I have read some clap-trap on this Forum in the last 24 hours, but stop venting spleen and watch this You might appreciate why some of us are (even now - after our first away win in the Conference) still a tad frustrated with our current plight. 40 years ago today, and we followed this week with a game gainst Sheff Weds and a trip to Man United. All my love and feelings of nostalgia The Glory-hunter xx BTW DC was a merely twinkle in his father's eye when this took place, so keep him out of this FFS and just enjoy. Don't even blame Graydon - praise Bater instead.

The frustration of being in the conference is totally understandable, but DC being the punch bag is wrong. Great video.

Watched it. Interesting how many indirect free kicks in the box were given. How Eadie would throw the ball out at every opportunity - why can't Mildenhall do this ? we were certainly a tight unit in those days. Stephens was the chief creator and Warboys an absolute warhorse.
In the crowd you could still see kids waving RATTLES !!! I did have vague memories of seeing them at games - more the noise ! I first went to Eastville as a kid in Feb 73.

Seems another lifetime ago now. Good old Roger Malone too, those truly were the days!

Just read this thread and although it's lovely it does smell musty like an old folks home. Which war was this game played during?

Ah yes but if memory serves the two of us have a mutual appreciation for Lee Archer, which will seem almost as distant to the youngsters on here today as this seems to be to us.....To support Vaughan's point - when I used to talk about 'Tilly's heros' and wax lyrical about the likes of Billy Clarke, Worrell Stirling and Andy Gurney the older generation used to shake their heads and say it was said that we didn't have 'real' memories (it could be quite patronising) but what will be the equivalent for this generation (say you'd been a Rovers fan for 5 years....)? Nostalgia is what fandom's built on, it's why you go through the bad times, - I think we're just jealous that these guys nostalgia is better than ours. But I'm worried that the recent generation won't have any nostalgia and the ties will not be as strong; it'll be more like 'remember when we spent 5 years of our youth following that crap football team around the country - bit of a laugh but what we were we thinking......'.

I'm looking forward to watching this when I get home form work, as far as present day hero's it seems all we can do at present is refer back to Lambert, hopefully another "hero" will come along in the next year or two. If not you do have to wonder how many fans will care about having hero's if we become just an average mid table Conference side.

This video is worth watching just on a pure footballing level. Roger's commentary and HTV editing are also priceless.
Irishrover raises some great points. We could attach ourselves to players in those days, because they actually stayed with the club for more than 12 months. They felt attached to the club and us to them - an important human dynanmic in building support.
I was just as excited by getting to the FA Cup quarter-finals in 2008 - the only time in my life-time. My Dad had always waxed lyrical about the Newcastle game in 51, so to match progress was fantastic.
Sometimes you have to hold up a looking-glass to the past as a means of generating some hope for the future....if nothing else.

The thing with successful teams is a bond is built between the supporters and players. It does seem as if the players now are at least trying to create a bit of a bond. The scenes at the final whistle with players diving into the away end will help this.

Great memories. I was probably at that game, although I can't remember it. Things that stand out :- The amount of blokes in the crowd wearing ties! People sat on benches behind the goals. The flowerbeds. Advert on the South Stand, "Make Coal Your Goal". Didn't they know about Climate Change :-) Look at the corners. There was no shirt pulling, no grappling.

I was there too, not long after we did have a fire in the south stand. I wonder if it was Roger's initial comment at the start gave some loser an idea?

Knowing your a cricket fan i was having similar thoughts on the way home but this related to Ashes tickets going on general sale (as the demand was great enough in the ballot) at Cardiff which I concluded was due to the fact that at present there aren't any test 'superstars' ie the likes of Warne, Gilchrist, McGrath, Flintoff, Peterson etc playing at the moment.
