fellow Gas,
first of all, I did not really know where to put this thread, so I put it in the Gas Guzzler. I hope I didn't do anything wrong with that.
Now then, allow me to take a bit of your time to introduce myself to you all. My name is Jan, I am 27 years of age, live in Belgium and I am very proud and happy to finally have joined this forum for Bristol Rovers fans. The reason I have joined is pretty clear, I am a Gas fan myself. I can hear the remarks coming; a Belgian supporting the Rovers? That is where I would like to do some explaining.
For years now I am following the English lower league football. Mostly due to myself playing Football Manager for years, but also because I think this is the purest form of football there is. Fans are really fans, no bandwagoners, going to the stadium to watch games is fun and entertaining. Now all those years I didn't really follow a club in particular, though I had sympathy for a couple. Which clubs those were is of no relevance really, but of course the Rovers were one of them. The reason why I liked this club so much are diverse; the shirts are just gorgeous with the blue and white quarters, really special, the badge is the best there is, Memorial Stadium with its rugby stand, a great history (though as a Belgian I cannot really relate to that) and at that moment a fantastic forward in Rickie Lambert. Although the club has taken a few steps back ever since the beginning of my self-proclaimed love for the Rovers, I never lost track of them. I always followed the club, the results, the news, the transfers.
Gradually my sympathy for the club grew, while for the other clubs it went away. It grew so much that I finally was able to call myself a real fan of the club, I speak about it among friends, who do not understand it at all, at work, with my wife. No-one seems to understand why I support that club in the Conference Premier, but they don't have to, it is my thing, I love to do this, it just feels right.
I have not yet visited Bristol or the Memorial Stadium, but it is definitely in my plans to visit it this season still. I would love to be part of the atmosphere, to finally watch them play.
Besides football, I am a very avid American sports fan as well, supporting the Detroit teams; the Lions in the NFL, the Tigers in the MLB, the Red Wings in the NHL and the Pistons in the NBA.
My expectations for this forum are pretty high, I hope to learn a lot about the club still, hope to take part in many nice conversations about the Gas, as well as football in general, hope to get to know many nice people here. I would also like to say, as I am new here and I need to learn a lot still and find my place on here, that in the beginning I am going to read a lot, not so much take part in conversations yet.
Last I would like to ask whether you guys have any advice for me, like books to read, websites, online radio broadcasts, live streams? Please let me know then, I am very eager to learn so much more about this amazing and wonderful club.
Should there be any questions for me, feel free to ask.
Up The GAS!!
cheers,
Jan
