Wimbledon 2023: Roger Federer to be honoured with Centre Court ceremony..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1600F/production/_130272109_gettyimages-818051678.jpg Roger Federer's eighth and final Wimbledon men's singles title came in 2017 when he beat Marin Cilic in the finalEight-time champion Roger Federer's achievements at Wimbledon will be honoured by a special ceremony on Centre Court on Tuesday. Federer, who retired from tennis last year, will be celebrated before the start of play, at about 1.15pm. The Swiss, 41, won five successive Wimbledon titles between 2003 and 2007, adding further victories in 2009, 2012 and 2017. His final win saw him pass Pete Sampras' men's record of seven titles. Wimbledon chief executive Sally Bolton said 20-time Grand Slam singles champion Federer's ceremony had been arranged to "honour him as the man holding the most gentlemen's singles titles here". "We'll have a moment just to celebrate his achievements and to say thank you for all the memories," she added. Seven-time women's singles champion Serena Williams, who also retired last year, had been invited too but the pregnant 41-year-old was unable to travel. "We of course wish her lots of luck with the remainder of her pregnancy and we hope maybe we might see her next year," Bolton added.

Wimbledon 2023: Andy Murray in action on day two..By Michael Emons, BBC Sport at Wimbledon.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F5B7/production/_130230926_gettyimages-468915943.jpg It is 10 years since Andy Murray beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets to become the first Briton since Fred Perry in 1936 to win the Wimbledon men's singles titleBritain's Andy Murray says he remains "one of the best grass-court players in the world" as he prepares to begin his Wimbledon campaign on Tuesday. The 36-year-old, who won the tournament in 2013 and 2016, plays British wildcard Ryan Peniston, 27. It is 10 years since the first of Murray's two Wimbledon singles' titles - but the former world number one remains confident of his ability on grass. "I believe I'm one of the best grass-court players in the world, and I'm physically feeling really good," said Murray. "I prepared well, so there's no reason why I can't have a good tournament." He has not been beyond the third round at a Grand Slam since 2017, but chose to skip May's French Open and prioritise grass-court preparations. He won the Challenge Tour events at the Surbiton Trophy and the Nottingham Open, winning 10 matches in a row, but then lost in the first round at Queen's Club to Australian Alex de Minaur. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/C721/production/_130277905_murray.jpgThat defeat meant Murray, 40th in the rankings, could not get seeded and he may now face fifth-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in round two. "I feel good," said Murray. "I've obviously played lots of matches. Physically I've been feeling good. I'm ready to go. "I want to go out there and perform at a level that I'm happy with. I do feel like I'm in a really, really good position to do that. "I have the experience at this tournament. There's only one player in the draw that has more experience of playing here than me, which is Novak [Djokovic]. "I feel very comfortable in these surroundings. I love coming to play the tournament here. When I walk out on to Centre Court to play, obviously I'm very nervous but incredibly excited to get the chance to perform here again on one of, if not the, most special court in our sport." On world number 268 Peniston, who will be making his second Wimbledon appearance after reaching the second round in 2022, Murray added: "I know him pretty well. "We've practised together quite a lot. He obviously likes playing on the grass courts. He's had some good wins on the surface. Lefty, moves very well - I need to be ready for that one."

