We were delighted to pick up three points against Wrexham on Tuesday after the extremely disappointing showing at Braintree on Saturday. The team performances so far have not been consistent and the manager is doing his utmost to improve things and build on the patches of good form we have shown this season. It is vital we increase our attacking threat and all efforts are being aimed towards scoring more goals because goals win matches and that is what fans come to see.
To create the type of club we all desire there is a need for more footballing expertise to work alongside the talented staff we already have. Therefore I am excited to tell you that former England International Perry Stevenson has agreed to join us as Technical Director. Perry has a wealth of experience and maintains superb contacts at all levels of the game so he is perfectly equipped to mastermind the football structure we need to develop at Bristol Rovers. We have a Q & A session planned for October 2nd at the Mem and this will be your chance to meet Perry, learn of his plans and put forward your own ideas for improving our football club.
At the end of last season the club was persuaded to threaten legal action against Wybother Wanderers for alleged infringements of football league rules. Having looked through the relevant paperwork and considered what is in the best interests of the club I have decided to drop the proposed action and have written to the football league and Wybother Wanderers FC to advise them accordingly.
We have also looked at the situation with J Salisbury plc and, having taken wide ranging advice on this matter, decided to try to reach a compromise. We have suggested an independent arbitrator be appointed to rule on the most sensible resolution of outstanding matters with J Salisbury plc and their advisors are currently considering this proposal.
With the OWE project now cancelled we must look to modernise the Memorial Stadium in order to make match days more enjoyable for our fans and to optimize earnings potential from the facilities we can put in place here. Therefore we are in discussion with various parties who are interested in joining with us to develop the stadium into a first class sporting venue of which we can all be proud. There are many options to consider through which we can incorporate features which will not only enhance the football related business but also provide much needed community assets that will be available for use seven days per week. We will be holding quarterly presentations at the Mem to update you on progress with stadium developments and the first session will be held on Thursday October 23rd.
All of us have been dismayed to read press reports of court proceedings following disturbances at the ground after our relegation last May. We also received bad publicity this week in the wake of incidents at Braintree last Saturday. The good name of Bristol Rovers has been tarnished and we must now work together to restore it. We have a wonderful legacy to live up to because Bristol Rovers has always been known as a club where good sportsmanship prevailed so let’s show the football world that we really mean business.
I don’t need to remind anyone of what happened at Lincoln City on May 17th 2007 and I am sure we are all hoping for a repeat performance on Saturday. But there was more to that night than just the score line because it was a night when thousands of Rovers fans, led by Denis Dunford and Ron Craig, were totally united in celebration of the prospect of a visit to Wembley and a realization that there was light at the end of a long tunnel. I cannot guarantee you today that there is light at the end of this dark tunnel we find ourselves in but I can promise you that I am searching for it and I need your help to find it.
We must now work as a united team to achieve the goal we all desire so let us forget about ice bucket challenges and go forward together.
Best Wishes
