Saturday 7th September 2024 - International Test Match Series - Day 2 of 5 - The Kia Oval, Kennington - Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to field
England - 325 all out (69.1 overs) Pope 154, Duckett 86, Brook 19, Smith 16, Rathnayake 3-56, de Silva 2-18
Sri Lanka - 211-5 (45 overs) de Silva 64 not out, Nissanka 64, PHKD Mendis 54 not out, Olly Stone 2-28
Close: Sri Lanka trail England by 114 runs with 5 wickets remaining
Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at The Kia Oval
England gave Sri Lanka a way back into the final Test on a curious second day at The Kia Oval.
The home side squandered wickets to be bowled out for 325 before Sri Lanka reached 211-5, 114 behind.
Like the first day, bad light was a constant threat, at one stage resulting in the bewildering sight of Chris Woakes bowling four balls of off-spin.
Home captain Ollie Pope turned his century into 154 but received little support. Sri Lanka's bowlers were much improved from their poor showing on Friday and, with England's aggression tipping into recklessness, the hosts lost their last seven wickets for 64 runs.
England's ultra-positivity carried into their bowling and field settings, probably because of an eagerness to capitalise on the conditions.
Sri Lanka raced to 50 inside nine overs, led by Pathum Nissanka's 40-ball half-century. He was not deterred by opening partner Dimuth Karunaratne being run-out by Olly Stone's direct hit.
Nissanka became the first Test wicket for debutant Josh Hull when he drove to a diving Woakes at extra cover. With Stone taking two wickets in as many overs, Sri Lanka lost three for seven to slip to 93-5.
Skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis battled and, when the light worsened after tea, England had to bowl spin. Crucially, Hull dropped De Silva on 23.
Sri Lanka were making good progress until the umpires decided it was too dark. By that point, De Silva had 64 and Mendis 54, their stand worth an unbroken 118.

'Don't take the mickey' - Michael Vaughan warns England..by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at The Kia Ovali.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/02/19/89198771-13805713-image-a-20_1725303577697.jpgFormer captain Michael Vaughan has warned England not to "take the mickey out of the game" after a sloppy second day allowed Sri Lanka back into the final Test at The Kia Oval. England lost their last seven wickets in a blur of aggressive shots to be bowled out for 325, then some ultra-attacking fields gave the tourists the opportunity for a swift start to their reply. Sri Lanka reached 211-5, 114 runs behind, when bad light again brought an early end to play. "It just felt like the end of term," Vaughan told the Test Match Special podcast. "With the bat in hand they were very expansive. Would they bat like that against India and Australia? They wouldn't. "They came out and set the field with lots of slips and didn't have a fine leg. It was like when you played school cricket and played a school you knew you were better than." England are looking for a second successive 3-0 series win and a first 100% home summer since Vaughan's team won all seven Tests in 2004. Led by captain Ollie Pope's century, England did well to reach 221-3 on the opening day of the third Test, then wasted the opportunity to post a huge first-innings total on the second morning. Pope moved to 154, but apart from opener Ben Duckett's 86 on Friday, no other batter made 20. Overall, England lost 7-64 in just 100 deliveries. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/06/07/11/71859043-12168979-image-a-87_1686132176487.jpg"England haven't had many bad days this summer. I still expect them to get over the line," added Vaughan, who captained England in 51 of his 82 Tests. "England delight me a lot in the way they play. I like that they do things completely differently. But I sometimes watch and think 'be careful because this game has a way of biting you'. "Don't think you can do things no other player has done in the history of the game - dance down the wicket and whack an away-swinger over mid-off. "Don't take the mickey out of the game. Be very, very careful. There are cricketing gods up there and in a year's time there are tougher challenges. "I would ask England 'were you on it all day like you would be against India and Australia?' If they look themselves in the mirror and say they were, I would say they are lying. They weren't on it today." Harry Brook's approach for his 19 was symptomatic of England's wasteful morning. Brook was dropped on 12, then appeared to mock Sri Lanka's plan of bowling wide of off stump before he drilled a catch to cover. And ex-England captain Sir Alastair Cook said Brook was an example of the hosts' "complacent" approach. "Sri Lanka bowled in the channel outside off stump and he didn't like it," said Cook, the last England captain to win an Ashes series. "He was moaning to the umpire in jest that it was a bit boring and pretended to bat on sixth stump. An over later he slapped one straight to cover. "Rather than finding a method, he was more about trying to talk about it than deal with the situation. "There was an element of carelessness from England today. They could have been so far ahead there was no way Sri Lanka could have come back. I still think they will win this Test, but they have given Sri Lanka a sniff." Olly Stone took two wickets and ran out Sri Lanka opener Dimuth Karunaratne with a direct hit. The fast bowler denied complacency played a part in England's performance. "We've always said about taking the positive option," said Stone. "On another day it goes another way and we get a few more runs on the board. "The way the pitch was, we felt that was quite a lot on there. It nipped around and they have played well and got a decent score."

