A new Bristol Rovers,still in the early stages of development but one that I can really get behind because; although lacking a bit of quality here and there; I can relate to them and the Manager. Guts,determination,a willingness to fight for every ball, a "we will not be beat" mindset, confidence in their ability to do the task set by the Manager and you just get the feeling that the eleven players on the pitch (or 10 as was most of last nights game) know exactly what the game means to us supporters and have set about restoring the "Pride in the shirt". A team that in adversity will stand up and be counted rather than feel sorry for themselves and pretty well give up, which it did not that long ago in football terms and has been evident for years in many of the teams who have represented us.
Mildenhall 7 Can only rate on what I saw BEFORE the sending off. Not 100% sure on the rights or wrongs of the sending off decision but it looked like he just got to the ball first and made contact with the ball. Whether or not that was the case is open to debate but what is certain is it WAS a definite attempt to win the ball and in my opinion the worst decision in that case should be a bit of commonsense and a booking. Unfortunately these days referees cannot or will not use that discretion and it is either a red or nothing. Anyway a red it was but it came after Mildy had made what I could only describe as a wonder save to keep us level and looking on top of his game..
Lockyer 7 This man plays with a calmness and efficiency that belies his years.Steady in his defending
and his passing is improving
Trotman 9 For me the Man of the match or should I say Man Mountain of the match! Committed and strong in all he does and so commanding in the air that even an aerial assault throughout the game could not bring him down.
Parkes 6 A terrible mistake for the goal and unfortunately he makes these silly errors too often but other than a couple of errors played well.
Brown 7.5 A good game both defensively and going forward which in the circumstances took some doing.Put in a couple of good quality crosses.
Gosling 7 Unfortunately he had to take one for the team and was subbed when looking dangerous. He is an intelligent player and is starting to look a good aquisition.
Mansell 8 Good controlled display and a great captain. Very unlucky with an early header
and leads by example
Clarke 6.5 Gives the ball away too often but what a goal!! Has to be a candidate for goal of the season and had it taken place in a Premiership match the commentators would have been raving. Both his bookings were unnecessary but the first was probably an incorrect decision and only worthy of a talking too and the second was just another case of a referee who at best was abysmal and with just 60 seconds to go just needed a bit of common sense.
Sinclair 8 Worked his socks off good work on right in second half
and really defines what this team is about. Work rate, commitment and a willingness to run all night. Also shows good passing ability and seems to be getting better with each performance.
Taylor 6.5 I am becoming a bit fed up of saying "Hardworking" because what I and we need from Matty is goals. To me he spends too much time getting into positions away from goal or being offside Defin itely cannot fault his effort and commitment but we badly need a goalscorer if we are to achieve our target which in this league and our current form should be the title.
Harrison 8 Ellis gave everything and in my opinion his great improvement is down to playing for the team and not playing just for Ellis. Some great moments and he was a handfull all night for the opposition but was naturally in the circumstances tiring. I would be inclined to start him saturday up front with Cunnington as it could be an interesting partnership.
Subs: Puddy 8 From my viewpoint it was hard to say if the goal should have been stopped but dealt with everything confidently but worries me because of his lack of height. Very competent performance in the circumstances.
Cunnington 7 Made a big difference in the second half and gave the opposition problems from the minute he arrived on the scene. IMO he is a player we must go all out to sign permanently and all we need to do is find him a partner who can score regularly.
Martin 5 Can't really rate him as only on a short time and didn't really get involved in anything.
DC 8 Another example of his skills as a tactician and a Manager who now seems to be coming into his own as does Marcus Stewart and Steve Yates. We could have a great Management team here if the current trend can be continued. It seemed an impossible task but they are bringing pride to the club and have given us back OUR team. Let's hope this continues for a long time!
Ref 0 Sorry but just cannot think of anything positive to say about either the referee or the linesman on our side. Ruined a good game and couldn't get straightforward decisions right let alone more difficult Match defining ones. Seems like we will have to put up with this kind of officiallating
in this league
Eastleigh 7 A good side within the constraints of how they play which is really an aerial bombing from start to finish.
Well thats it folks for those who were not lucky enough to go!! I still think if we are to progress we need a midfielder who can carry the ball forward and control the pace and dominate the game and a goalscoring forward to compliment Cunnington and maybe another right winger. Obviously we have Monkhouse and Balanta to come back in and maybe eventually White can prove his worth.
