I like your Warwickshire tip but I think Notts look like the team that might stop Yorkshire. Worcs will struggle to stay up as usual but should be competitive at least. I think the other relegation place may be between Middlesex (who look a bit of a mess to me) and Somerset. Lancs will probably come straight back up from Div 2 - it would be nice to see someone different come up. Too much to hope it would Glos I think but Glamorgan may be a reasonable outside bet; they have a reasonable looking squad on paper but need to start putting performances together.

Yes I was bloody cold by 6pm but it was a good competitive day. Haven't seen Fell bat before but he looked pretty compact once he got through the first hour and is very strong through the on side. Bit suspect outside his off stump but then who isn't!
Somerset have some good young players and I guess they are trying to bring them through. Whether that is due to financial constraints or because the coaches genuinely believe in their ability I don't know. Not the start they would have wanted against Durham but I guess given the young players they have there must be an acceptance that they will have off days. The hope must be that they have enough days where it clicks for their young squad to keep them up.
Middlesex have a decent bowling attack on paper. I think Rowland Jones is a nice bowler if he can stay fit and Tim Murtagh holds it all together and I thought Ravi Patel looked a decent prospect last season too but I wouldn't bank on their lower middle order scoring them enough runs. You are right, something just seems off there at the moment.
Sussex have quietly gone about building a good seem bowling attack. I think Shazhad still has something to offer and Mills is a good capture too. They got the best out of Jordan after Surrey released him and I wouldn't bet against them doing the same with those two.
I'm in denial regarding Notts. They have a good team but they're not one of my favourite counties. Can't remember the last player they produced who played for England on a regular basis. Too much over reliance on flashing the cash and seeking quick fixes.
I thought Glos were going to have a dart too but they have definitely settled for a draw. Still good to see Dent get off to a good start in what I think is a make or break season for him. He was rubbish in the championship last year but always looks like he's got time when he's batting. Hopefully he can start to fulfill his potential this season. Not surprised to see Miles starting the season well too.

Hopefully he can start to fulfill his potential this season. Not surprised to see Miles starting the season well too. Yes - I can understand why they didn't go for it. I think 454 was probably a bit too much. Apparently they dropped a ton of catches yesterday afternoon so it's a case of what might have been I think. Miles looks like he could be the standout of a set of promising but raw seamers. Really important that Dent has a big season for Glos I think if they have any chance of doing anything this year so that is an excellent start on that score. Still don't understand why Glos never seem to have a spinner to speak of in their squad but ho-hum I've been saying that for 10 years now. I think this is a reasonable start though - no doubt previous years Glos would have been odds on to fold when faced with this situation particularly as they knew they'd let things slip from a potentially good position. Suggests there may be some fight there. You see I was a member at Notts for a few years and have a soft spot for them but, yes, they are a kind of poor man's Surrey. The problem they have in developing young player is that it's something of desert round there in terms of participation for some reason. That's why they pinch players off Leicester and Derby. Most of their actual youngsters tend to be second rate Yorkshire cast offs. Slightly strange situation. I like them because as usual their lower middle order looks like the best in the country and that wins so many games over the course of the season. Sussex have become the reclamation county. Worked with several players but failed with Monty. Tyrone Mills just needs to jump start his career somewhere so is a good signing - Shahzad is a very tricky character who could have an argument in an empty room. It's not ability you have to manage there, it's whether you can put up with him for long enough! Because they have produced a number of genuinely high quality players I think Somerset can sometimes overrate their own young players a bit and be a bit too optimistic about who can step up. I could be wrong there but where I'm pretty certain is that they don't have much balance to their lineup and they need a genuine strike bowler. I don't really see one in their squad. I'd bet on Rehman winning them enough games to stay up though.
