Hi Gasheads
This is my first post so here goes. I see Hughes is at Fleetwood these days but don't know if he is consistently playing for them or if he is injured. Worth a punt or not? Probably wouldn't want to drop divisions to play for us again anyway. I thought he was a decent player when he was with us.

I wouldn't have him back but I'm not sure Monkhouse is any better effort wise?

Maybe we should have a look at Derek Asshole a Mower instead then or is he too old now?

never go back, as they say.
on his day a devastatingly attacking player with a great eye for goal, but also a complete liability in defence / positionally.
presumably high wages, and we don't (usually)take players falling down the divisions.

Another of the crazy era signings who was overpaid, not his fault I know and over rated. A very poor player who tried too many fancy `touches` which rarely came off but made certain members of the crowd acclaim the player he wasn't when they did. He good take a good penalty tho I will give him that!!

Didn't he say when he signed for rovers " I'm here cause they are good payers" Ouch! Fair shout to him. I am not 100% certain but I think a rented house was part of the deal as well. Those were Very bad days indeed and we are just starting to recover now.

I liked Jeff Hughes. Skillful player; contributed a fair few goals for a wide midfielder.
Not so sure he's what we need right now though, and not sure he'd fit in with the current team.

It was a bit tactless to say the least, and quite unnecessary. It didn't give him the best of starts with some of our supporters, as I remember.

It was a naive joke that has been held against him ever since.

file alongside craig stanley CRAP Oh, come on.
Hughes - 346 appearances, 61 goals, almost all at League 1 or better.
Stanley - 417 apperances, 28 goals, split between League 2 and the Conference.
The two are not comparable.

It was a naive joke that has been held against him ever since. Thanks for that, I've never heard (or read) that it was intended to be a joke. But in accepting that it was, then I would have to agree that it was naive in the extreme. It's hardly the best way to introduce yourself to your new club and their supporters.

If the comment about "good payers" was a joke, Hughes has gone up in my estimation, for having the wit to avoid the usual cliches. Bit risky though! Hughes 2008–2011 Bristol Rovers 129 (28) Stanley 2011–2012 Bristol Rovers 34 (1) Admittedly, it's not all about goals. But the career stats and Rovers stats would indicate that Hughes has the more impressive record. From memory, the goal he got at the Blackthorn End against Leeds, volleying in a cross from David Pipe, was a highlight. But, on the other hand, I can't erase the memory of Hughes standing aside when he could have made an attempt to stop one of the six goals Sheffield Wednesday scored against us at Hillsborough. Stanley wouldn't have been afraid to try to close a player down. I don't think Darrell Clarke would pursue either player for the current squad!

Ah, Jeff Hughes. The cause of all our problems according to some.
The same people who forgave other players for their misdemeanours because they spoke with a local accent and watched the club as boys.
Did someone say on here that local lads get treated more harshly than other players? Utter pish and Hughes proves it.
Should we take him now? No idea, dunno what league we'll be in and dunno if he's any good these days. We certainly shouldn't sign him just because he played for ua before, as roughly 70% of all forummers across all teams recommend.
Please continue the bitchfest now...

I'm a bit surprised about some of negative comments about Hughes. There have been far worse players on our books in the past. Michele di Piedi anyone!
