Mid Somerset cup, Draycott v Tumley Athletic,The Cider Barn just 50 meters away providing ample refreshments... no admittance fee here, possibly 25 attendees.Tunley keeper had one of those days you can dream of, despite losing eventually 6-0 it could well have been 18!!and that excludes the wasted opportunities of the Draycott attack. One serious note , halfway through the second half and we had a male streaker!! 😎 there was a wedding going on in the Memorial hall ( in the lower half of this playing field and it was assumed the guy emerged from that event for a bet...the ref couldn't "book him" as he never had a number 😊 Free entry and the Cider Barn 50 meters away... what's not to like? Grass roots football, it's the way forward.

When I started my journey through the lower tiers of the pyramid I had absolutely no idea what to expect. On the whole I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Supporting Clubs that are (usually) very close to their communities. Loads of volunteer help to keep these Clubs going. When you pay your entrance fee and buy a couple of pints - you know that money goes towards keeping these community assets going. Not going towards over-paid footballers, parastitic agents, Sky TV, US Hedge Funds and sport washing oppressive regimes. A mate of mine has not renewed his Watford season ticket - for the first time in 40 years. Just completely detached from his Club. As sadly am I. British football fans are being rinsed left right and centre. Ticket prices, merchandise, the cost of TV subscriptions and fixtures firmly scheduled to generate more money rather than looking after the supporters who actually bloody well fund the circus. German football looks after supporters first, and looks at profit afterwards. English football sold it's soul in 1992 to Sky. My rant looks very left-wing. At least that will make oldie smile.

Quite ...who can actually justify the cost of a replica football shirt at over £100;00 ( Arsenal to name one that I know of.....almost as if these clubs are trying to pay back the sponsorship via club tat!!

Smile I did. But agree with every word. As do I. The problem is that while people continue to fund the circus it will never stop. I’ve sort of drifted into this rather than it being a conscious decision. Was going less anyway as it is an expensive afternoon now and only one of my boys would come so eats up time we could spend together as a family. My friend who is a West Ham fan and still goes most weeks even to European away games suggested it and it has gone from there. I also wasn't enjoying the match day experience at home on saturdays. I’ll therefore go to grounds I’ve not been to before to get closer to the 92 and the odd home game but the groundhopping looks here to stay

Mind you even Taunton Town where I went today charge £47 for an adult shirt. Bad choice on my part - National League South vs Havant and Waterlooville. Really scrappy and disjointed game from start to finish and easily the worst game i’ve seen since our home defeat to Accrington last season. Highlight if you can call it that was watching the two home forwards trying to get either of the away centre backs sent off by falling over and holding their heads any time they came within 3 yards of them. At the same time they were constantly fouling and moaning at the ref. Havant had the best chances - their no 21 missing two golden opportunities - one in the first half where he tricked his way through the home defence only to shoot tamely at the keeper and one in the second half where he shot well wide from about 2 yards out. Just before the end Taunton got a soft penalty for a needless push by the Havant keeper but sub McCootie did the honourable thing and scuffed a limp shot about 5 yards wide. Second half was marginally better than the first but it really couldn’t fail to be. Amazing number of food outlets for a crowd of 877 including a wood fired pizza oven. Ground is a bit ramshackle but plenty of space for development if they were to get bigger crowds . Hopefully they steal from Yeovil’s catchment area. £14 entrance, £2 to park, £3 for hard copy programme and £6 for steak pasty of the type we used to get at the mem. Just as many recent gas games have been, it was a good afternoon out spoiled by the football. No-one really caught the eye. Better players were Jay Foulston and Zac Smith for the Peacocks, the two centre backs Mcnerney and Willson and Berkeley-Agyepong who was behind all the better stuff for the Hawks. Boris’ boy Tom was an unused sub for them

Boris’ boy Tom was an unused sub for them I fear that hyper-inflation at the top of football is filtering right the way down the pyramid. Hence £47 for a shirt in Nat League South and a whopping £25 spend before you get to the bar. That's not a cheap afternoon to watch tier 6 football. And you're still getting play-acting and abuse of the officials. So it's a bit cheaper than the EFL, but with less talent on display and the same deficiencies. Tier 7 in Essex isn't exactly a cheap day out either I'm thinking it's tiers 8 & 9 which are the 'sweet spot' (Community, value for money, sportsmanship) before you get down to 'over the park' football in tier 10 & 11. You should have gone to Bath City yesterday - a Pay what you Want Community day! Bath City - fan-owned and they seem to have the right sort of idea.