Andy Murray v Ryan Peniston - Live on the BBC NOW...With the rain hammering down outside..ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/E3AF/production/_130278285_murray_pa.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/3/14630058-d469-4119-aee5-65a3baed30fc.jpgAndy Murray and Ryan Peniston walk out to a lively reception on Centre Court, the crowd are pumped for this all-British showdown under the roof. 'I thought Murray news was a joke' Murray v PenistonHow would you react if you were drawn to play Andy Murray in the Wimbledon first round? Well, the news was almost too much for Ryan Peniston! The Briton discovered he was playing Murray while driving in south-west London on Friday morning, joking he almost "crashed" the car when he was told by his coach Mark Taylor. "I wasn't really sure if it was a joke at first, but then I knew Mark wouldn't do that. I was pretty pumped," Peniston said. "I know Andy pretty well. We've become friends and we've practised quite a lot together. "It's pretty cool that I've drawn him." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/ea961104-a428-477a-967b-0f6c19f3a0f7.jpgWhere were you when Andy Murray first won Wimbledon ?ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/06751fa9-b1d2-4a13-acd7-7f7bf26a3609.jpgJustine Sneath, 55 - Forest of Dean, Gloucester:"Watching it at home with my Dad - almost 2 years since my Mum had died. She was a massive tennis fan and would have loved to see him win. Felt very special." Ally Panton, 44 - Aberdeen:"I'd promised myself I'd be there if Andy ever won Wimbledon. A day I'll never forget. It was right up there with Aberdeen cup final wins in the late 80's/ early 90's against the Old Firm. Never in my lifetime did I think that someone who grew up 25 minutes from me would win Wimbledon. After it at a book signing in London I said to Andy that I was lucky enough to be there. In true humble fashion from him, he replied he felt lucky to be there." James, 50 - Manchester:"I watched the final in a bar in Vienna - stopped for lunch and stayed for the final two sets. The music at the bar was pretty eclectic - I can recall following the final set while The Proclaimers' 'Sunshine on Leith' was playing. Seems quite apt in retrospect!" ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/53892c0e-4f24-465f-bdc8-f318855a07c0.jpg ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/dfc168f5-d0f8-4203-b269-508b9d4a047b.jpg

Wimbledon 2023: Eight-time champion Roger Federer honoured in Centre Court ceremony..By Jess Anderson, BBC Sport at Wimbledon.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E7DE/production/_130285395_gettyimages-1513859409-1.jpg Federer was joined in the Royal Box by his wife, Mirka, (right) along with his parents, his coach and agent and the Princess of Wales (left)Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer took the acclaim of an adoring Centre Court crowd in a special ceremony on day two to mark his achievements at the tournament. The 20-time Grand Slam champion received a long ovation as he descended the steps of the Royal Box, where he was invited as a special guest to watch Tuesday's action. Federer was joined by his wife and family, along with the Princess of Wales, patron of the All England Tennis Club. The Swiss, 41, won five successive Wimbledon titles between 2003 and 2007, adding further victories in 2009, 2012 and 2017, and it is the first time he has returned to the venue since retiring last year. His final win saw him pass Pete Sampras' men's record of seven titles. Those with a ticket for Centre Court were treated to a video montage on the big screen which showed Federer through the years - from his first Wimbledon title win in 2003 to his last in 2017. Federer then received a guard of honour in the Royal Box, smiling and waving to the crowd as they applauded and cheered one of the greatest players of all time. With 103 ATP titles to his name and having spent 310 weeks as world number one, Federer is much-loved by the British crowds and the standing ovation lasted several minutes. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/248E/production/_130285390_gettyimages-1513862155.jpgThe 15,000 or so expectant fans may have been disappointed Federer did not speak, with play getting underway immediately after the announcer thanked Federer for the memories he has provided Wimbledon fans over the years. Federer was one of several former champions honoured at last year's tournament in a ceremony honouring 100 years of Centre Court. Federer then took his seat next to the Princess of Wales where he will spend the day watching the action on Centre Court, beginning with Elena Rybakina opening her title defence against American Shelby Rogers. Seven-time women's singles champion Serena Williams, who also retired last year, had also been invited but the pregnant 41-year-old was unable to travel. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/6ec942fc-88ec-4036-ba2a-d4a02b7ea52c.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/3A14/production/_130286841_gettyimages-1514176214.jpgVarious quotes about the early action in the 1st set...There's a real buzz around the arena. Or is that the rain on the roof... I think these early moments are key for Peniston to try and establish himself, you want to hold your serve just to settle the nerves. You can hear the rain falling once again on the roof, that is not a good sign at all. If you're on Centre or Court One then you've got the best of the draw. Ryan Peniston might be stepping onto the Centre Court grass today for the first time, but it won't be his first experience of being inside the iconic stadium. The 27-year-old remembers bagging tickets there in 2015, watching Grigor Dimitrov take on David Goffin, as well as a memorable match between Serena Williams and Heather Watson. "That was an epic," he remembers about Watson pushing the top seed before falling in three sets. "I was there and screaming on the side." Peniston, ranked 268th in the world, might be screaming again if he manages to cause a huge upset against Murray... You have to applaud the positivity from Ryan Peniston on Centre Court. Like over on Court One, you can hear the rain belting down onto the Centre Court roof. Sounds like we're in a spa, geothermal mineral springs providing a soothing ambiance. Just need some Ibiza chillout classics. Or in the Barnsley Metrodome when you're near the log flumes. I think Murray is making a tactical mistake with going to the Peniston backhand. Murray's a little nervous, a lot is expected of him this week. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/59087294-9880-4b5d-9859-4f45f175ac09.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/e738de72-8fe0-4fbb-96d1-1ee87c1c6c9a.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/2c2040c0-a71d-468e-b60e-acd2b887a59b.jpg

