Don't think he wanted to play for a different club though. He turned down a lorry load of cash and the probability of medals to stay with "his" club. Very surprised Liverpool are letting him go.

Back when he used to be good, there was an annual charade where Gerrard held out for the best deal he could get at Liverpool whilst openly courting other clubs.
He's done very well out of his 'love' for 'his' club.

I once read a story in a fairly reputable newspaper, that the Liverpool ''mafia'' had told Steven Gerrard that if he signed for Chelsea he would put himself and his family ''at risk.'' Mind you it's best not to believe everything that you read in newspapers, but it does make you wonder as the story was quite credible at the time.
Although having said that Gerrard clearly didn't sign for Chelsea . . . or any other club for that matter.

I agree - one of a generation of very good England players who probably all would have benefited from playing in Spain or Italy at some point.
It's just an opinion but I think if the likes of Gerrard, Lampard, Owen, Ferdinand, Cole etc had played a couple of seasons in their early 20's somewhere like Barca or Real or AC Milan England may well have won the World Cup (also if they hadn't hired the charlatan Eriksson). Just learning to counteract a different style of football and learning to play at a pace that is more typical at international level would have benefited them. Personally, I'm not all that bothered about it (find it harder to care about England as it's so clear the players don't much anymore and international football in Europe is broken) and I understand why they didn't (why bother if you can make such good money staying where you are?) but I think they'd have become better players and England a better team.
It was clearly more a case of Liverpool holding onto Gerrard than Gerrard showing loyalty to Liverpool but I don't hold that too much against him; it's the reality of the current incentive structure (Lampard may yet deny Chelsea the Championship this season and I can remember when before all that he was proudly displaying his West Ham heritage....). Gerrard deserves his Liverpool legend status but surely the lack of a Premiership title medal will haunt him in retirement. Best English player of his generation in my view but I particularly like the type of box to box all energy player that he is - in truth I don't think there's much between him, Scholes and Lampard and ultimately England wasted the lot of them one way or another.

I could have recalled much more of the story, but erred on the side of caution.

He absolutely was set for Chelsea until those Scouse scally muppets sent him death threats He has finally realised that he has ruined his career at Anfield, fair play to him though he has regretted it ever since that u-turn, hence why he has helped Chelsea win more trophies than his own boyhood(Yeah, right! Its not like theres proof of him drenched from head to toe in Everton gear is there?) club He always helps Chelsea out when he can, scoring an own goal to help win Chelsea the Carling Cup, passing the ball straight to Didier Drogba to help Chelsea win The Premier League, and then slipping on his arse to give the ball to Demba Ba to hammer the final nail into his and Liverpools title dreams So although never a Chelsea player, Thanks for the memories Stevie
