Match report by Phil McNulty, Chief football writer at Emirates Stadium
Arsenal secured their first win in the new Champions League format as they overcame Paris St-Germain at Emirates Stadium.
Mikel Arteta’s side followed an opening draw with Atalanta by taking control with two first-half goals from Kai Havertz’s header and a free-kick from Bukayo Saka that drifted in past PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
PSG had their moments, especially when Nuno Mendes and Joao Neves hit the woodwork either side of the break, but the platform for victory was established by a dominant first-half display from Arsenal.
Havertz put them ahead after 20 minutes when he beat Donnarumma to Leandro Trossard’s inviting cross to head home, before the keeper was deceived by Saka’s set-piece from near the touchline as he was unsighted in a packed penalty area.
PSG, stripped of the old superstars such as Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar, mounted periods of pressure after the break as Arsenal struggled to retain possession, but Arteta felt confident enough to give a debut to Mikel Merino, a £31m signing from Real Sociedad, on another satisfactory night for Arsenal.
Slovan Bratislava 0 Manchester City 4
Phil Foden scored and got an assist as Manchester City claimed a comfortable first Champions League win of the season at Slovan Bratislava.
The England midfielder has struggled to find the form that saw him named PFA Player of the Season last year, but he made the most of only his second start this term.
After Ilkay Gundogan had scored his first goal on his return to City with a deflected strike in the eighth minute, Foden opened his account for the campaign with a composed finish into the bottom corner seven minutes later.
City then hit the woodwork three times as they continued to dominate their hosts, before Erling Haaland grabbed his 11th of the season just before the hour mark, taking the ball past goalkeeper Dominik Takac to slot home.
Foden then cleverly flicked the ball through for substitute James McAtee to get his first City goal in the 74th minute.
Only heroics from Slovan stopper Takac denied City further goals, but the victory was their first in the revamped Champions League format after drawing at home to Inter Milan in their opening fixture.

Match report by Phil McNulty, Chief football writer at Villa ParkJhon Duran emerged from the bench in dramatic fashion once more to give Aston Villa a magnificent victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League at an exultant Villa Park. In a meeting surrounded by a rich sense of history as a repeat of the Villa's 1982 European Cup final victory over the German giants in Rotterdam, Duran ensured a replica of that scoreline with his fifth goal after coming on as substitute this season. Duran, on as a 70th-minute substitute for Ollie Watkins, took only nine minutes to make his mark when he caught Bayern’s veteran keeper Manuel Neuer out of position with a composed lofted finish. It was another triumph for Villa manager Unai Emery, this result continuing his side's impressive start to their Champions League campaign after a 3-0 victory against Young Boys in Switzerland in their opening game. Villa Park was awash with colour and noise before the kick-off as it played host to this competition for the first time in 41 years, welcoming Bayern striker Harry Kane and coach Vincent Kompany back to England. The stadium erupted when Pau Torres turned in a close-range finish after 22 minutes only for the video assistant referee to intervene and rule it out for offside. Chances were rare in a tight affair, but 20-year-old Duran was the talisman once more to send Villa Park wild before inspirational Villa keeper Emi Martinez produced a stunning save from Kane in injury time to keep Bayern at bay. Liverpool 2 (Mac Allister 11, Salah 75) Bologna 0

Match report by Michael Emons, BBC Sport journalist at AnfieldArne Slot's first home Champions League match as Liverpool boss ended in victory as goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah helped the Reds defeat battling Italian side Bologna at Anfield. Slot became the first man in Liverpool's distinguished history to win eight of his first nine games in charge, but his side had to survive some nervous moments in this hard-fought match. The hosts scored in the 12th minute when Mac Allister was able to convert from close range following Salah’s excellent low cross from the right side. Both sides had potential goals ruled out for offside – Thijs Dallinga for Bologna and Darwin Nunez for Liverpool - before the Italians, in their first ever Champions League campaign and only their second time in European football’s top competition, ended the first half well. Dan Ndoye hit the post and Bologna capitalised on an error from Trent Alexander-Arnold in his own penalty area, before Alisson saved to deny Kacper Urbanski. The visitors continued to create chances after the break, with Alisson saving well from Riccardo Orsolini and Urbanski firing over when well placed. But the hosts sealed the win in style with Salah's 49th Champions League goal, cutting in on to his left foot and curling a wonderful shot into the top corner to ensure Slot, who replaced Jurgen Klopp in the summer, continued his fine start to his tenure.

