Ongar Town 3 Unitey 1 (Essex Alliance Premier League East, tier 12). Still things to play for - a win would see Ongar promoted to the senior division. Slightly weird -2 teams out of the 10 in the league get promoted. Game was switched from Fyfield (just north of Ongar) to Mark Hall in Harlow which is about a 20 minute drive away from Ongar. Mark Hall is Sports Centre by a school with 3G pitch in a cage. People watched from a small enclosed area in the 1st half. Ongar in all navy blue, Unitey in light blue tops and navy shorts. Ongar were a bit more up for it. Also some of their language left a lot to be desired. Ongar peppered the Unitey goal from early on and only poor finishing kept the scores level. After around 30mins they finally broke through, a half decent save from the Unitey keeper - pushed the ball out and the rebound was hit home. More Ongar pressure. A decent move down the Ongar right flank saw a ball into the box, the No.11 took it with his back to goal, spun round, and smacked it to the keepers top left - excellent finish. A rare Unitey attack near HT saw them miss a 1 on 1 and you thought that was going to be there only chance to get back into it. HT, no bar. Vending machines at Mark Hall Sports Centre didn't inspire. The crowd were then informed that watching from the small terrace at the side of the pitch was 'dangerous'. Like every single match played at every level in the world is potentially 'dangerous'. Very odd. But we were in Harlow. So 2nd half the couple of dozen in attendance trooped out the cage and watched from the other side, a small bank looking into the cage. Like being at the zoo. Ongar sat back and seemed comfortable with the 2-0 scoreline. Unitey pushed forward. A Unitey free kick from just outside the box evaded everyone and the ball nestled to the keepers bottom left. 1-2. Another goal and Ongar don't get promoted. About 80mins in Unitey were trying to play it out from the back (in tier 12! Guys!) and a high press saw the keeper struggling to clear his lines, he kicked the ball into an Ongar forwards outstretched foot, and the ball rebounded into the Unitey net. 3-1, game over. There was some niggly stuff going on and the Ongar captain (had a bit of a mouth on him) was booked and by general consensus sin-binned for the remainder of the game. Can't argue with the entertainment on offer. Officials did well in a bit of a niggly game. Back in Epping in time to watch the 2nd half of the manure vs 115 charges game. Entry: Free. No programmes, no bar. Attendance: With people sort of drifting in and out of the Sports Centre - a tough call. 25 seemed to be the general agreed number. Quite a few groundhoppers who seemed to know each other. Maybe one more game next week...

May & Baker EC A vs Wakering Sports (Essex Olympian Division 1, tier 12). Rather disappointing to get to the game (40 minute drive across north east London) to be told it had been called off late notice. I was told Wakering couldn't raise a team. Which was odd as a win would pretty much guarantee them promotion. Transpires it was May & Baker who couldn't fulfill the fixture. Was then sent a screenshot proclaiming Wakering as EOFL Div 1 winners (despite the fact that the team above them still has a game to play). The table makes no sense. On the way home I realised I could still pick up a game at Fairlop Oak Playing Fields (well the 2nd half anyway). Fairlop Rovers vs Philip Utd. Premiership Cup Play-off game in tier 12. There was a lot of football going on at Fairlop Oak Playing Fields. None of it involving an 11 vs 11 mens game. It started raining. I gave up and went home. My conclusion is that below tier 11 things are a bit of a mess. It all felt a very long way away from watching Union Berlin in the European Champions League at the Olympiastadion.

Season conclusion. Congratulations to Mrs V Smegma who chalked up 51 games, comfortably beating my total of 40 games. Though in mitigation I did chalk up more miles with trips to Berlin, Paris, Nuremberg and Karlsruhe! Total cost (entry) £424.50 which works out at £10.61 a game. The Champions League fixture with half decent seat skews the data a bit. Total cost (entry) excluding Union Berlin vs Braga works out at £8.74 a game.

