RIP to the doyen of cricket broadcasting both here in Australia and the UK.
He didn't look well a few months ago when he appeared at the Channel 9 launch of the Aussie cricket summer. Only Bill Lawry is left from the commentary old guard here and he is becoming increasingly frail.
My abiding image of him is way back 20 years ago when a day's play was washed out (must have been at Headingly) and his crisp crème suit in the studio contrasted with the dark grey clouds outside!

I was really sad to hear this news, because to me Richie Benaud epitomised how cricket should be played and how cricketers should conduct themselves . . . both on and off the pitch.
It seems to me that he had been talking cricket (and a lot of common sense too) for a lot of my life, and I really looked forward to his stints behind the microphone, both on radio and TV. Since his retirement from observing the English game a few years ago, Test match cricket has somehow never been the same for me. I think that the secret of his success was in the fact that he didn't feel the need to talk constantly, but when he did speak he always had something interesting to say. And his written word was just as interesting too.
RIP Richie Benaud.

Along with John Arlott, Brian Johnston & Peter West..Richie Benaud were the greatest commentators imo of my early days in the 70's & 80's.
A great quote from his mum: On 29 October 2008, Benaud's mother Irene died, aged 104. He said of his mother, "She improved my love of vegetables by introducing the phrase, 'You can't go out and play cricket until you have eaten all your vegetables.'
R.I.P Richie..a great man..!!

Yes very funny quotes, the McGrath one could have been aimed at Courtney Walsh too.

Voice of cricket for several generations. Interesting man - resisted the classic temptation of ex-cricketers to bemoan the passing of the 'good old days'. Was a very forward thinking voice for the game.
He was a brilliant commentator largely because he had a sense of perspective, genuine wit and knew when to keep quiet. The complete opposite of the inane soulless 'banter' that makes up so much of TV commentary today.
Shouldn't be forgotten as a player either. Kept the flame of legspin burning (as player, coach and constant advocate) when it looked like it might be permanently extinguished from the game. Was a superb Captain who had a great record despite not having a particularly fantastic Aussie side compared with others and played a part in keeping the game popular in Australia post Bradman.