Kelvedon Hatch 1 Runwell Sports 2. Down in the depths of Essex Olympian League Premier Division (step 7). A 10 mile cycle through lovely country lanes to Kelvedon Hatch. Famous for its very well sign-posted and now ironically named "Secret Nuclear Bunker" (where the UK Govt would decamp to in the wake of a nuclear attack). Was going to pop in a local pub, but it looked dead. The ground is by the Village Hall and alongside some tennis courts. The big telecoms mast provides the backdrop. Bar not open. Waited for a chap to open the tea and coffee (£1). Runwell Sports is not a joke name. They hail from near Rettendon in Essex, famous for the execution of 3 drug dealers in the 90's. Kelvedon Hatch (KH) in red, Runwell Sports (RS) in light green shirts and grey shorts. RS had a giant 6ft 5" striker and the KH centre backs looked worried. They needn't have been. He won almost nothing in the air and his strike partner won nearly all the headers. Fairly even first half. KH took the lead from a decent cross from their right which was headed in by their best player (No.9). A little lucky to be 1-0 up at the break. KH had the better of the second half and they should have gone further ahead apart but the shooting was wayward. RS were increasingly frustrated and there was way too much bad language and abuse of the officials. OK, so the officials don't always get it right - but PLAY TO THE WHISTLE FFS. Last 20 mins RS ramped up the pressure and got on top. Around 85 mins a delivery to the far post saw the ball headed in low to the keepers left. KH heads dropped. RS were now in ascendance. Deep into injury time RS bundled the ball in the same post they had scored from earlier. Some gloating and more bad language. I thought they really let themselves down. Runwell Sports just about deserved the win. Bar due to open just after final whistle - but was shooting off to catch the England Chile RWC game. I asked why the bar wasn't open earlier - was told you wouldn't be able to take a beer out as that was against the rules. I explained that it wasn't. Probably just a jobsworth running the bar and keeping out the rif-raf. Kelvedon Hatch is quite posh. Free entrance. No programme. Coffee £1. If the bar had been open they could have earned some half decent revenue. Attendance - anywhere between 25 and 40 depending on when the snapshot was taken. Nice people run the Club. But they just don't have the set-up to challenge further up the pyramid. Attachments:

We are trying yo do different grounds each time and mixing up the leagues so Bath City admirable as they are and deserving of patronage are unlikely to get a look in. Will prob do one more game at tier 6 - Banbury in NLN and likely Oxford City in tier 5. The rest will be tier 7 and below. We’ve been really lucky with the games we’ve picked. All worth doing - even yesterdays but the ones that stand out have been Abertillery Bluebirds, Tuffley Rovers and Brimscombe and Thrupp. There always seems to be some sort of Rovers connection at these games too which adds to the interest.

AFC Hallen vs Welton Rovers Les Phillips Cup tonight.
Toolstation Western League 1 vs Toolstation Prem at neat and tidy Moorhouse Lane. An entertaining game with two teams whose defences dominated so chances were at a premium. Hallen took the lead shortly before half time when their left winger (who looked about 16) found himself unusually in a bit of space and fortuitously finished despite hitting his shot straight at the Welton keeper. Very little to choose between the two sides (you’d not have thought a league separated them) but the home side deserved their win as they created slightly more. They hit the post from a fierce shot from distance and their number 7 squandered a clear opening curling a shot to the left of the goal when he should have least tested the keeper. Both teams tried to play in the right spirit and the young ref had a relatively easy night apart from the end when things threatened to boil over. His final whistle came at the right time to keep things on An even keel and he did a good job helping the game to flow. No further goals in second half so ended 1-0 to Hallen.
Guessing attendance was just over 50. £6 to get in and £4.50 for two cups of tea and a pasty. No programme available.
Decent evenings entertainment at a decent ground with a small stand that would be the envy of many clubs three of 4 tiers above them in the pyramid