And so it all begins again
Maidenhead Utd vs West Ham United U23s - pre-season friendly. Decided to keep my friend who would travel 100 miles to watch a team of poodles wearing West Ham shirts company. Another ground ticked off even if the game itself was of less than zero interest to me. In reality it was a reasonable watch with the NL side even with some triallists being too strong and streetwise for the West Ham youths who were mostly U18s with a couple of overage players.
Maidenhead featured ex Gas loanee Jayden Mitchell-Lawson and he had a hand in two of the goals and was direct and a handful all evening even if some of his end product wasn’t the best.
The first goal came courtesy of a run down the right and shot from JML which keeper spilled at the feet of another Magpie who really couldn’t miss. Goal no 2 came from a looping header over keeper from a corner and the third was the pick of the goals - a real peach. A direct run from Maidenhead's Smith (looks a good player at this level) played the ball out wide to JML and his first time excellent cross was rifled home by onrushing forward. 3-0 at half time.
Maidenhead got a 4th after JML was taken off with a similar goal to the third - ball out wide on the right, cross and finish, though it did look to me like a West Ham player turned the ball into his own net. Game petered out after that with a raft of changes from both sides. Final score 4-0 to Maidenhead. £10 entrance, £7.50 for a mediocre bacon cheeseburger and £2.25 for a tea. It will be interesting to see how the Magpies use the £4M cash windfall from the sale of Max Kilman to West Ham. If I were one of their fans I’d want it invested in a new ground as their York Road HQ is a shabby hotchpotch with minimal scope for improvement. I’m surprised it is deemed fit for NL much less something like Southern league. None of the WH players really caught the eye and they had lots of pretty build up play with zero end product and did not defend well at all. Would not be surprised to see their no 11 Chukwuemeka Adiele pop up at L2 level though - perhaps somewhere like Bromley or Colchester. JML was the home player who caught the eye but looks a bit short of EFL quality to me Attendance 989

Brislington vs St Blazey Western League 1.
Visitors started off well and what looked like it was going to be an evenly matched encounter proved anything but. Bris’ first attack saw a rather limp shot left by away keeper to bounce back off the post for an easy tap in. Keeper had an afternoon to forget and proved he is not the next Nigel Martyn by fumbling a shot straight at him into his own net. St Blazey defence then proceeded to evaporate and Bris scored seemingly every time they got anywhere near the opposing penalty area. 5-0 at half time and you really had to feel that this was going to be a cricket score.
3 further goals were added in the second half with not Nige having a major role in at least two of them. Pick was the seventh where the retreating St Blazey defence invited the Bris player to shoot and he crashed a beauty into the top left corner from just outside the box. Game petered out as Bris rang the changes and the ref’s whistle saved the visitors from a greater embarrassment than the 8 goals conceded without reply.
Difficult to say how good Bris are as the visitors backline was so poor and non-existent . Att 150. £6 entrance, on line programme only and £6.50 for cold pint of San Miguel and a nice ham salad roll. Enjoyable afternoon in the sun and Ironmould Lane is a decent ground at this level with cover behind both ends and down the sides. Much nicer imho than Maidenhead’s 4 levels higher

I know Epping - £10 too much in my eyes and I only paid it because my WHU friend really wanted to go and it was a new ground. Personally I think they’d be better starting afresh rather than putting new stands in place but understand there is historic significance with York Road

Street AFC vs Paulton Rovers - Western League Prem last night.
Entertaining localish derby at Street’s neat Tannery Ground. Paulton were relegated last season after a disastrous season in Southern League South 1 whilst Street have been one of the stronger sides in Toolstation 1.
Rovers took an early lead when one of their players cut in from the left, hit a shot onto the right and the ball fortuitously rebounded onto Street left back who was rushing in to cover and instead buried it past his own keeper. Street had the balance of chances thereafter with two long range rockets excellently saved by Rovers goalie and a flowing move which ended with a diving header from a whipped in cross just clearing the bar. They deservedly equalised after a mazy run by one of their older heads taking him through Rovers backline and ended with a crisp finish. 1-1 at half time.
Street rang the changes throughout the second half replacing the older players with young ones and the changes improved them from a good side to an excellent one. They scored a terrific second when their no 7 - arguably best player on the night created some space for himself and curled a lovely finish into top right corner. They added another really good goal in added on time when another midfielder sold Rovers defence a peach of a dummy and slotted home. Final score a deserved 3-1 to Street who were a great watch on this showing.
£8 entrance, £2 for hard copy colour programme that was thin on content and £3 for a chicken pie
Plenty of covered terracing down both sides. Attendance 162 and a club I would go back to

