Build up to the 2024-25 football season. The opening day fixture on Saturday against Northampton Town will be our 4250th in the Football League which we joined in 1920. The breakdown since then in our previous fixtures is 1558 wins 1084 Draws and 1607 defeats Rovers have scored 6000 goals and conceded 6085. The 6000th goal was scored by Chris Martin on 16 April 2024.

49 more defeats than wins then, that’s a bit demoralising, thought it might of been the other way around.

With 6000 goals scored, and 6085 against, I think I will be more appreciative of a clean sheet.

Those stats pretty much confirm we are the most bang average team in the history of football. Yes we probably are bang average. Having an interesting conversation with my two sons recently. Both brought up in Dorset and both football fans. I failed to make either gasheads, they made their own decisions. I took them both to AFCB for live football when young. The eldest became an Everton supporter (this families second team) whilst the youngest became an AFCB supporter (when they were in division 4 facing extinction, so no glory hunter considering where they are now). The youngest has won the golden ticket insofar as his team is now probably the best of all of ours. Quite amazing. But, and I’m coming to the point of being ‘bang average’, the Everton son said in the conversation it must have been better being a BRFC supporter over the past 15 years than an Everton one. I said why and he explained we’d had 4 promotions and all the excitement that brings to a fan, a few relegations of course but he said that’s also emotional and some Wembley/Millenium appearances. He said all he’d had as an Everton fan was embarrassment of incompetence and relief of not getting relegated. No chance of anything better in the foreseeable future either. It was quite boring. I said he’d had an FA Cup Final appearance and a new ground and that BRFC was also capable of being run incompetently. But to hear him say being a gashead is ‘better and more exciting’ than being an Everton fan was very strange to hear. So perhaps being ‘bang average’ means you’ve had good times as well as bad times. If we’re average I guess it must do. Not so bad then! UTG!

Brett Pitman was playing for Shaftesbury last season in Wessex League before moving on, again. They might be expensive in Lyme Regis but their ground is a beautiful place to watch football, at the top of the hill before dropping down into the town. Played there 50+ years ago. UTG!

Scott Sinclair appointed Captain I see.
· "To become the captain of my boyhood club is a dream come true. I was an eight-year old boy when I came to Rovers, and I came through the ranks here, so it’s a huge honour." 🗣️ | Scott Sinclair

Interesting choice as he isn't always the loudest or most talkative on the pitch. However he does lead by example and is a model professional.

www.ntfc.co.uk/news/2024/august/08/jon-brady-impressed-by-recruitment-work-of-saturday-s-opponents/Jon Brady has been impressed with the summer recruitment work of Saturday’s opponents, Bristol Rovers. "Saturday is a tough start. Rovers have recruited strongly and it is always a tough place to go,” he said. “They have freshened up their squad and it will give them some fresh impetus. "We will respect their strengths and as always, look to exploit any weaknesses we think we can spot but we fully respect the threat they have, while keeping our focus on us. "There are three points at stake. Nothing is ever won or lost in August but we will be doing all we can to secure a good result.”