Woodford Town 4 Ilford FC 0. Essex Senior League (tier 9). Woodford usually play on a Friday night, so a rare Sat 3pm kick-off and a 20 minute drive through Chigwell to the Ashton Playing Fields. A pleasant afternoon in the late summer sun. Met up with a dis-connected ex-Watford ST holder, who was hoping for decent lower league game and convincing Everton win over Luton. Woodford have only been around since 2000, but been through a mind-boggling number of iterations before plumping for the rather pedestrian Woodford Town (Mauritius Sports & Pennant and Haringey & Waltham Development anyone?). They have been nomadic and only been playing back in Woodford since 2021. Despite their roaming existence and ever changing name, they attract decent support and average around 300. The friendly lady (they're always friendly at this level) behind the bar said that playing on a Friday evening they pick up additional Wham, Spuds and Arse support. Decent bar, good. Pitch surrounded by a running track, not so good. To the game - Woodford in Brazil colours and Ilford in Doncaster Rovers attire. Ilford the brighter and with a bit of pace up front. First blood to Woodford though as they bundled the ball in at the keepers left. HT and Woodford probably a little lucky to be up at the break. Ice cold Magners and back to the game. More even in the second half. Then the key moment. A Woodford attack was well defended and it looked liked it had fizzled out. Cue the keeper thinking he's in the premiersh*t, tries to chip a pass to the left back. Left back beaten off the ball, crossed in and a simple tap in. 2-0. Keeper then gobs off at the lino and the ref. Ref yellow cards him. Keeper continues to gob off. 10 minute in the sin-bin as the keeper petulantly throws his gloves and shirt to the floor. Refs should definitely use the sin-bin more at this level. Keeper replaced with outfield player. 5 minutes later Woodford work the ball down their left, cut back, goal, temporary keeper has no chance 3-0. Near full time the Ilford keeper comes back on, just as Woodford line up a dangerous free kick. "Wouldn't it be funny if the first thing he does is pick the ball out of the net" I quip. Bang on cue, Woodford dispatch the free kick into the keepers top left. 4-0. That was a bit tough on Ilford. But to be fair, their keeper was an idiot. Entry: £7. E-programme (yuk). 3 pints of Magners £14.10 (reasonable for this neck of the woods). Attendance: 112. (Everton 0 Luton Town 1. LOL).

In Oldie’s back yard tonight - Hellenic Prem Cinderford Town vs Westfields.
Really entertaining game with the home side taking the lead after about 20 seconds through a ball lumped forward, knock down by tall CF Norman and quick finish under the keeper by ex-gas player Lewis Powell. Westfields dominated things and went 2-1 up with two carbon copy goals where their attackers were allowed to run at the home defence, created some space and tucked away their chances. Powell then produced s smart finish from out on the left to level things up at half time. He then scored two more high quality goals - the third a screamer from the right into the roof of the net and the 4th a cool chip over the keeper. Westfields pulled one back shortly after with another good finish from the left but were unable to salvage anything from the game.
4-3 home win which was just about deserved on balance of play and both teams had players who looked good at this level. Powell was the difference though and you could see he had played at a higher standard. Interesting ground and I actually preferred to stand on the open side terrace to being in either of the small stands because of the better view. The terrace is slightly above pitch level and the stands have pillars and low roofs which make them feel claustrophobic. £7 entrance, £1 for cup of tea and online programme. Attendance was 142. Thought the officials did well despite the constant moaning from the Westfield fans there that everything was offside. Linesman on our side was a doppelgänger for Buster Bloodvessel.
Nice evening out enhanced by the result from the Mem

