the misconception of Mahler being a "miserable sod" blown away at times like this and among a lot of his other creations absolutely. The end of Mahler 2 “resurrection” is truly glorious. In fact, in the right hands, such as Rattle or Jurowski, the whole symphony stately introduces, skewers, repeats, bangs, surprises, meditates, expands, waltzes and builds to that hair tingling climax. ain't that what sex is meant to be like............ ......

absolutely. The end of Mahler 2 “resurrection” is truly glorious. In fact, in the right hands, such as Rattle or Jurowski, the whole symphony stately introduces, skewers, repeats, bangs, surprises, meditates, expands, waltzes and builds to that hair tingling climax. ain't that what sex is meant to be like............ ...... oh behave... I agree Mahlers large orchestral works can often be inconsistent, in places very involving, and occasionally just not fitting together so well. His most sustained and complete work I would call his 9th - consistency replacing eclecticism for a transcendental experience. However Mahlers most inspired segment of music has to be conclusion of the sixth. Not to overlook it is also part of his most romantic symphony, torment gets a megawatt overload and his usual romantic inspiration gets proper twisted to summon a sort of animus from the orchestra, often to terrifying effect. someone mentioned sex? Perhaps the way to understand this movement, you are very much in love with someone, that is certainly clear in the score, but as you are isolated up in your cabin grafting away, it is on your mind the person you love is at play with someone else, that person sniffing round is someone you don’t like, as is often the way of things. Art is never chaste. It ought to be forbidden to ignorant innocents, never allowed into contact with those not sufficiently prepared. Yes, art is dangerous. Where it is chaste, it is not art.
Pablo PicassoBernstein does it all justice here. Hold on to your hats.

Christmas tracks all the way from here. Trying not to be too "predictable". Here's a classic, my memory jogged listening to BBC4. For some reason never played this time of year (it was a Christmas hit). I make no apologies for Bucks Fizz. The Land of Make believe.

Again - left field. It scans so badly. So bad it's good. A mash-up of the Wombles and Wizzard. It just doesn't work.

You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes, well, you might find
You get what you need...

OK - not exactly very left field... Jonah Lewie: "Stop the Cavalry". Apparently filmed on Hampstead Heath and genuinely very cold...

For Karen Carpenter's vocals. Richness in part put down to a very quiet singing voice, not a lot of power - which needed a lot of amplification.

Damn! I was saving this one for Christmas Eve. I'm not sure if I can find anything to top that...

As Cosima lay asleep that Christmas Morning, the musicians crept onto and positioned upon the stairs, so that she would be awoken by the world premier of a composition dedicated to her.
