How can Jefferson Starship be so sh*t? "We built this city on rock n' roll". Did you, did you really? Well that's patently absolute nonsense. didn’t you like it? All a bit dodgy Dodgson? I’d better play safe then. Rock n roll. 🎸 Jefferson Airplane (White Rabbit) - genius. Stands the test of time, and rightly so. Jefferson Starship (We built this City on rock 'n roll) - awful. Just awful. Words fail me. So I googled it and found that I am not alone. "The magazine Blender's ranking of the song as the worst song ever was in conjunction with a VH1 Special of The 50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs...Ever". "In 2011, a Rolling Stone magazine online readers poll named "We Built This City" as the worst song of the 1980s. The song's winning margin was so large that the magazine reported it "could be the biggest blow-out victory in the history of the Rolling Stone Readers Poll". In August 2016, GQ magazine declared this song as the worst of all time, referring to it as "the most detested song in human history".[12] The article covered Bernie Taupin's role in writing an early version of the song, the backlash against a video that no one liked and Grace Slick's inconsistent statements about whether she liked it or not. I'll get round to the other stuff later - keep posting!

Okay, if you are going to comment, here is an Interesting point, probably on how music press is written as well as critical reviews?
When the first album proper was released they were reviewed on basis they were an obscure country band from Canada. So the label is country. However a year later as they had achieved commercial success with this work, their sound now described as everyone’s favourite international indie rockers. Aren’t people allowed to admit enjoying obscure country music?

And so now to one of the most original concept albums, the concept being love for Anne Frank, as told by a narrator haunted not just by love, but visions of her vertebrae worn as jewellery by those who snuffed out her life.

Aren’t people allowed to admit enjoying obscure country music? I'm a big Arcade Fire fan... the Suburbs gets played a lot on the M4 travelling back to Winterbourne en route to Rovers games. Never heard any 'country' in their music (but I don't know the first album). And I'm also a big fan of country music. Not sure about 'obscure' though.

Yeah that’s pretty much the point, I read the review, I bought the album, I couldn’t hear much country, but I liked what I heard. Maybe if all you hear is kettles?
My suspicion here is music press written on what trend allows you to admit to liking when catching up in a trendy wine bar. when they are not famous and unknown they are filed in the country section, soon as they became widely popular and perceived as cool they are indie rockers. Yet at the same time the much loved list of the year and much hated list become virtually the same acts and tracks. Something immature about the music press and critics, as a cautionary warning.
Witness as example never achieved Arcade Fire fame, so no, this is not rock, merely progressed in the filing from country to alternative country the more they sold.

Good shout. It would appear this sort of 'energy'is somewhat missing in contemporary music. For about 35 years anyway.

Yet remain the albums with their best tracks on them. having said that, I’m posting from the earlier EP

Simon Cowell's favourite song apparently. I absolutely love this. The subject, the clever lyrics, the big band sound, understated yet bombastic. Love the list of ladies at the end. Darin has the best of the Rat Pack and the charm of Buble. This is an iconic song that I will still play in 500 years time.

Rat Pack... I give you Sammy Davis Jnr... Wonderful song and performance. Love Frank and Dean too He absolutely nails this. Decades of live performances and it's just perfection. Up there with Hendrix at Monterrey and Queen at Live Aid. IMHO of course. I find commenting on music less stressful than commenting on Bristol Rovers FC.