Gabriel Martinelli’s effort in the 29th minute bounced off the post and hit the Shakhtar keeper in the back before trickling over the line as the home side's dominance paid off. The Gunners started the match brightly and Riccardo Calafiori should have opened the scoring, before Gabriel Jesus had a good chance after the goal but was denied by Riznyk. Shakhtar were well organised and provided a threat on the counter-attack with winger Eguinaldo keeping the Arsenal backline on their toes. Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side are already struggling with injury problems and were without captain Martin Odegaard and key man Bukayo Saka. The Spanish boss may have more problems to think about as Ben White did not come out for the second half, although he was on a yellow card, and Calafiori was withdrawn after receiving treatment following an awkward slip. Leandro Trossard had the chance to score a second for Arsenal from the penalty spot late on, after the video assistant referee deemed Valerii Bondar's arm to be in an unnatural position, but his effort was poor and saved by the impressive Riznyk. Pedrinho almost snatched a draw for the away side in stoppage time but his effort from the edge of the box was excellently saved by David Raya. Aston Villa 2 (McGinn 55, Duran 64) Bologna 0

Match report by Neil Johnston, BBC Sport journalistAston Villa's magical Champions League journey continued as they marked Unai Emery's second anniversary in charge with victory on another European night to remember. Captain John McGinn, Villa's longest-serving player, set his side on their way straight from a free-kick at a raucous Villa Park. McGinn's 55th-minute set-piece from out wide evaded everyone inside the penalty area - including Bologna goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski - before landing in the back of the net. The Italians were upset with Portuguese referee Joao Pinheiro as they believed they should have been awarded a free-kick moments earlier. Villa doubled their lead nine minutes later when Jhon Duran marked his first Villa Park start for 11 months by sweeping home from close range. It was his last touch of the game as he was replaced by Ollie Watkins, who was waiting to come on when Duran scored, with Duran showing his displeasure at being replaced by kicking the back of a seat in the dugout. Having beaten Swiss side Young Boys and heavyweights Bayern Munich earlier this season, Villa now have nine points from three games as Emery's side continue to make their return to European football's top club competition for the first time in 41 years look easy.

Match report by Gary Rose, BBC Sport journalistErling Haaland produced a moment of brilliance to help Manchester City maintain their unbeaten record in this season's Champions League with victory against Sparta Prague at Etihad Stadium. After being denied a couple of times by visiting goalkeeper Peter Vindahl, Haaland struck midway through the second half when he cleverly turned in Savinho's cross with an acrobatic backheel volley. Even Haaland looked surprised at the finish he had produced but it gave Pep Guardiola's side some much-needed breathing space after struggling to put away chances following Phil Foden's third-minute strike. The England forward's clinical finish into the bottom corner hinted at City going on to record a big win, but after Vindahl had superbly denied Haaland's header and a second for Foden, they had to settle for a one-goal lead at half-time. Haaland's memorable strike sparked City into gear after the break and John Stones, who got the winner against Wolves at the weekend, added a third with a thumping header. Haaland then got his second of the game with a curled finish to take his Champions League goal tally to 44 at just 24 years old. The hosts then rounded off the win with a fifth in the final few minutes as Matheus Nunes slammed home a penalty for his first Champions League goal. The final scoreline reflected the dominance Manchester City enjoyed and means they have won two and drawn one of their games in the Champions League so far this season. Leipzig 0 Liverpool 1 (Nunez 27)

