lets hope that contract is as watertight as can be
Sainsbury's has warned the outlook for the rest of the financial year will "remain challenging" after reporting a drop in like-for-like sales over the key Christmas trading period.
The supermarket chain said sales at stores open at least a year fell 1.7% excluding fuel in the 14 weeks to 3 January.
Total sales fell 0.4%.
However, Sainsbury's said the week before Christmas was a "record", with 29.5 million customer transactions.
The latest figures were also an improvement on the previous quarter, when like-for-like sales excluding fuel fell 2.8%, and were better than analysts' expectations of a drop in like-for-like sales of 2.5-4.4%.
Sainsbury's shares, which have fallen 36% over the past year, rose 1.3% following the trading update.

Sainsbury's chief executive Mike Coupe said he expected like-for-like sales in the fourth quarter to be similar to its first half performance due to "the uncertainty in the trading environment, food price deflation and price reductions".
"Broadly we sold the same amount of stuff last year, just at lower prices," he told BBC Radio 5 live.
He said the sales figures also reflected the trend of more frequent and local shopping, with its convenience business growing 16% in the quarter.
Christmas Eve marked Sainsbury's biggest trading day in its convenience stores, with sales totalling £8m.
The third quarter was also its biggest Christmas for online sales, with the chain delivering 110,000 orders in the three days to 23 December.
Its clothing business also performed well, with sales up 10% year-on-year.
Christmas jumpers were the stand-out performer, with sales doubling compared with last year and a snowman jumper proving its most popular design.
Price wars The figures come a day after Sainsbury's said it would cut the prices of 1,000 of its most popular products as part of a £150m programme announced in November.
Rival Asda announced similar plans on Tuesday, saying it would invest £300m in the first quarter of 2015 on cutting prices.
The plans mark the latest salvo in a bitter price war as the "big four" supermarkets, which also include Tesco and Morrisons, battle for customers.
A combination of increased competition from discounters Aldi and Lidl and customers shopping around for bargains mean none of the big four are expected to report an increase in like-for-like sales over the Christmas period.
Attention will now shift to Tesco and Marks and Spencer, which will both issue trading updates for the Christmas period on Thursday.
Phil Dorrell, director of retail consultancy Retail Remedy, said the third quarter numbers highlighted "the challenges facing Sainsbury's and the rest of the big four".
"Focusing overly on price could damage the reputation for quality Sainsbury's has built up over the years. It can't afford to cut corners on quality, it's not in a position to make many workforce savings, and it's no Asda, so either the suppliers have got to play ball or margins are going to be squeezed."
Tesco are cancelling 49 stores (mainly large ones as well)

Do we need yet another thread on this subject? Everyone knows the big supermarkets have problems at the moment - they will pass though and once things settle down things will look more clear.
The short answer is "we don't know what (if any) effect this will have in the sale of The Mem". No amount of forum speculation will change that so let's forget about something none of us can do anything about and concentrate on the team for now, which looks even stronger after the Gateshead result last night!

no one has to respond, if they don't wish
As for Tesco closing smaller stores, it is the non-profitable ones they are closing

So why do you want to talk about the team ? We don't have a game for the best part of 2 weeks, can you not leave your football talk until the day before when we may know abit more information.... The same applies to football & Non football talk

I wish on the big threads there could be a summary of the thread, 23 pages is a bit of a mammoth thread to read through for the part time visitor. Then as and when there is an update the master summary can be tweaked. The main sainsbury thread is daunting for the first time visitor!!

As the headline says it is the latest Sainsbury news. It doesn't have to be read, no one forces anyone to read the post. It's a forum where people post news and views and their thoughts on BRFC..... Or should we have a complete black out of anything to do with UWE until Nick "Moses" Higgs tells us we have arrived at the promised land.....

Talking of the team - what is the view of how they will come back from the break? Hopefully it will be seamless and will carry on as before. No reason to suspect otherwise. But a bit like a footy game - sometimes the second half is different to the first half. You almost want to keep the momentum going.

Its all relevant because the £300m invested in price reductions has to come from somewhere. Cancel 10 stores like the UWE and there you have it (less compo where applicable).

Assuming The Mem store is all systems go, that store alone will cost £50m by the time they pay us, knock the ground down, build the store etc

I opened this thread hoping it was going to be about Nectar points. no good news there...as they have devalued them, now only one point instead of two for the previous value of sale.. thats watertight!! Sainburys' have said so!!

Interesting article and it puts the lie to "big stores bad, small stores good" - it is about specific performance in the locality.

That's not how forums work - if you have new information, then you generally start a new thread. You don't want to add news to the end of a long existing thread, and new information can then be lost.

Then as and when there is an update the master summary can be tweaked. The main sainsbury thread is daunting for the first time visitor!! Feel free to write one Ah - but if someone did that then someone else would reject it as not being a full accurate summary of the thread and containing inherent bias. Alternative summaries would then be proposed and there would then be a cavalcade of posts debating alternative summaries which would no doubt result in deeply entrenched positions between supporters of the 'old school summary' and the 'new modern upstart summary' supporters who don't know their born. There would then be several more threads developed in which various proponents of a summary took pot shots at those who took a different approach, this would then mushroom until we needed to summarise those threads etc etc.. Personally I think it's fair enough to start a new thread on this subject from time to time in order to avoid mammoth 23 page discussion threads.