Get Involved - Where were you when Andy Murray first won Wimbledon ?
ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/b6be7a83-1d83-4cd4-82fc-fe6da7a415ba.jpg
Satvik Walia, 27 – London:"I was lucky enough to be a Wimbledon Ball Boy and was on court standing behind him when he served it out. Our whole team came off centre court that day understanding the magnitude of what we just witnessed - what a moment!" Emma Rix, 51 - Ipswich:"My wife & I were getting married and her family had flown in from South Africa. My family are Scottish & I’m a massive tennis & Andy Murray fan. So of course we were glued to the tv screaming & finally crying whilst my new South African family looked on totally bemused! The best thing for me is that I get to celebrate 10 years of marriage & 10 years since that amazing day & they will forever be linked! Ironically I was with my in-laws again in South Africa 2016 watching on my phone in the “bush” when Andy won his second Wimbledon. Clearly they are a good luck charm!" Rita Scowen, 72 – West Sussex:"At home like hundreds of thousands of others glued to the TV. I cried so much for Andy, how he never buckled under the intense pressure that was put on his shoulders year after year, he is for me the greatest sportsman we have ever had. I really hope that his achievements will be recognised in a permanent way so his legacy will always be there for all to see and perhaps emulated by youngsters to follow in the coming years." AnonI watched both the 2012 and 2013 murray finals on a big outdoor screen in the centre of Hammersmith. In 2012 it had started raining before the end, those who had stayed were in tears when he lost. In 2013 the sun was shining, we had a picnic, there was a massive, happy crowd that went wild at every point. The only downside was that it was a baking hot day and all the surrounding shops had ran out of water meaning I ended up with some coconut drink that tasted like it might have been wrung out from Murray's sweaty cap!

Karys Paterson, 60 - Findochty:"Myself, my Dad and my two sisters watched it outside in my sister’s garden in the sunshine. It was the day before our Mum’s funeral and we desperately wanted Andy to win for my Mum who was a massive tennis fan. My Mum was born in 1936 when Fred Perry won and died the year Britain had their next Wimbledon champion. My Mum Margaret would have been cheering the loudest." Derek, 39 – Melbourne, Australia:"I was on a flight to London from Dubai. I’d been unexpectedly bumped up to first class so it was already a very lucky day. I asked the air hostess if the captain could get the Wimbledon final score. A few minutes later the captain announced to the whole plane that Britain had its first men’s champion in 77 years. There was a cheer on the plane and I had a glass of champagne to celebrate." David, 30 - Suffolk:"During my study abroad year in Munich, sitting in a tiny flat with two Americans and a Finn. They couldn't quite understand the emotion and occasion at first, but were fully invested by the end cheering and shouting 'Let's go Andy'."

