watched tonight and thought that the Arse were superb, and just one different bounce away from going through. A great watch
but it looked to me like all those years of rock'n'roll have taken their toll on Bono Vox. I watched the BBC programme on Irish Rock tonite, though, and thought that I Will Follow has weathered very well - it still packs its punch, still got its Edge

Yes, but they only had to do it because they put themselves in an unnecessary hole in the first place. You can only buy the gallant losers line so often - that somewhat annoying media line is nicely balanced by Arsene Wenger being supremely ungallant and demonstrating once again that he is one of football's all time hilarious sore losers. I really like that about him though; no false bollocks from Arsene - you know you are just going to get stream of teenagery grumpiness whenever he loses in these situations. Much better than the cliche'd 'we must respect the opposition', 'we'll work harder next year' etc. No I want a full scale managerial paddy about the unfairness of life! Wenger is never afraid to unleash his inner Kevin.
Seems odd that Man City are England's last Champions League representatives left staggering. I know it's largely a quirk of the fixture list but still. Arsenal's performances the last few years reminded me of 2 UEFA Cup runs Liverpool had in the mid 90s where they went out to Auxerre and PSG in back to back having launched desperately exciting last 15 minute comebacks at Anfield. It made for brilliant football but each time you were left going, really did you have to make it this difficult?

Indeed Arsenal threw it away in the first leg after Ox scored. No pragmatism or leadership from Wenger or his 'leaders on the pitch. Frankly it was school boy and p*ss poor for a bloke who has years of European competition experience

I'd just add that I completely agree with Wenger's call to scrap the Away goals. He's absolutely right - it is outdated and creates perverse incentives now for home teams not to attack which has lead to the growth of a very tedious form of football in which both teams emphasise counter attacking.

What do you replace it with, if anything?
Arsenals game would have gone to extra time. Would Arsene Whinger start moaning that Monaco had an extra half hour on their home pitch and it was unfair? Straight to penalties?

I wouldn't replace it with anything - just straight up 2 legged football. If it goes to extra time it's luck of the draw. The Away goals rules produces very strange football where the home team often plays scared.

I'm in favour of going straight to penalties instead of another half hour, more often than not teams play very negatively in that half hour and the result is still the same after the extra half an hour anyway.
