Not sure on this one however it is the sort of game that we would have lost 1-0 in the past and when Kidderminster scored I would have willingly taken the point however Sinclair should have scored the winner and because of that it was probably two points lost. To me this game really showed two things 1) The opening 20 minutes gave signs of what this team could be like with a bit of confidence and the next 55 minutes showed us as we are at present-pretty solid but not enough invention and creativity to win the match with too much relience on passing the ball back to defenders who cannot pass the ball well.
The final fifteen minutes provided a demonstration of a willingness to fight to the end and almost clawed victory from defeat.
Mildenhall 6 Distribution varied from quick throwing of the ball to the usual erratic kicking. Wouldn't blame him for the goal but would like to see him being more commanding from corners but overall he is one of the best keepers in this League.
Lockyer 6 Most of his defending is top class but if he is to fulfill his obvious potential he must improve his passing. He is not helped by the willingness of the central defenders to stay back rather than push up quickly and the willingness of the midfield players to also stay deep and pass the ball back to him. It is quite difficult to realise he is still a youngster as he has matured well beyond his years and it seems he has been in the first team for ever.
McCrystal 6 Solid defensive performance and that is all we can expect from the skipper. No glaring mistakes and his performance is "exactly what it says on the tin" with no frills and graces.
Parkes 6.5 His only error was his failure to mark on the goal otherwise had a very good game and was willing to bring the ball out from the back. When he does this we should really be looking for the rest of the defence to get out quickly and IMO we lack the willingness to sprint out and leave opponents in an offside position.
Brown 6 Solid and provided a good service to his winger in both halves. Nothing spectacular but nothing stupid.
Mansell 5 Good free kick but failed to dominate the midfield area and I wonder whether his Manager is pulling the strings and not allowing him to move forward. IMO not having him as Captain is a waste of his ability in that role and using two wingers to the detriment of a third central midfielder is making his job very difficult especially as Sinclair does tend to go "everywhere" which means Mansell has to cover a lot of ground and "opponents"
Sinclair 5.5 Not one of his better games but his attitude is superb. Seems to be trying to pass the ball longer but IMO is much better passing the ball short and accurately and thereby rarely giving away possession. Should have scored the winner when the chance came but it has to be taken into account that him and Mansell are generally outnumbered in the central midfield.
Martin 5 Didn't think he deserved to be substituted so early as he put in a lot of running and crosses particularly in the good opening twenty minutes however it was probably justified in that Delle Verde was far more dangerous playing on the left.
Brunt 4 Allowed himself to be outfought and out manouvered far to often and was not helped at all by a poor referee. Don't really see the point of his long throws either because he is the player who should be the target for such throws. The trouble is now that we don't have any other option as far as a physical presence up front unless we play Monkhouse there.
White 4 Really wanted him to do well but not really at the races and is probably a luxury we can't afford as not a hard worker and also doesn't look likely to score at the moment. Showed some good touches but not enough to warrant his place.
Della Verde 8 MOM Very much hope we can keep hold of him for the season. Best player on the pitch by a country mile. Good in possession, confident in his own ability and what a delightful crosser of the ball he is. Made a big difference to have some low crosses coming in and made the goal for Taylor. The trouble is that it is also possible that White could score goals if given the service from the left which he supplied in the second half and possibly a White/Taylor partnership could work with that supply.
Taylor 7 Showed a predatory instinct with the goal and unlucky with a header. His movement and control has never been doubted and his appearance yesterday changed the game. Perhaps being dropped was the kick up the backside he needed but perhaps what he really lacked all along was LOW crosses from the left.
Harrison 6.5 Some lovely movement and actually won a few balls in the air. have the feeling that at the moment a substitute role for Ellis is the best move.
Clarke 5 I think we looked better with the third midfielder and when played is the only one with a goal threat as Mansell rarely gets far enough forward and Sinclair runs everywhere which often leaves the midfield open. Clarke's presence tightens this area up.
DC 5 Personally feel he is playing with the defence and midfield too deep to the detriment of our ability to control a game. Really has to make up his mind about Leadbitter because to keep bringing him from playing to completely out of the squad is not going to do anything for the player. I am still unsure as to whether we should be looking as a priority for a goalscorer or for a central midfielder who can create and dictate the pace of the game. In all honesty we could probably do with both!! Be interesting to see what Balanta can offer us.
Referee 4 Another poor present from the Vanarama League!! Blatant penalty missed and allowed the opponents to bully us although a lot of that was probably our own fought by not competing back.
Kidderminster 6.5 Much better team than I thought they would be .Used their physical presence at both ends to great effect and set out to bully us and not make it easy - and succeeded.
Overall in many aspects a disappointing game and Delle Verde apart lacking quality. yet again if only we could produce a finish to the good football played early on then maybe we could relax and play to our ability. I feel we are not far off a good side but need that bit of quality which may mean Balanta coming good and two other new recruits.
