Well that was more like it and the performance of the team made the day that much better. Nice big club house which was packed full of Gas but only criticism would be no TV therefore no Dartford v Barnet but as that game went probably just as well. The only thought as we left the Clubhouse for the terrace was whether that result would put too much pressure on the lads as it would have really have lifted the team had they known that a win would put us top but as it was four points at this stage of the season would pretty well be Title over. I felt it did affect the team and made them a bit nervous first half knowing that a mistake could make such a huge difference to the season.Fair dos to Barnet having set us the task to stay with them and Grimsby too although not so much them because the task to finish above them is at least in our own hands. To be honest I felt four games ago when looking at the fixtures that if we could stay within two points of Barnet coming out of Kidderminster then we had a chance of the title. Lets be fair Barnet could not have had an easier four games than the ones they had but the good point is that they have hardly impressed during that run.
Kidderminster did their bit to make it tough in that first half with their forwards looking quite dangerous and we were probably lucky that Lee Hughes looks well past his sell by date but in truth we still had the upper hand and should have gone in half time one or two ahead. Shame that Adam Dawson's finishing does not match his approach play. Lines and Mansell wrestled for the midfield dominance and Blissett impressed with his ability to hold the ball up and win most of his aerial battles- a superb decision by DC to play the big man and Ellis too was looking a handfull. The Kidderminster keeper kept them in the game with good handling and two good saves one from a Blissett header which looked a goal mall the way and the other blocking Monkeys shot although I feel he should have buried it. Dawson missed the easiest chance when clean through and seemed to get himself in two minds either a chip over the keeper or a cross and ended up making a right mess of the chip when he could have shot cleanly or even taken the ball on and past the keeper. He does remind me of Dave Martin when it comes to scoring!!
That was probably the first half summed up as we battled well to get on top and Lines and Mansell stuck to their tasks well and one class run from deep from Lines stood out.
The second half was thankfully a very one sided affair where our midfield dominated completely and ran the show, whether this was down to Kidderminster tiring due to the one days less rest I am not sure but it really could have been 5 or 6 come the final whistle. For the first time this season it really looked like we could have found a striking partnership as Blissett and Harrison looked a real handful for their central defenders dragging them left and then right and forcing them into a lot of shirt pulling. The referee for me not too bad when it comes to the general atrocious standard of officials in this League but how he didn't give a penalty when Harrison was pulled down when clean through amazes me but to be fair he was not helped by the non involvement of the linesman in helping him with the decision. It was also a clear sending off offence.
It didn't matter though (other than an extra goal knocked off Grimsby's GD) because Ellis's header diving in front of the keeper to Line's superb delivery gave us a well deserved lead and his second, a real strikers goal set up by the poor defensive header back to the keeper which Ellis beat the keeper too and sent a little lob over the desperate keepers hands. We were now at our best and Kidderminster looked dead and gone and it was just a case of how many we would score as Puddy was a mere spectator. It turned out it was just one,a brilliant header from substitute Taylor (who was unlucky to be rested) and he was also unlucky not to have a second in his short cameo appearance. Well that was it other than the celebrations at the final whistle for a job well done by players,Management and us supporters. What a great day out!! Let's hope Dover is another!!!
So onto the individual performances and I will say straight away that after a team performance like that under such pressure by the importance of staying in touch with Barnet nobody could be given less than a six.
Puddy 6 Had hardly anything to do but his handling throughout was impeccable and minus a couple of kicks into touch his distribution was good. I really think now that he is well worth his number one position .
Lockyer 6 Not really surprised that Leadbitter was dropped to find a place for one of DC's favourites but he defended well but his use of the ball and general running pace is not up to the standard of Leadbitters and IMO that restricted Dawson at times because he didn't receive the ball quick enough particularly in the second half.
Parkes 7.5 Good all round display and defended well throughout although Kidderminsters strikers were awkward customers rather than good.
McCrystal 7 Same as Parkes but with him you get "what's written on the tin". Never going to pass the ball well but sticks to his task and rarely loses the ball in the air and is Mr Reliable.
Brown 7 Defended very well in that his winger hardly got past him at all but didn't get involved in attacking as much as usual but I always rate a defender on how they defend which IMO is their primary job and Brown did that well and did also0 improve his offensive work in the second half.
Dawson 6.5 Started off very well and ran at the Kidderminster defence at every opportunity. I would always play him because he is an outlet if we are under a bit of pressure and capable of taking the attention of two players because of his pace.
Mansell 7.5 A no nonsense all action display back to his very best now the pressure of being on the 9 bookings is removed. His play enables Lines to do what he does best which is to run with the ball. If Sinclair does manage to get fit before the season is over it is difficult to see where he will be fitted in the team.
Lines 7.5 A great all round display ,worked very hard and won more than his normal amount and there were a few of his trademark runs at the opposition. His delivery of free kicks and corners gives us an added "string to our bow" and the cross for both Ellis's goal and Matty Taylor's goal were sublime.
Monkhouse 6.5 Still feel he is best playing more inside as he is not a winger and can be quite creative as well as providing his fair share of goals. Should probably have added to his tally with one chyance either half.
Blissett 7.5 Bullied their centre half to submission. Strong in the air and on the ground. For a big man he shows a fair turn of pace and it was a shame that he did not get a deserved goal. His first header deserved a goal and was brilliantly kept out by the home keeper and his second should have been buried. Is the ideal partner for Harrison and the problem DC has when Easter is fit is where hecan fit him and Taylor in the team. Personally I would play Blissett every time and then choose from the other three for his partner.
Harrison 8 Two goals and unlucky not to win a penalty. Was a continual threat to goal and on this form it is going to take a brave decision not to start him but there again Clarke has proved himself willing to make Brave decisions. Those who say Ellis can't start a game are talking nonsense and the only way he can prove the doubters wrong is by starting which he hasn't had many opportunities to do in the past.Must be said that DC can take a pat on the back for the way he has managed the kid.
Taylor Not on long enough to really mark but during the time he was on he showed good holding up of the ball, scored a fine header and was close with another turn and shot. Personally though i would again start him on the bench next game.
Clarke Not long enough to mark.
DC 9 Made brave decisions that proved to be the right ones.
Kidderminster 5 Could have been a six goal hammering and can't really see them taking anything off Barnet unless the extra days rest did make a big difference.
Support 10 Fantastic day
The question now is can we win all three remaining games? Dover is without doubt the toughest game left for the top three and that could be the game where the title is won or lost but with a similar level support as yesterday we could make it a home game and secure the 3 points. Of course if Barnet win their three games it won't matter and if they do that they will be deserved champions.