Longlevens AFC vs Worcester Raiders Hellenic Premier League.
Longlevens play at Saw Mill End in the Gloucester suburb of Barnwood - not in Longlevens where home side’s clubhouse is located. Their ground is not much to write home about with a couple of rows of covered seating on one side and not much else. The game itself was mediocre at best. Raiders were well organised and the home side huffed and puffed but with little cutting edge in the final third. They created the better of the few chances in the first half with a couple of long range shots forcing decent saves from Raiders keeper. The match boiled over on the 35 min mark when an altercation on the touchline resulted in punches thrown and a straight red for a Raiders player. We couldn’t see if that was the right outcome.
Second half was equally as disjointed and about 10 mins in Raiders took the lead from an equally scrappy goal - corner headed across goal and bundled in almost on the line. Longlevens continued to huff and puff with little end product aside from one header which brought another good save from Raiders keeper. The game was drawing to a close when in the 93rd minute a power cut took out the floodlights and the game was abandoned. You really have to feel for Raiders as they were convinced they’d ground out a narrow win against the odds only to have it cruelly snatched from their grasp. They even announced on their Twitter feed that they were returning with 3 points.
Guessing attendance was about 100. £7 entrance, £3 for a pretty good hot dog and £1 for a tea. Online programme which I didn’t bother with.
Another ground done in Hellenic Prem but not one I’m likely to return to

Worcester City vs Walsall Wood FA cup extra-preliminary round
There’s a lot to like about Worcester City, not least their new home kit for the next season or two. They also play some easy on the eye football, have some decent attacking players and won the Hellenic Prem league last year by a country mile.
This season they will ply their trade in the Northern Premier League Midland division and here they faced fancied league mates. This was an evenly matched encounter with City shading the game on chances created. They had at least 3 good ones in the first half - a fierce Kyle Belmonte shot from distance that forced a decent save from Wood keeper, an effort from tricky left winger Liam Lockett that was neither cross nor shot and which rolled wide of the right post and a totally missed Dylan Hart header from an excellent Adam Mace cross. Wood created the odd chance but their best moment came in the second half from a free kick by their best player - Nick Clayton-Phillips whose corner bound effort was tipped onto the bar and the rebound then headed back on to the post. Wood had much more of the ball in the second 45 but City were also creating decent chances too but neither side was able to take one. As a result a replay on tuesday will be needed to separate the sides. As 0-0 draws go this one was quite watchable. £12 entrance, £5 parking and £2.50 for a decent hard copy programme.
City play their home games at Worcestershire FA’s Claines Lane HQ. The ground is not up to much and they will need somewhere better to ply their trade if they are to progress up the pyramid in future. Attendance 650 and the winners of the replay will face Dudley Town in the preliminary round Apparently the new kit is a retro one and they played in a similar strip in the 1930s - 1950s and in the early - mid 90s. They are fast becoming my favourite non-league team but I still inwardly cringe when I hear their fans refer to “City”.

Parking is pretty tight around Claines Laine. Could have saved the fiver and parked in the narrow lane outside but had someone clouted my vehicle I know I’d have regretted being a tightarse. Five pounds well spent for peace of mind.
Hope you are able to get to a game soon - enjoy reading your write ups

Saturday before last, 27 July I went to Buckland Athletic (Newton Abbot) v Welton Rovers as my son in law plays for Buckland and it's only a few miles from me.
I have watched on odd occasions before but I want to try to make it a regular thing and this was the first league game of the season. They have a lovely clubhouse and it's a friendly, well run club.
An 8-0 win made the day, however bizarrely they did not to the table, as Brislington also won 8-0 and topped the table on alphabetical order. Just.

