That's the only way I can describe today. The better team by a mile lost. I have said all through this season that the way we play is also governed by the way the opposition play and IMO today was one of our best performances of the season and we restricted a team who had drawn their last three league games under a New manager to very few chances and lost only due to one of the poorest penalties I can remember given away. I can offer no excuse whatsoever for a handball by Mark McCrystal when there was no danger whatsoever and would drop him now for Tuesday.
Many say the standard of League 2 is a mile away from the Conference but todays performance and the results of some other teams in our division today do not say this. We comfortably handled Tranmere on their own patch and a draw was the least we deserved. If we had found the right goalscorer we would now be sat either top or just a couple of points off the top of the Conference and in the second round of the FA Cup.
Mildenhall 6 Couple of good saves ,one dodgy moment but overall he had very little to do.
Lockyer 7 Very steady game at the back, calm in possession and carried the ball forward well. He doesn't get beaten very often even though it is not his best position. His passing is questionable at times but today i felt he used the ball well.
Parkes 8 MOM Tom is returning to top form and did nothing wrong whatsoever today. Strong in the air, comfortable on the ground and won the majority of the balls he challenged for.
McCrystal 5 Cost us the game with a ridiculous handball and almost caught out a couple of times misjudging the bounce of the ball and lacking in pace. Other than that played reasonable but IMO he is too prone to mistakes even at Conference level and the quicker Trotman is back the better.
Brown 6.5 Reasonably strong game from Lee Brown. Not much got past him and he tried hard to get us moving forward and gave a capable performance. Put in a wild shot near the end which was greedy when there were a few better options available.
Mansell 7 Battled around the midfield, winning the ball well and getting us moving forward particularly in the last 30 minutes when it was all one way traffic.
Sinclair 7 Like Mansell battled for every ball and spread the ball around well. His short passing keeps us in possession and rarely gives the ball away. On a couple of occasions he played very ambitious long passes but he covered acres of the ground and makes a big difference in the competitiveness of our side. Clarke is deadlier but Sinclair gives us a much better chance of retaining possession and we look a much better side with him in the centre of midfield.
Gosling 5.5 What he does is generally good and has a certain quality about his play but this does not happen often enough and he gets lost to the game far too often.
Martin 4 Put in a few good crosses but another who becomes lost for far too much of the game and who couldn't score a goal if he played until midnight. Had two good chances in the first half and yet failed to hit the target and second half did little to impact the game.
Brunt 7.5 This was the Ryan Brunt we knew. Competed for everything, won most in the air, held the ball up well and brought others into the game. Should definitely start again on Tuesday but with whom? I would be tempted to start him with White.
Taylor 7 His general game today was very good but it is unfortunate that his main job in the side is to score goals and he rarely does this. His control, hold up play and passing ability was excellent but you can't afford to have two players doing this with neither really looking like scoring. If we can find somebody to score goals regularly then perhaps we could use Matty in "the hole" because other than scoring goals he is a very good player.
Harrison 6 Ellis is quite frustrating because he did some really good things when he came on but also some poor things however he certainly increased the intensity of our forward play when he came on but should have equalised or at least got his shot on target at the death.
Della-Verde 6.5 Looks to be a very good crosser of the ball and IMO should have been used much earlier for either Gosling or Martin. He looked to make things happen and appears confident in his ability. I feel he should be played on the left side but will leave others to comment on that. Should certainly start on Tuesday.
Cunnington Really not on the pitch long enough to mark. I feel that he probably would score more than Brunt but is not as good as Brunt played today in his general play. it could be a possibility to try Cunnington with Brunt up front but the lack of pace could rule out this.
Clarke 7 Must be really as frustrating for him to watch as us. We outplayed Tranmere today and deserved to win but ended up defeated. Feel he should have started Della-Verde and brought on White for the last 15 minutes rather than using Cunnington but overall i was very proud of the way the lads played today.
Referee 5 Certainly not the worst referee we have had by a long way but was a little lenient at times.
