At The Mem. He had a couple of memorable FA Cup years against us: - 1992 scored in the games at both Twerton Park and Anfield for Liverpool, as did his namesake Carl for us. - 1993 missed a penalty at Villa Park, but scored 2 at Twerton Park to knock us out. He should have seen sent off for an elbow at Twerton, for Liverpool, but it was missed by the referee and he instead received a retrospective 3-match ban as the TV cameras had picked up the incident. By coincidence, in light of the sad news this week, the elbow was on inflicted on Jocky. http://instagram.com/p/DBG5HjmoyiF

His story of when Cloughie tried to sign him for Forest is a classic. It would be even better if it was true...
As I recall, Dean's 'creative' story wasn't received enthusiastically by those close to Brian, and was openly questioned, and indeed challenged, by others.
We really need to start treating alcoholism as the illness that it is...Clough's decline was tragic, played out in public, and no laughing matter.
With people like Clough you always sense that there is an essential emptiness, with the persona only thinly concealing the fact that something isn't there, and never will be.
A player who for me never really fulfilled his potential, both at the club and international level. If things had 'clicked' at Liverpool, he could have achieved great things. Good at Aston Villa but then, for some inexplicable reason, moved to Istanbul, one of the most deeply unpleasant, unlikable and godforsaken places I have had the misfortune to visit.

I did'nt know DSs story on Cloughie trying to sign him for Forest had been questioned. It was. Google 'Dean Saunders and Brian Clough - a story that went viral but doesn't end there'. You should find a Guardian article by Daniel Taylor.
The incident was supposed to have occurred in 1991, the start of a two-year period that would culminate in Forest being relegated from the PL, with a clearly unwell and physically deteriorated Clough watching on from the sidelines.