Union Berlin 2 Braga 3 European Champions League October 3rd. An early Tuesday morning flight from Stansted to Berlin Brandenburg. Bier and bratwurst at Pratergarten. Checked in at a budget hotel in Mitte, and jumped on the S Bahn to the Olympiastadion. Union traditionally have most their support in south east Berlin and the trains were pretty full as they pulled into the centre of town. The trains picked up supporters all along the route to north west Berlin. "Berlin ist rot & weiss" now. Hertha who? Packed, but all good natured. Supporters all drinking en route, no trouble though. Gave up my seat to a child and the Dad presented with me with a bottle of lager. Marvellous. Easy enough to pick up a quick Bitburger outside the stadium about an hour before kick off, and all going smoothly. Took the obligatory selfie in front of the entrance to the stadium, and felt a couple of spots of rain. Looked up, yikes. Cue a cloudburst of Wycombe vintage. Everyone ran for cover under the trees. That sort of rain. Now cold and very wet. The entrance to the Stadium was shambolic. About 1000 people in the (now just drizzle) slowly filtering into about 6 turnstiles. No stewards. 30 minutes of snail pace shuffling before thankfully getting my now rainsoaked ticket through the bar code reader. Despite the weather Union supporters made a terrific noise. Not as hostile an atmosphere as at the Alte Forsterei, but very impressive nevertheless. No flares? Bloody UEFA spoilsports. Beers flowing aplenty in the stadium. Union unfurled a big banner "UEFA stadium infrastructure regulations... You don't care about the sport, all you care about is money". Damn right. Union were 2 up after 40mins. Great - what could possibly go wrong from here? Well Braga scoring either side of half time for starters. Union well on top second half and pushing for a winner to satisfy the fanatical support. Missed an absolute sitter when a shot was hit straight at the keeper from 5 yards out. Sheisse! As FT approached I thought 2-2, first point on the board in the group stage, that's not so bad. Union pushed forward a little bit too ambitiously. You know what happens next, a quick Braga counter, some sloppy defending and ffs they score the winner in the 4th minute of injury time. Great strike from distance low to the keepers right. (Same time as conceding at the loss at Real in the previous game). Head in the hands moment. FFS. More shambolic queuing to get back on the trains, No stewards, no rail staff. A long wait for a train to pull in and a surge as the train drew into the platform. It really wasn't ruthless German efficiency. Maybe they should have stayed at the Alte Forsterei - but then 50,000 people would have missed out on seeing the game... Entry: Euro 85 (I missed out on all the cheaper seats due to tech issues). Bitburger: Euros 4.50. Attendance: 73,445. Cycled down to Kopernick the next day to pick up a programme. 2 Euros for 72 glossy pages. Cheaper and better than in the Isthmian Premier League. I watched the later ECL games back in Mitte after a very long hot shower had fixed my mild hypothermia. ManU lost to Galatasary at home. That cheered me up a bit. Und Niemals Vergessen Eisern Union. Middlezoy Rovers vs Hallen AFC Toolfix Western League Div 1 today.
Home team play right by the aerodrome in Westonzoyland about 5 miles from Bridgwater. It is a picturesque village and the ground has a large modern clubhouse but not much else. First season at this level for the home team after a 3rd place finish in Somerset county league last time around. Really scrappy game between two poor sides with the visitors winning comfortably without having to do too much. Two good goals - the first for Hallen from distance wide on the left and then a well crafted equaliser from a decent deep left wing cross and good volley from home left winger who had switched to right back. Two terrible pieces of defending from home centre back gifted Hallen two goals and they could have added more especially with the thumping header which came back off the post. Seems that all the crap referees were out in force today as the one here totally lost the plot and handed out more cards than a croupier at a casino.
Hallen ran out 3 - 1 winners but did not look anywhere near as good as when we saw them midweek against welton rovers. The home side look as if they will struggle to stay up
Surreal to see microlights and small aircraft taking off during the game.
£6 entrance and £1.50 for a hard copy programme which was almost entirely devoid of interesting content. Not a ground I would rush back to even though Rovers are clearly a force for good in their local community. Attendance prob about 50
Edit: Just discovered that scorer of Hallen’s first goal was Josiah McKayle who was in our academy. No idea if still with us. It was a really good strike. The lad has a bit of edge about him but think he is at his level based on this and the earlier game vs Welton

