After the improved performance at Chester on Saturday I was interested to see how we would fare against the best team (at the moment) in the Conference and I certainly was not disappointed in a pulsating first half that Barnet could not have complained about if they had been 4 or 5 goals down. They looked like a very poor side (they obviously are not) as we tore past them time and time again. I can't recall seeing so many crosses coming over and so much possession and good passing movements in a long time. Barnet looked shell shocked from the first whistle as Mansell and Sinclair controlled the midfield, continuously closing down the opposition and winning possession and then running at the opposition. Monkhouse and Brown foraged forward with brilliant understanding and Della Verde tore into the full back until Martin Allen withdrew him to save him further punishment. The only worrying aspect was that for all this blistering attacking play we only scored the one goal but i am sure that the goals will come now we have Blissett who even if not playing well is a handfull for two central defenders and creates acres of space for others to move into.
Mildenhall 5 Not really involved at all (and that includes the goal!!) One good save low down but to be honest we could have had the Torquay goalkeeper in goal last night and wouldn't have conceded such was our dominance of the game. IMO should have done better on the goal whether in lining up the wall or his positioning behind it.
Lockyer 6 A lower mark than the rest of the defence due only to giving the ball away too many times in the second half but had a good first half and kept his winger under control. His actual defending was first class but needs a lot more work on his passing
Parkes 8 Tom has come back to his best form thankfully and brought the ball out well and covered well allowing the Barnet forwards no time.
McCrystal 8.5 MOM I have been very critical of him but last night he was superb against a very strong player in Akinde. The reappearance of Trotman meant he had to perform well and for me he gave a Man of the Match performance.
Brown 7 Outstanding first half when he continually ripped Barnet apart and put in a number of good crosses. Not so prom in ent second half but did hid no 1 job defending well throughout.
Mansell 7.5 Battled throughout the game and held the midfield together allowing Sinclair to charge everywhere.
Sinclair 8 It amazes me that he has not played at a higher standard but very pleased he is ours. A tiger in the tackle and covers every inch of grass. Superb performance just a shame he doesn't have Ollie Clarke's shooting ability because if he did he would be the most complete midfield player for us in years. Salisbury supporters said we would love him and they are 100% right.
Monkhouse 7 Won everything that came at him in the air, had a great understanding with Brown and played some great passes and always looked confident on the ball. His pass to Matty Taylor for the first goal was sheer class. Seemed to tire second half but i felt he should have been kept on up front for longer as once he had left together with Blissett we had no real aerial threat
Della Verde 8 A very talented player. Very much hope we can keep him much longer but doubt it unless we can get a season loan. A cheeky bid would not go amiss!! Ran the left back ragged in the first half hour to the point of surrender when Allen substituted him but felt he tried too much in the second half but still caused Barnet problems.
Taylor 7.5 Took his goal well and showed good movement throughout. should have had at least another goal but his all round play is very good. Could yet gain more from the signing of Blissett than any other player.
Blissett 6.5 This could turn out to be the signing of the season as even if he is not playing to his best he is a real handfull and it took two defenders to mark him. Unlucky not to score with a brilliant overhead kick..was it a penalty? I'm not sure but it was one helluva effort. Takes up positive positions and makes defenders work rather than have him in their pocket like some of our recent strikers.
Balanta 6 Looked short of match practice which is understandable but still managed to score one and possibly should have done better with another header. I am sure he is going to be class at this level as he showed some glimpses of skill.
Harrison 5 Didn't really get in the game against two experienced central defenders but to be fair didn't really receive the ball to feet where he could have caused problems
Goldberg Not long enough to give a mark but showed something that makes me think he could be worth taking a punt on. If we continue to play like last night he will not get a lot of game time in his month but I see in him something that Marcus can work on and one for the future.
Ref 4 Standard Conference ref. Should have had the conviction of his decision on the penalty. Together with his linesman not really very good.
DC 7 Can't fault his team selection and I think we are going to see continued improvement from this team which he has put together. No other team in this league has a stronger squad.
