Can you really class Gloucestershire Cup winner as an achievement seeing only two clubs played for it likewise charity shield runner up in a two team comp? Try to take the post in context, if you're going to quote one part then at least comment on the rest. Ridicule is not the way forward, in my opinion. As for what's he done since 1988? Well ask yourself, what have any of our recent managers done in the whole of their careers? But Bobby Gould has a proven track record at BRFC, hasn't he? I realise completely that as a club we're up to our necks in it, but try to be a little receptive to different thoughts, and at least attempt optimism. Out of the interchange of ideas, something positive may emerge, try it . . . you never know, do you? By the way I totally respect the fact that you don't appear to agree, it was a long shot, but you never know, do you?

Sorry mate it`s just very hard to be optimistic about Bristol Rovers. Well, unfortunately that's something that we can both agree on, but we have to keep trying, don't we?

Certainly when choosing managers, they need to speak to a football person. Clarke - appointed by Ward Ward - appointed because he was a decent former manager to deflect criticism McGhee - seemed a decent appointment in fairness Buckle - appointed by Higgs only despite warnings Penney - appointed by Higgs That said, what ex player or coach of the club would answer the phone to Higgs or Boycie? What we need is a DoF. Though the last proper one we had was at fault for everything according to our dear leader... Rovers have never had a Director of Football. The title has been used twice- first time to avoid the fact that Paul Trollope was the Coach, and Lennie Lawrence was the Manager, and second time to pretend that John Ward was on anything other then Gardening Leave. The idea that we should appoint one now is quite funny. There is bu**er all football at Rovers to be directed. Under Sir Nick the 1st Team has become nothing more than a franchise contracted to a property consortium.

Football advisor?? That's the manager!! In an ideal world I would agree with you, but it's not ideal for us at the moment, is it? Clearly the present manager is by most standards struggling, so what is so wrong with giving him a helping hand? In life we all struggle from time to time, especially when we're young and a little inexperienced, so to bring in an older head (think Lennie Lawrence here, if it will help) would seem sensible. Such an appointment could well benefit not only the manager, but give a lift to the whole club if the right person were appointed.

Lennie did that rather well despite Higgs' comments. Agree that with Ward it was just a title, and Gerry was DoF and manager on his return in 2001 - figure that out!

The problem with having just one person who makes all the footballing decisions is, what if he's wrong? Nobody's perfect, we all make mistakes. Seems a very high risk way of going about things.
I often wonder why there isn't more footballing consultants about, with a number of football club clients. Great way for experience managers to capitalise their knowledge or to semi-retire, and for clubs who can't afford experienced managers to get expert input for less money. Happens with the management of small businesses all the time - the company I work for, for example, has a board of owner/directors and an independent chairman who has been around the industry for a million years, who provides knowledge, strategic insight and contacts.
