from the Telegraph today...
How our shopping habits have changed David Gray, a grocery analyst at Planet Retail, says people are now shopping more frequently, visiting multiple shops but buying fewer items on each occasion. “People are shopping differently and are definitely more savvy,” he says. Because the discount stores don’t offer such big ranges, Mr Gray says people tend to top up at smaller, local supermarkets for branded items. But he predicts that this habit may change as Aldi and Lidl offer more branded products. “The discounters are becoming more mainstream.” Mr Gray says most customers want simple pricing, rather than having to hunt around for the best deals and coupons. “Consumers are getting tired of supermarkets offering brand match and loyalty schemes, they just want low prices,” he says. An average family of four will spend at least £225 a month on food, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Warren Buffett says his decision to buy a big chunk of Tesco was a huge mistake. But I'm not yet seeing how the landscape has really changed for supermarkets - they just need to get back to giving the customers what they want, the economies of scope and scale should still work?

Morrison's have gone lower priced and our introducing some new card thing.
Sainsbury's have reduded the points you get on your nectar card (presumably to lower on price somewhere)

wasn't a mistake - it seems very germane to the future of the gas to me

Sainsbury's are now only brand matching with Asda, and seem to be offering lower prices rather than all the confusing 3 for 2 offers etc.
I've got time on my hands at the moment, so tend to split my shop between two of the big four, to get the benefit of the best offers. I haven't explored Lidl or Aldi yet though, so my habits might change when I do!

Now they don't, and just have some legal odds and ends to go through to complete the backing out process. Why they changed their mind is almost a footnote.

Is that a new Sainsbury's Local about to open on the junction of Kingsway and Bryant's Hill? When they want to, they get on with it. They have deep pockets (interest income last year on loans and receivables nett £128m, assets circa £4.8 billion) and they are probably already paying their legal team anyway, let's hope something is agreed before the cost of battling them becomes a major problem.