Waltham Abbey 2 Hadley 3 (Southern League Central Division - tier 8). Short drive down the Lee Valley to Capershotts. Slow service at the turnstiles meant a bit of a queue, but not as bad as at the Olympiastadion. Cue the first goal going in for Waltham Abbey before I'd entered the ground. Hadley are from Barnet and were formed in 1882. Red tops, black shorts (occasional Man U kit) vs the green hoops of Waltham Abbey (Celtic). WA in 6th place in the table, Hadley one from bottom. A pretty even contest with the Hadley No.7 and big No.9 looking useful. But a stupid tackle in the Hadley box led to a penalty and WA 2-0 up at HT. Hadley away fans (30-40 of them) made a bit of noise and had some interesting chants. A quick walk over the car park to pick up a San Miguel from the Clubhouse bar. Back over to the pitch clutching a plastic cup, sipping a cold beer in the unusually hot October weather. Grass roots football. My Union shirt attracted a bit of interest, chatted to a disgruntled Spurs supporter and a Bochum fan! 2nd half Waltham Abbey must have had something slipped in their HT drinks. Hadley causing problems and WA couldn't get hold of the ball. Two well taken goals and Hadley were level. WA didn't seem to know what to do. More pressure from Hadley and the inevitable winner was bundled in at the keepers right hand post. WA huffed and puffed but didn't really threaten to get back on level terms. So my second game on the spin with the home side going 2-0 up, only to go on and lose 2-3. Edit: The referee 'sort of' had a good game. He took no nonsense and was happy waving yellow cards for any back chat. Good. He also made quite a few very strange decisions. WA player charging into the box, tripped from behind, no card. Hadley player cleanly wins a 50/50 ball on the half way line - yellow card. Eh? Fair play to both sides for not disputing the very questionable decisions. A game played in good spirit nevertheless. Hoorah. Entrance: £10. £10! Up £2 on last season, poor show Waltham Abbey. Programme £2, 20 pages, mostly adverts. Can Magners £3.50, pint San Miguel £4.50. Attendance: 192.

Cinderford Town 1 Fairford Town 3
Hellenic League Premier Division
Sunny day up on the heights of Cinderford. £5 entry (concession), programmes free on line, £4.50 pint of Guinness.
A dire game, probably the worse performance I have witnessed from Cinderford in my six years of attending there. Too many players not to standard, but a core who are Southern League standard. Tactically it looked shambolic. After going two down instructions shouted from the coaches were openly contested by the club captain on the pitch, "wtf is going on" was loudly heard by everyone. A crowd of just 97 indicative of a club in decline. That is about 40% down on the last few years.
As for the actual match there is not much to report. A lot of kick and rush by both sides and a lot of running around with no discernible plan.
As I left I noticed the assistant manager in the car in front. I believe he walked out and quit.
Sad times. Cinderford Rugby got thumped at Blackheath as well.
I retreated to my local hostelry where a local known to me schooled me on the underground shafts and tunnels under the pitch at Cinderford. He even had an OS map on his phone showing the intricate work from a bygone age.
Amazing.

Night and day from last Tuesday then Oldie. Lewis Powell was the difference then though. Hope they can stop the rot. Clubs in a free fall tailspin are hard to pull out of it though

I was away last Tuesday so missed that game. I know a lot of the committee members there, an air of resignation was apparent. Did you go to that game last Tuesday?
