Why do some bang on about GC? In my opinion was very unlikely he would take us up, and if he did with that squad and tactics would we have stayed up. Again very unlikely.
What is his record since Rovers and where is he working now?

You need to have a look at his stats to answer that question. Achieved over two seasons not one. Then look at the squad he had at his disposal. Mostly a squad he inherited bar JCH. Then look at what Benny achieved with the same squad. Coughlan was squeezing every last drop of juice from it and playing the hand he was given rather than the one he wished he had. Whether it would have been enough to stay the course, and if it had, to survive at the next level above who knows? Saying it wouldn’t is just opinion.
It doesn’t matter what he achieved before or after us. He was a good fit for us at that time but we didn’t appreciate that and threw it away for Wael’s Benny vanity project

That GC team was never going to finish in the top six though, was it? I've always thought that the drop off that occurred under Garner would also have occurred under GC.
I remember people used to come across from the GC games amazed that we had not lost, let alone won.
In the bottom two divisions, you can basically get promoted with good organisation. You don't need to spend large amounts of money - teams like Burton, S***tthorpe, and Southend have previously demonstrated this. Even Swansea didn't spend big money.
The Ward and Holloway play off teams also weren't assembled with big money. This is the first transfer window I can remember in which the manager has been given more money to spend than he raised through transfer fees.
I don't think we are going to see the best of Omochere, Hutchinson, Forde and Sotoriou this season. It is going to be a matter of bedding them in, and giving them consistent games. They are young players, and we are going to have to be patient.
Coughlan’s last game in charge was away at Ipswich - as complete an away performance as I can remember in 54+ years of watching us. That side included the likes of Menayese, Kilgour, Tyler Smith and Tom Nicholls, the latter two both getting a goal each. We’ll never know how far Coughlan might have taken that team as it appears (to me at least) he was undermined from within and chose to jump before being pushed. His win record with us though is unparalleled at least in my lifetime. That team with him at the helm knew how to grind results out - a bit like the Gerry Mk 1 team - even if they weren't necessarily the best players we have ever had. Winning ugly is absolutely fine in my book. They had a bit of a swagger and innate confidence about them which Benny destroyed from game 1 in charge onwards Agree we need to be patient with this team and manager. They are showing in short bursts what they are capable of. If they can do this more consistently and for longer spells in games then we may have one hell of a team on our hands David Williams - 1983-85 had a win rate % of 47.2 is above GC at 44.6, these two managers have the best % win rates in the history of BRFC.

Thanks BT - didn’t realise Williams’ record was as good as that. Remember the football as exciting and thought he was an intelligent and excellent manager. Was gutted when he moved on to Norwich (though could understand why) and would have loved him to have been given the chance to see if he could finish whst he started here after he gave up the Man U coaching role
My favourite midfielder to wear the quarters too. Would surely have been a top league great if he’d had a bit more pace
Edit - he managed us before play offs were a thing. I’m pretty sure he’d have got us promoted if they had been there in his time

The whole club needed time to readjust after the shameless Barton era. I am quite optimistic of our chances in a season’s time given we have a squad of talented young players on long contracts.
I can foresee Promise, Mola, Forde, Bilongo and Shaw excelling in the second half of the season. Be patient and it will come good.

Couldn't agree with you more, but sadly again yesterday no Rovers directors or guests attended the game. I feel sorry for Taylor, who puts the coat hanger between his shoulders when the team loses.

No idea. That appears to be our age old question though, doesn't it? I think GC spent a fraction to get us into a secure play off/automatic promotion spot in December 2019, so sometimes it's not just as easy as spending money. I see it we don't make enough use of our resources, coupled with too many underperforming players at their level of ability as contributing problems. Weirdly, GC appeared to be opposite, as an example. That GC team was never going to finish in the top six though, was it? I've always thought that the drop off that occurred under Garner would also have occurred under GC.
Totally disagree!

Depends if its spent wisely or not Chelsea for example, and I can’t imagine Wycombe and Mansfield have been splashing the cash. UTG Wonder what Oxford`s budget was last season, compared to ours. Around £5m for Oxford and about £4.5m for us.

Totally disagree! GC left us in 3rd. We were hard to break down, hard to beat, full of fighting team spirit and we had a constant goal threat in JCH nicking us wins 1-0. I think we would have ended up in the play offs and in with a good shout.

Some goods point made on this thread. “I see it we don't make enough use of our resources” But nothing really changes, we keep going around and around in circles accepting the lack of forethought or planning, and then wondering why we fail. It was easy to predict what would happen this season with a new team, no experienced business management in place and no proper communication from the club. If there is a strategy and it had been communicated to fans there would be no need for all the unpleasantness targeted at Matt Taylor and now Shaq Forde. Gasheads would understand what the club is trying to do, feel part of it and be patient. Wasn`t the club`s strategy in the summer, to spend decent money on bringing in new players, and then to rely on the manager that they appointed a year ago, to get the best out of them? It may not be working for whatever reason, but it seems a decent strategy to me.

At ninety minutes I heard ‘Taylor Out’ emanating from the Blackthorn which is just plain stupid.
They cannot be serious, who would sack their manager when the league and cup double is still on!
Exasperated…….
