Bristol Rovers manager Darrell Clarke on lookout for a striker after blank against Forest Green. "We've got a group of lads who are trying their best, but we're not being ruthless enough at the top end of the pitch. The chances we missed were gilt-edge, and I can't keep saying it. That's why I put in a bid for a striker this week.
"It's there for all to see, I need a striker who is going to put the ball in the back of the net regularly.
"We've had golden opportunities to get something out the game, and to change the game, and we haven't. It can't keep happening, but, like I say, I can't go into panic mode.
"I was trying to get in a striker before today, but the bid was turned down."
How long have we been after this mystical striker? Seems like years.

Ask 'Arry if we can loan Austin from QPR, he might start scoring at this level.

Surely DC needs two strikers in. Brunt on loan (if you count him as a striker), Taylor not doing it (say no more), Balanta not fit, Cunnington soon going back, White and Gosling are supposedly strikers but not scoring well, little making a mark from the Youth team and Ellis not rated as a starter.

Thank goodness he now seems to realise that Cunnington, Taylor and White are not the answer...
Proof of this will be what he does over the next three weeks or so...

To state the obvious if we don't sort our front line out we are in for another season of hoofball and s**t refereeing and village greens. We could be top by now instead of languishing outside the playoffs

This is difficult. Last year people were saying "Let's get Jamie White in, we can afford him". Then when we signed Taylor people were saying "what a quality striker". Make up your minds! I feel sorry for Taylor, he always has a chance or two at the Blackthorn and just as he looks up there are 1500 gasheads, with their mouths open................... not a pretty sight and no wonder he misses.

Ah, so its the fans fault for attending and their expectations that a striker should score.... So is it lower crowds we need or lower expectations?

As we are out side of the transfer window the "bid" can only be to sign someone on loan or a unattached player or is it different in the Conference?

What are you saying LP Gas? Do you mean he is trying to get the ball in their mouths? If so he is making a much better job of it than putting it in the net!!!

Composure. Can it be taught? I think it can! Matty Taylor at the moment reminds me of Jason Roberts Obviously not in terms of his ability, but his current run of form is similar Roberts only scored 1 goal in his first 15-16 games and got a bit of stick from the crowd and looked out of his depth, but then he got a 2nd half hat-trick against Welling in the FA Cup 1st round and then he couldn't stop scoring after that and ended up getting over 20 goals that season I think Gary Penrice had a lot to do with it, in terms of mentoring and coaching him Matty Taylor is not Jason Roberts of course, but perseverance does sometimes pay off! He may get a some goals against Dorchester and get some confidence and look a completely different player, who knows?

I am not sure Dorchester away is going to be a free scoring game for Matty Taylor to score in. I think it will be a lot tougher than some are thinking.....

Every game is difficult when you play exactly the same way and have great trouble taking chances when they do come along. Against a team like Dorchester we really should be taking the game to THEM but that seems to be alien to Clarke and he would rather we defend deep and attack on the break. No easy games this season. I just hope we can sneak it and get in the first round proper then draw Wycombe at home.

We had 5 clear cut chances against FGR, how many do you expect a Rovers team to create in one match against tough opponents?
If we'd created 10 we'd have probably still missed them all the way so many chances went begging, whilst Taylor's this week's forum punchball, Martin, Ellis & Trotman all failed to even hit the target

It doesn't matter how many chances we created, they were created out of no real pattern of play. We need to sort that out before players should be recruited.

We need to sort that out before players should be recruited. we do have a pattern of play,,our central midfield tends to hold and we try to get the ball out wide to create chances from wide,it worked pretty well down the left with lee brown and martin for a while but martins form has nosedived,,,most teams in lge 2 and conference play a lot of long balls because of a lack of technical ability and the risk involved therefore in playing out from the back,at the start of our good run we played a mix of short/long which has slipped into more long ball. i think we have had a problem with players not being mentally brave and getting on the ball and playing at times this season especially when things arnt going well, thats a thing i like about sinclair he always wants the ball and then wants to use it properly. i worry a bit that gosling and martin are a bit faint hearted and not desperate to get the ball and do damage to opponents.

We could be top by now instead of languishing outside the playoffs. . . and of course, this is the reality of our situation. If only a few of the chances that we have created had been converted, then we could have been goodness knows where by now. I'll leave you to work out where, but I guarantee that if anyone does we would all be suitably and dismally surprised. Compared to the other current high-flyers in the Conference our GD is very poor, we are currently on +4 compared to top-of-the table Barnet's +25, and when again compared to the other clubs above us we aren't too impressive either. +12, +13, +7 and +7 leaves you with a feeling that we are fighting with a self-inflicted problem. But in fairness to all concerned that problem has been with the club for quite some time now, and shows no signs of being resolved despite the efforts of successive managers. That's the way to do it.

Could that be also down to lack of confidence caused by our lack of goals? It must be pretty disheartening knowing our strikers are never going to score from one of their crosses?