Game, set and match - Andy Murray 6-3 6-0 6-1 PenistonAndy Murray advances to the second round at Wimbledon, the crowd rising to their feet to applaud both players at the end of this all-British battle. Ryan Peniston can't help but leave the court with a huge grin on his face as he's cheered off the grass. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/cf6e9710-20c8-4126-b848-4c098a1d595d.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/e8d1ebd8-f24f-4fbb-aaef-75bce3b02b7c.jpg'This match will set Peniston up for the future'Tim Henman, Former British number one on BBC TV It's an unbelievable opportunity to play in this tournament, with the ranking points it brings, and also the prize money too. Even know it looks like Ryan Peniston will come up slightly short, he will have more money to invest in his career going forward. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/ac9c909a-1a87-4c38-b647-d5bd5a77ee0b.jpgHere's what Andy Murray had to say after his win over Ryan Peniston:"It's amazing to be back here playing on Centre Court. Started off I was quite nervous at the beginning and I wanted to play well but once I got the break in that first set I think I played some good stuff. There were good signs there. "It's been a long time since I've felt physically this good coming into Wimbledon. The last few years have been challenging. I'm hoping I'm fit and ready for a good run." On The Princess of Wales and Roger Federer being in attendance at his match:"I mean, it was amazing to have some royalty here and some tennis royalty as well. It's amazing to have Roger here supporting the event. "The last time I was on this court and he was watching it, it was the Olympics and he was sat in Stan Wawrinka's box supporting against me. [Roger,] I hope you are doing well." Federer was then asked whether he approved of the performance on show at Centre Court today, to which he nodded, prompting laughter from the crowd. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/d3e715c7-f658-4fbe-8764-1fd56d6a96bd.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/4/3a83d55a-7612-474f-8bc6-2061088bcd75.jpg

Wimbledon will be playing catch-up on Wednesday after rain delays saw only eight matches completed on Tuesday..By Michael Emons, BBC Sport at Wimbledon.

Burrage delight at first Wimbledon win after nearly quitting tennisBurrage, 24, reached her first WTA Tour final last month, losing to fellow Briton Katie Boulter in the Nottingham Open final, and gained her first ever main draw win at Wimbledon on Monday with a 6-1 6-3 success over American Caty McNally. "I'm just very happy to get my first Wimbledon win," said Burrage, who nearly quit tennis after injuries but is now on the verge of breaking into the top 100 in the world for the first time. "It was actually a lot of relief. It took me a few match points to get over the line. I really enjoyed every moment of it, and hopefully can take that into the next match. "Daria is a great player. She made the final last week in Eastbourne [losing to Madison Keys] so it's going to be a very tough match. "But I'll go out there, give my all, fight like I always do, and see what happens." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13A4A/production/_130285408_janniksinner.png

Wimbledon 2023: Andy Murray watched by Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe at All England Club..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14DF0/production/_130288458_gettyimages-1513977651.jpg Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe sat behind the Princess of Wales and Roger Federer during Andy Murray's first-round winAndy Murray said it was "brilliant" to be watched at Wimbledon by Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who last year revealed how watching his 2016 title win had given her rare joy in prison. Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a British-Iranian national, spent six years in an Iranian jail on spying charges - which she denied - and was released last year. "I wanted to invite her to come along and watch the tennis in totally different circumstances," Murray said. "I'm glad she could make it." Former world number one Murray, 36, helped arrange for Zaghari-Ratcliffe to attend the All England Club on Tuesday. She sat in the Royal Box behind the Princess of Wales and eight-time men's champion Roger Federer during Murray's first-round win over fellow Briton Ryan Peniston. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/1180D/production/_128139617_p0drvwfm.jpgNine months after her release - which came following a sustained campaign - she met Murray and told him she had been "ecstatic" to see him win his second Wimbledon title. Zaghari-Ratcliffe had been in solitary confinement for months, separated from her husband and young daughter, when in 2016 her Iranian jailers granted her access to a TV with two channels - one showing Iranian soaps, the other Wimbledon tennis matches. She revealed the story in a Radio 4 Today programme she was guest editing last year. "It felt like a connection, it felt like escape," said Zaghari-Ratcliffe. "I was close to home all of a sudden." More than six years later, she shared the personal significance of that match with Murray and finally managed to see him play at Wimbledon in real life. "It was brilliant she was able to come along," said Murray, who said he saw her again after the match. "It was very emotional talking to her and hearing her story. It was her first time here and I'm glad she could make it."