England currently lead by 132..@70-6 ...Shame that Sri Lanka decided to make a contest of it when the series is done Agree with MV above, England have chucked this test away after treating it as a one day game by batting poorly in the 1st inns... Sri Lanka rallied with a good reply, but England collapsed with only 2 batters getting any notable runs, handing SL a chance of victory.. I know we have won the series, but what about the fans that have been let down by a poor display by England. At 6.25pm and all day monday and tuesday, Sri Lanka require 144 more runs to win with 9 wickets remaining.

Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at The Kia OvalJamie Smith’s pulsating 67 breathed life into England but could not stop Sri Lanka moving into pole position to win the final Test at The Kia Oval. Needing 219, the tourists ended the third day on 94-1 from only 15 overs, 125 runs short of a famous win. Sri Lanka would have been much closer, or may already have the game won had it not been for the brilliance of Smith, who electrified his home ground with some breathtaking batting. England have been awful for large parts of the past two days and were in tatters at 82-7, 144 ahead, when Smith launched his astonishing assault. On 15 from 31 deliveries, Smith clobbered 52 off the next 18 he faced, cleanly striking the ball to all parts. In a stand of 58 for the eighth wicket, Olly Stone contributed only five. With Smith in full flow, thoughts were turning to England’s fastest Test century of all time when he found mid-wicket and departed to a rapturous ovation. England added only another 16 to be 156 all out, Lahiru Kumara leading a magnificent Sri Lanka bowling effort with 4-21. That left Sri Lanka batting twice in the day after earlier being dismissed in their first innings for 263, with England left-armer Josh Hull picking up 3-53 on his Test debut. Pathum Nissanka tucked into some wayward England bowling late in the day. Though Chris Woakes had Dimuth Karunaratne caught and bowled, Nissanka has 53 from only 44 balls, alongside Kusal Mendis on 30.

'One hell of a Test to win' but England 'believe'..Paul Collingwood i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/08/20/89421331-13827279-image-a-106_1725822422606.jpgEngland have the "belief" they can beat Sri Lanka, but Paul Collingwood admitted it will be "one hell of a Test match to win" from the position the hosts are in. Sri Lanka closed day three of the final Test on 94-1, needing 125 more runs to reach their target of 219 and earn a famous win. At 2-0 up, England have already secured the series, yet have been below their best at The Oval. On Sunday, they were bowled out for 156 in their second innings in 34 overs, their shortest Test innings for more than three years. "This team is capable of doing some special things," said assistant coach Collingwood. "We have to have that belief we can turn things around. "Hopefully we can get on a roll. It's an exciting opportunity." England are on a run of five successive Test wins and are looking for their first 100% home summer in 20 years. However, they have been wasteful on numerous occasions at The Oval. From 261-3 in their first innings, the home side were bowled out for 325. At the beginning on the third day, England were able to take the last five Sri Lanka wickets for 52 runs to earn a first-innings lead of 62. Instead of batting the tourists out of the game, England found themselves 82-7 and needed a blistering 67 from wicketkeeper Jamie Smith to set a competitive target. Still, Sri Lanka made a rapid start to the chase and will start the fourth day as favourites. "We're going to need a special day if we’re going to win this match," added former England all-rounder Collingwood. "There will be belief in the dressing room. It will be one hell of a Test match to win from this position. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/02/05/22/53822309-10480799-England_s_assistant_coach_Paul_Collingwood_is_currently_in_Barba-m-12_1644102006356.jpg"We always look at the opportunity, rather than the failures. When you have that optimism, it's amazing what can translate on to the cricket field. We have been in some deep holes at times but have found ways of getting out of them because of the talent in the dressing room." England’s success this summer has come after they pledged to "refine" the Bazball style adopted when coach Brendon McCullum took charge. But some of their batting and field placings at The Oval has attracted criticism. England’s all-time leading run-scorer Alastair Cook said his former team have been complacent, while ex-England skipper Michael Vaughan warned them not to "take the mickey out of Test cricket". Collingwood, who played 68 Tests for England, is a former team-mate of both Cook and Vaughan. "I haven't seen any of the criticism, but we all know it will be out there," he said. "If you don't perform, you will get criticised. That’s fine. "We're not always going to get it right and today was one of those days we didn't get it right. The guys is the dressing room will hold their hands up. "We want to make sure we can have a clean sweep and the lads are very proud about playing for England. We've not felt there has been an complacency coming into this match." That England still have a chance is mainly down to 24-year-old Smith, who thrilled his home crowd with some stunning shots. At one point, the Surrey man took 52 runs from 18 deliveries. And Collingwood compared the wicketkeeper to Adam Gilchrist, the legendary Australian with the ability to destroy attacks from number seven. Collingwood was part of the England side that was hammered by Gilchrist's 57-ball century in Perth in 2006, the fastest ever in an Ashes Test. "It's exciting when he comes in," said Collingwood of Smith. "He's certainly an entertainer. "You go back to the days of when Gilchrist would come in for Australia. It sucks the life out of you as the opposition when someone has the ability to do something like that. In his short Test career, he has shown some great skills."

Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at The Kia OvalEngland went down to their worst defeat under Brendon McCullum as Pathum Nissanka's magnificent century guided Sri Lanka to a famous win at The Kia Oval. England had the opportunity to earn a 100% home summer record for the first time in 20 years but instead paid the price for a careless display. Though Sri Lanka lose the series 2-1, this ends a 10-match winless streak against England and, realistically, gives a measure of success to what was always likely to be a tough tour. Below-par displays on days two and three left England up against it at the beginning of day four, when Sri Lanka resumed on 94-1, needing another 125 to reach their target of 219. Kusal Mendis was bounced out for 39 by Gus Atkinson thanks to Shoaib Bashir's brilliant catch. Another 111 runs were still required, but any England hope was snuffed out by the composure of Nissanka and Angelo Matthews. Nissanka had already passed three figures when Bashir missed a half-chance to catch him at third man. By then, the game had gone. Nissanka ended unbeaten on a quite brilliant 127, Mathews on 32. Their unbroken partnership of 111 gave Sri Lanka victory by eight wickets and only a fourth Test victory in this country. England end the summer with series wins against West Indies and Sri Lanka, though also with a sense of what might have been. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/09/13/89445625-13829723-image-a-13_1725885870239.jpg Pathum Nissanka scored a stunning unbeaten 127 to guide Sri Lanka to a memorable victory

Furious Michael Vaughan calls out England stars for 'disrespecting Test cricket'...by Oli Gamp i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/06/20/03/86347659-13548799-image-a-26_1718851192599.jpgMichael Vaughan has hit out at England for "disrespecting Test cricket" after losing by eight wickets to Sri Lanka in the third and final Test of the series. Ollie Pope's team saw Bazball backfire at the Oval after collapsing from 261-3 to 325 all out in their first innings. In their second innings, England fell to 82-7 before a superb century from Pathum Nissanka guided his side to a famous win. While England still won the series 2-1, former captain Vaughan believes they showed complacency in the third Test and says they "took the mickey out of the game" with their approach. “They disrespected Test cricket and disrespected Sri Lanka by being over-aggressive with the bat and their field placings," he said. “England have made a habit of becoming complacent after a good period and I hope it serves as a wake-up call. It was all a bit flimsy, cocky even. They took the mickey out of the game. The answer in Test cricket’s hottest moments cannot always be attack, attack, attack.” Stand in captain Pope - covering for the injured Ben Stokes - denied claims the team were complacent and instead insisted it was "just one of those days". "I don't think it was complacency at all. It's been a long summer, but that's nothing to do with the fact we lost this game," Pope said. "We still came to play with the same intentions, but this game, for some reason, it didn't quite come off. We didn't get enough runs after having a first-innings lead and I'd probably put it down to that. "It was just one of those days where it didn't come off. We played some really good cricket throughout the series and then in a couple of weeks' time we'll be able to look back on that day three, reflect on it and make a decision then." The defeat meant that England missed the opportunity to enjoy a 100 per cent summer record at home for the first time in 20 years - though Joe Root sought to play it down, insisting "even Coldplay can't be number one every week".
