After the Lord Mayors Show is the only way to describe the General Performance today. After the great win at Grimsby last week I was pretty certain that today was never going to be a stroll in the park because the truth about our team this season is we are just as likely to beat the top teams as we are the bottom teams as we just can't seem to score enough goals no matter how much possession we have. Defensively today we were very, very good however the same cannot be said for the play in the other two thirds of the pitch where the standard of passing and control of the ball were for long spells, very poor.
If we are to win this League we will need to be a lot better than today. Far too many players were below par and whether the pressure is starting to show a bit I am not sure but the truth is that every game now is about one thing...the three points. It doesn't matter how we get them as long as we do.
Mildenhall 6 Actually apart from his wayward kicking he did what little he had to do well
and his handling was probably the best it has been this season.
Leadbitter 7 He has really come into form the last few games and it is going to present Clarke with a very difficult decision when our injured players return. It will be very harsh to drop him as he has a good understanding with Dawson and is far better going forward than Lockyer and his defensive improvement is there for all to see. Is looking like the player we were told we had signed from Hereford and covered so much ground.
McChrystal 7 A reasonable game but almost gave a goal away with a real stupid push which gave a free kick away in a very dangerous position. Won a lot of the aerial balls
Parkes 10 MOM Can't think of one thing to criticise Tom for this afternoon. Composed on the ball, won everything on the ground and powerful in the air and as a bonus scored the winning goal. Absolutely excellent.
Brown 7 A good all round game. Defensively very strong and showed great energy and a willingness to get forward although I would say his attacking game was not as good as as I know he can be.
Dawson 7 A bit of a mixed performance. Started off looking as if he would roast the full back all afternoon with some amazing footwork and made several runs deep into the opponents penalty area. Should have done better with both a chance in the first half and several crosses that went astray and his game deteriorated as the game went on and he seemed to be trying too hard and over doing the trickery. On saying that he is definitely an exciting player.
Mansell 6 Did a lot of work and put 100% in but for me this was a below par performance and too many wayward and overhit passes however he keeps winning the ball and is always trying to bring width to p the game but for me he still needs to have a player alongside him who he can pass the ball too and allow them to take the ball forward.
Lockyer 6 Tom is a steady defensive midfielder who tackles well and keeps the midfield tight. he is now passing the ball to our players regularly but the trouble is there is nothing dynamic about his play when it comes to creativity and this is more noticeable at home games where both he and Mansell perform well defensively but neither looks like creating anything because their short passing doesnt really get us forward and their long passing is often overhit.
Monkhouse 7 I think he is one of the few players who can be relied on to make a creative pass and also to keep his head when in possession. If we are going to take Blissett off then I would like to see him pushed forward as a targetman because he is very good both in the air and on the ground and can bring other players into the game.
Taylor 5 Touch seemed to desert him today and there was the customary terrible miss when clean through. Maybe he was carrying an injury from a couple of nasty challenges and that affected his general play but this was his most ineffective game in a long time.
Blissett 4.5 A poor performance from the big man apart from a few runs to the wings where he held the ball up well and a couple of lay offs. Seemed too often to misjudge the height of the ball and also allowed the ball to be taken off him with poor control. However it has to be said that the service to him was generally careless and he really needs to receive some crosses that he can attack and it would have helped if Taylor had made more effort to be near to him.
Sub: Harrison 6 Typical Ellis performance. Tries hard but is not a leader of the attack. Jumps well but most of his headers goes astray. For me his performance was summed up when Balanta cleverly flicked the ball through to him and he tried to do the same thing rather than the straightforward control and run.
Can't really mark Gosling or Balanta but would say that one has the ability and the other hasn't. Thought Balanta showed more creativity in the short time he was on than the rest showed all afternoon. Surely he has to start a game soon rather than short cameo appearances. I really worry that we are going to lose this talent because he is a "footballer" rather than a "run everywhere and produce little creatively" which at times I would say represents a DC ideal player. Some will say this is harsh but this team as a unit is the most hardworking we have had for many a year but lacks anything "Special" in the middle of the pitch.
Gosling for me does not have enough go in him to run at players and slows the game down to snails pace.
DC 5 Another questionable home performance with not enough players of composure in the side but to be fair we have got the right result which was the most important thing today. When available I think DC has to find room in the team for Easter, Balanta and Sinclair because they are players who have the composure and i think will all be on each others wavelength.

One word- terrible.
we are the home side and do need to open up these sides we are playing more. I appreciate that we can rely on every player to give 100% and run till they drop BUT there are times when you need to have players who can change the game with Skill particularly at home and when Balanta was on the pitch we finally looked likely to do that.
Altrincham 6 Worked hard. Were much better than the side that beat us earlier in the season but other than the rightly disallowed goal did not really trouble Mildenhall all game.
So to conclude a deserved three points based on the fact that we looked the only side that were going to score all afternoon and should have been 2 or 3 goals up by half time. For Tuesday i would find room for Balanta in the team from the start because we are the home side and do need to open up these sides we are playing more.
