Just for completeness - or confusion maybe - there is also a two match red card ban. For foul/ abusive language or gestures I think. Simples......

A straight red for a bad tackle doesnt always mean a 3 match ban. It depends on what the ref's report classes it. Violent conduct = 3 match ban. Professional foul = 1 match ban. Like Mildenhall only got 1 match ban at Eastleigh. By the way im not comparing Leadbitters tackle to Mildenhalls foul when they both got reds but it depends what the ref has reported the incident to be. I havent seen anywhere where its been said he had a 3 match ban. If I did I wouldnt have made this thread would I. I obviously missed it which is why I asked for someone to enlighten me if it was either a 3 match ban or is he injured. All you had to say was it was a 3 match ban instead of questioning why I was asking. Good grief. This is why I often avoid posting. Thanks anyway. All OK but how could a two footed lunge be a professional foul i.e. stopping a goal scoring oppertunity. Good question. In the event off 2 offences being committed simultaneously, the offence with the greatest sanction is always the one punished, so if both serious foul play and denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity, then the sending off will be for serious foul play, 3 match ban. In a similar way, if a player in an offside position when the ball is played by one of his team mates interferes with play by punching the 'keeper on the nose, its a red card (for violent conduct) and a direct free kick, not an indirect free kick for the offside.

There are always the bright sparks who think they know better than others. You asked a question which was not unreasonable and all that it needed was a polite answer however instead people show themselves up. Pathetic. Personally i think the game has been ruined by the confusion on judging a tackle on whether the boot has come off the ground. The sending off on the Barnet player was the most questionable decision. He went for the ball and got the ball but his feet were off the ground but the opposing player arrived AFTER the ball had been touched by the Barnet player. On this case it means that ANY ball where the feet come off the ground should be a sending off even if an opponent is nowhere near. Its absolutely ridiculous as was Monkhouse's sending off. How do you decide on any jump if it was led by the elbow? The arm has to go somewhere and most of the time it is clear to see that there has not been intent. What is the real intent of making the rules? It should be to avoid injury but to be honest most bad injuries are caused by playing on poor pitches and all the rules have done is make tackling a dying art. There's so many myths and confusion surrounding simple concepts in football, so personally I find it mildly annoying when someone states some that is incorrect as a fact. Btw the judgement is: Careless: direct free kick Reckless: direct free kick and yellow card for unsporting behaviour Excessive force (i.e. use of force far greater than necessary): direct free kick and red card for serious foul play So in your elbow example, the force behind the elbow is the defining point.