Sporting Club Inkberrow vs Hereford Pegasus - Hellenic Prem
Inkberrow is a small village between Worcester and Stratford on Avon and they have a newish football club who have enjoyed a meteoric rise to step 5 on the football pyramid. They have clearly had lots of investment in their Sands Lane ground as the facilities are new if somewhat spartan, with two small stands along one side offering the only protection from the elements. They do have a decent clubhouse though.
Their opponents are well established at this level and took the lead within a minute of kick off. We missed the goal as we were walking to the opposite side in an attempt to catch the last bit of warmth from the setting sun. This was a bit of a futile effort as the wind whips across the pitch and it was getting chilly. I imagine this ground will be very bleak in the depths of winter. The home side knocked the ball around nicely and created a few decent chances that they were unable to take - either through some good saves from Pegasus keeper or because the ball just wouldn’t break kindly for them when ricocheting around the box. We swapped sides and had a great view from an elevated bank with tall hedge proving an excellent barrier to the cross pitch wind. Got talking to an FA match day officials assessor and it was interesting to see that we mostly saw the game the same way as him, but also would have called some decisions differently. The ref and lino our side weren’t great but also didn’t make any horlicks which altered the course of the match - a bit meh really or 5/10. 0-1 at half time.
Bought a welcome piping hot tea at half time (£1.70), pasty (£2.50) and a decent hot dog (£3.50). Second half was more even in terms of possession and just as it looked like it wasn’t going to be their night a break on the right fell kindly for their US CH to plant in the corner. There was still time for them to thump a shot off the left upright before the final whistle brought matters to a close. Not too bad a game and perhaps a fair result though Berrow shaded it on chances.
£7 entrance and guessing attendance was about 100. Apparently they had over 500 here on Saturday for their first ever FA Cup tie against Dudley Town. Nice club but probably at their zenith because of catchment area and facilities, although there is plenty of room for expansion. There are plenty of worse teams than them in this league so I expect them to stay up comfortably

Penrhiwceiber Rangers vs Goytre United - Cymru South
All 3 games we have attended over the bridge have been really enjoyable. Penrhiwceiber is a small ex mining village in the Valleys just south of Mountain Ash. Rangers’ Glasbrook field is a picturesque ground hemmed in by trees on one side, buildings behind both goals and a road and rows of houses on the other side separated by a large wall. They have a small stand on the tree side and a small terrace on the houses side with the top row a comfortable place to perch. Home side are newly promoted and the club and people are very friendly. As an added bonus the weather changed en route and the sun blasted away the grey drizzle that we passed through on the way to the ground. It turned out to be a glorious sunny day.
The game was initially closely contested with Rangers creating the better chances. However a rare break down their left flank led to a cut back from a tight angle and the ball was fired into the roof of the net. I thought home keeper might have done better to cut out the cross but he had no chance with the finish. 1-0 to Goytre then at half time.
Second half was an entirely different affair as home defence evaporated and they badly ran out of steam. They had 3 or 4 players who appeared to be a bit too fond of the excellent pastry products on sale in the catering ISO and Goytre’s superior fitness ensured they created plenty of chances which they started to take. Their second goal came from an excellent cross from the right onto the head of their skipper and third was another cross and diving header. Having missed a couple of chances of their own, Rangers got a goal back with a strange shot that looked as if it might have taken a slight deflection and wrong footed Goytre keeper. Goytre’s 4th goal came from an excellent long ball out of defence which was collected by best player on the day Keane Watts who waltzed through Rangers back line, rounded the keeper and rolled the ball home to earn the match ball. Final goal of the game was tucked away by a sub after home defence again went missing. Final score 5-1 to Goytre which was a fair refection in the gulf in fitness between the two sides.
£5 to get in, £1 for hard copy programme, £1 for an excellent sausage roll and £1.50 for an almost as good pasty, both of which had clearly been made in a local bakery rather than mass produced in a factory. £1 for a tea in a proper mug which gives them an extra brownie point.
Guessing attendance was about 80 and this was a really enjoyable day out at a ground I would return to. Unfortunately unless they replace their bunters or can get them to shed some timber they look set for a long hard season of struggle

Due to ongoing health issues driving long distances is a bit beyond me so will stick to Buckland and probably Teignmouth as I live at the top of the road. Welton looked ok for about the first 10 minutes of each half but as soon as they conceded the first goal their heads dropped. Speaking to someone in the clubhouse they are struggling financially and found it difficult to get a team.

Genuinely sorry to hear of your health issues TG. Saw Welton end of last season and they were lucky to salvage a point with two late goals against Ilfracombe who also weren’t great. Only stayed up cos TS league lost teams elsewhere. Think they’ve lost better players from what was a young side anyway so look doomed unless they get an injection of players and cash. TS league in current form looks a basket case with huge distances for small clubs to travel. You can understands why the likes of Bitton and Bris have voluntarily demoted themselves in recent seasons
