Every manager Richards played under at the Mem and there were loads ..none of them really selected him very often as a consistent starter. He had chances to establish himself but poor form and lack of goals always seemed to result in him being used as a sub on more occasions. He was one of those frustrating talents who never fulfilled their potential as a promising young striker. Surely until we did the ill-fated swap with Gow Richards had actually estblished himself as a first team regular? I'm still not sure why we don't try and get him back on loan as if we can get Tranmere to pay half his wages he's not a bad signing at the level and I assume he'd jump at the chance to move back to the Bristol area. I'd sooner him in the quarters agian than Lee Hughes!!

Typical Elliot Richards performance - did some nice things on the ball when he was running at us but didn't make himself enough and didn't do enough when not on the ball. Very frustrating player. I never really saw much beyond a kind of 'luxury player' tag - sort of guy who when you are 2-0 up and there's lots of space in the game looks superb but when you are in a battle he goes missing unless someone puts it on a plate for him. Ultimately didn't work hard enough or intelligently enough off the ball for me and that's what will prevent him achieving his potential.

Richards lookes OK for us last season in his spell before he was transferred and I can't recall us being 2-0 up often last season?

Richards lookes OK for us last season in his spell before he was transferred and I can't recall us being 2-0 up often last season? I must have seen him play 10 times last year and I thought he looked awful in pretty much every one of those games - in fact I think last season was the least effective I saw him. The previous year I thought he'd looked good when Ward came in and maybe he was at last ready to push on. It just didn't seem to happen. I certainly don't think he would have been the difference in us staying up however bad the Gow deal turned out to be. Whenever he played up front he never looked a threat to me, whenever he played wide he drifted in and out. He always looked best in that debatable 'in the hole' type position but you need a team set up around you to make that work and he wasn't worth that investment for me. Can't see him ever going further than he currently is - impact player in League 2 sounds about right for him. I found him an immensely frustrating player to watch - like someone who didn't really know his own game.

Richards was with us for 5 years under multiple managers and never looked like being anything more than a peripheral player so I think in Richards case the evidence currently suggests that judgement is probably about right.

Tranmere must think he is a bit part player. Not on the team sheet last night.

I don't think Richards was ever going to be a world beater - but I am pretty adamant that if he had the chances Taylor has been given this season he would have bagged more than 3 conference goals.

I'm not massively convinced by that - I always felt he didn't have particularly good strikers instincts or that much composure. I do think he would cause chaos in the Conference running from deep though. But that's not really the point - in theory Richards should be an experience League player now and instead he still seems to be strugglingt to crack into a poor League 2 side. Suggests that after 5 years there's probably enough evidence to suggest that he's not going to ever amount to much more than an impact player. I think that's more down to his lack of football instincts than lacking in base talent - I've seen less talented players have far more successful careers that's why it's frustrating. At times you can see why he could be a player- most of the time you can't.

On that note, does anyone remember the glaring miss last season up the tent end, when Ellis put him through on an open goal....he slid the ball the wrong side of the post in amazement?!!! Of course he finished some wonderful goals, but his stats and alleged off field antics tended to take focus with us..

I've always maintained some sort of "hope" in Richards for as long as he has been with us, but now he's gone and we have to let him go, too. There's no evidence as to why he'd be a threat even at this level because players here mark tight, play dirty and I can perfectly see a goalless Richards hobbling away to the bench, hand in thigh, and missing 4-5 games.
