Fear

I don't know about anyone else, but i'm getting sick and tired hearing about the fear factor. I thought Clarke was going to sign players with a bit of backbone that could handle playing for a club with expectations? Now all we hear in every other interview is "fear" and players playing with a "fear factor". Utterly pathetic.
Last Season - "I'll be picking a team that shows me this week who wants to wear the shirt on Saturday and overcome the fear and expectations."
Altrincham - "Mental fear is certainly one of the reasons and it only gets worse when you put in performances like that."
Braintree - "Is it a fear factor? I don't know. Teams have come back from 2-0 down before and I want to see my team show a bit more belief. I don’t like to use the phrase, but it seemed to me like we chucked in the towel and that is not acceptable. The fans have a right to be angry because for the last 30 minutes we looked absolutely clueless.”
Perhaps mentioning "fear", "big club", "big budget" and "expectations" every other interview is contributing to the so-called "fear factor"?

Yep I heard that yesterday. The bloke is a joke, it is Braintree not the bloody Nou Camp. If these players can't handle playing in front of a few thousand fans then f**k off to the Downs League.

At our lunch-time drink to-day in Stafford ,the Stoke ,Vale and Wolves fans asked me,'What's gone wrong at your club?'I really couldn't give a definitive answer.I am just mystifed as to how our club where I once watched ;Bradford ,Biggs,Lambert,Roberts and Co' can be in this dreadful state seemingly without hope, ambition ,leadership or direction.

I can't remember who it was that said after a recent defeat something like 'We (the team) wish there was a game tomorrow so that we can start setting things to rights', but it was Lee Mansell who said after the Altrincham game 'We turned up and thought that because we were Bristol Rovers we were going to turn them over.' They certainly don't sound like a particularly fearful team, at least until Clarke opens his mouth and inflates the fear factor because he can't come up with another excuse, and even he preceded it with 'I don't know' this week. Until he does know (which it's his job to!) and gets to the root of the real problem, he is contributing to (and quite possibly even creating) the fear factor in excusing his own shortcomings by focusing on any doubt in the minds of the players and enlarging it to fill the view-finder. He only ever tells us that the team tremble with anxiety at the thought of confronting Altrincham or Braintree when his own abilities come anywhere near being questioned - the rest of the time it's just 'Back the lads' - but if the last thirty minutes of yesterday's game are anything to go by then he's in danger of creating self-fulfilling prophecy. If I'm wrong about that and the team really are quaking with dread at the thought of taking on part-time teams then he ought to be asking hard questions of the bloke who picked them. The responsibility still lies with the man he sees in his mirror.

There is a fear factor, a fear of putting the ball in the net, its the disease from last season, a virus which has spread into the souls of todays squad that must be what DC is on about, I understand now its so clear surely you all can see that but dont worry its being treated, and the word from the camp is ....goals will come I feel so assured now.

No it's not just you. I don't know how the guy can expect his team to have a backbone when he cries and is 'visibly shaken' after a defeat. The guy needs to grow a pair, man up and lead by example. Regardless of what anyone thinks or wants, the guy is here to stay (for now). We are reliant on him sorting this team out (scary thought). If anything, he is putting the fear into his team with talk like this. Self-fulfilling prophecy and all that. Oh and he needs to stop filling a whole article/interview (yes whole article, read them) with meaningless cliches that say nothing.

If there is a fear factor when playing away from home it seems harsh lying the blame totally at DC's door as these issues have been ongoing since the PT era. As far as DC dropping the culprits given his threadbare squad he can hardly make wholesale changes.

When people like Keith Brookman state live on radio Bristol "Sorry but this is simply not good enough, I am deeply disappointed" [[Ref Braintree] You know things are bad.