Match report by Neil Johnston, BBC Sport journalistLiverpool's strong start under Arne Slot continued as Darwin Nunez's goal extended their 100% winning record in the Champions League. Nunez marked his fourth start under Slot with a 27th-minute finish from close range against RB Leipzig as the Reds made it 11 wins out of 12 in all competitions under their Dutch manager. Uruguay forward Nunez turned in a fine shift and went close to a second goal before half-time when his header was tipped over the crossbar by former Liverpool reserve goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, who also denied Virgil van Dijk after the defender was left unmarked at a corner. Liverpool produced a controlled performance in Germany and looked to have won a penalty when Nunez, who was a real menace, was clipped by Willi Orban in the 38th minute only for the officials to wave away the visiting team's protests. There were one or two anxious moments for the Reds before Liverpool were able to celebrate an eighth straight win in all competitions. At 0-0, goalkeeper CaoimhIn Kelleher was almost embarrassed when his weak headed clearance after charging off his line led to a chance for Benjamin Sesko whose curled attempt dropped just wide. Kelleher made amends with smart saves to keep out Sesko and Xavi Simons. RB Leipzig also had two goals ruled out for offside, but Liverpool showed good game management to get over the line and leave themselves in a strong position before Champions League home games against Bayer Leverkusen - managed by former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso - and record 15-time winners Real Madrid. This win means Liverpool join Premier League rivals Aston Villa with three wins out of three in European football's top club competition.

Alonso remains a hugely popular figure at Liverpool after winning the Champions League in 2005 and was heavily touted to succeed Jurgen Klopp this summer until he decided to stay in Germany. Arne Slot was eventually appointed and his outstanding start continued as Liverpool once again recovered from a sluggish first half to overwhelm Leverkusen, who had controlled them comfortably before the break. Luis Diaz broke the deadlock after 61 minutes with a deft lofted finish over keeper Lukas Hradecky from Curtis Jones' pass, Cody Gakpo adding the second two minutes later from Mohamed Salah's cross - the goal initially ruled out for offside before being given after a Video Assistant Referee review. Diaz was on target again with a close-range finish seven minutes from time to give the scoreline an emphatic appearance that did not seem likely in the low-key, uneventful first period. And there was still time for the Colombian to smash home a rebound to take home the matchball after substitute Darwin Nunez had his effort blocked. The win means Liverpool stay at the top of the new Champions League format standings with a maximum 12 points from four games. Sporting CP 4 Manchester City 1 (Foden 4)

Match report by Simon Stone in Lisbon, Chief football news reporterIncoming Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim saved one of his greatest Sporting victories for his last home game to condemn Manchester City to a third successive defeat for the first time since April 2018. It was City’s heaviest defeat since September 2020 and only the second time in his trophy-ladened spell at City that Pep Guardiola has been beaten in three consecutive games in a single season. To cap a thoroughly depressing night for City, star striker Erling Haaland blasted a second-half penalty against the crossbar. Sporting's own Scandanavian superstar Viktor Gyokeres - formerly of Coventry City - did much of the damage with a superb hat-trick. The Swede drove home a 38th-minute leveller to Phil Foden’s early opener and then kept his cool after the break to beat Ederson twice from the spot. The first of those penalties came in a disastrous start to the second half for City as they went behind seconds after the restart as Maximiliano Araujo raced onto a through ball and fired into the corner. Sporting regulars in the media tribune said the victory was the greatest single game of Amorim’s reign, which has one more match to go, at Braga on Sunday. The fear in this part of Lisbon must be that momentum from seven successive victories in all competitions cannot be maintained. Not that it tempered the celebrations at the final whistle. As for Amorim, he joked on Monday that a victory might mean United fans start comparing him to Sir Alex Ferguson That might be a stretch. But, there could not have been a better way to shove a huge amount of credit in the bank.
