Ben Stokes to miss rest of summer with hamstring injury..by Jack Skelton, BBC Sport Senior Journalist.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/13/17/88486821-13739749-Ben_Stokes_has_been_ruled_out_of_the_remainder_of_England_s_inte-a-32_1723567011759.jpgEngland Test captain Ben Stokes has been ruled out of the rest of the summer after tearing his left hamstring while playing in The Hundred. The all-rounder will miss England's three-Test series against Sri Lanka, which starts on 21 August, with vice-captain Ollie Pope to lead the side in Stokes' absence. Stokes, 33, was left on crutches following the injury while batting for Northern Superchargers against Manchester Originals at Old Trafford on Sunday. He is aiming to be fit in time for England's three-Test tour of Pakistan, which begins on 7 October. Stokes, who was playing in The Hundred for the first time in three years this season, pulled up after running a single and had to be carried off the field. He had appeared to have returned to full fitness this summer after recovering from surgery on a left knee injury that had limited his ability to bowl. Stokes opted out of the Indian Premier League and T20 World Cup to assist with his recovery, then led England to a 3-0 series victory over the West Indies, taking five wickets at an average of 34.20 in three Tests. He played three times for Northern Superchargers during The Hundred, scoring just four runs and taking no wickets. England host Sri Lanka in the first Test at Emirates Old Trafford from 21-25 August, followed by matches at Lord's and the Kia Oval. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/13/17/88486779-0-image-a-2_1723566293524.jpg"It's a big blow for Ben and England as he's captained the Test team remarkably well," former England captain Michael Vaughan told BBC Two. "Let's hope he can get fit for Pakistan, then New Zealand, then everyone will be thinking about next year - fingers crossed Ben can get this injury right and have a fully fit 2025." Vaughan added it is "certainly not The Hundred's fault" that Stokes got injured playing in the competition. He said: "He could've torn his hamstring any time, it could've happened on the first day against Sri Lanka and affected the outcome of that match." BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew said Stokes' injury is especially disappointing because the captain has been "transformed" by being able to bowl again this summer. "He's been a completely different character, really enjoying himself," Agnew told BBC Radio 5 Live Drive. "This is really bad news, not just for him but the whole momentum England were gaining." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/13/17/88486793-0-image-a-3_1723566326135.jpg

Ian Bell named Sri Lanka batting coach for England tour..i2-prod.birminghammail.co.uk/incoming/article27263336.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_GettyImages-1327995586.jpgSri Lanka have appointed Ian Bell as their batting coach for the three-Test tour of England this month. The former England and Warwickshire batter will begin his role on Friday, with the first Test at Old Trafford starting on Wednesday, 21 August. Bell, 42, played 118 Tests for England between 2004 and 2015, with Sri Lanka hoping to use his knowhow of English cricket to their advantage. "We appointed Ian to bring in a person with local knowledge to help the players with key insights on the conditions there," Sri Lanka Cricket chief executive Ashley de Silva said. "We believe his inputs will help our team in this crucial tour." Bell will work under former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya, who replaced former England head coach Chris Silverwood last month following Sri Lanka's early exit from the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and United States. Bell, who recently worked as part of the Birmingham Phoenix coaching set-up in The Hundred, occupied a similar role during New Zealand's white-ball tour of England last year before the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

Matthew Potts named in England team for first Sri Lanka Test..Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at Emirates Old Trafford.
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/19/15/88684259-13757797-image-a-1_1724076487780.jpg England have recalled Durham seamer Matthew Potts for the first Test against Sri LankaEngland have named Matthew Potts in their side as an extra seamer for the first Test against Sri Lanka at Emirates Old Trafford on Wednesday. The 25-year-old comes in for his first Test in more than year in place of injured captain Ben Stokes, who misses the three-match series with a hamstring injury. It means England have chosen to cover for all-rounder Stokes with a fourth specialist fast bowler, rather than a batter. As a result, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith moves up to number six, followed by Chris Woakes at seven, then Gus Atkinson, Potts, Mark Wood and spinner Shoaib Bashir. In Stokes' absence, Ollie Pope will lead England for the first time, becoming their 82nd men's Test captain. Harry Brook has been promoted to vice-captain, while Dan Lawrence returns for his first Test in more than two years, taking the place of injured opener Zak Crawley. England XI for first Test v Sri Lanka: Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope (captain), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Matthew Potts, Mark Wood, Shoaib Bashir Crawley will miss the series after breaking his finger attempting a slip catch on the final day of the third-Test win against West Indies last month. Both Crawley and Stokes are hoping to be fit for the tour of Pakistan in October. Stokes was at England's training session on Monday and is likely to remain with the team throughout the series against Sri Lanka, but it was Pope and coach Brendon McCullum who addressed the squad. In the absence of injured pace bowler Dillon Pennington, who was in the squad for the West Indies series, Potts gets the nod ahead of Nottinghamshire's Olly Stone. The Durham man won the last of his six caps against Ireland at Lord's more than a year ago and has 23 wickets at an average of 29. Surrey's Lawrence has not played for England since Stokes and McCullum took charge, the most recent of his 11 Tests coming on the 2022 tour of the West Indies. The 27-year-old averages 27 with the bat and has not previously opened in Test cricket. However, Lawrence - who came through the ranks at Essex as an opener - has often opened in white-ball cricket, and done so five times in first-class matches. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/19/15/88684403-13757797-image-a-19_1724076698987.jpgDan Lawrence will replace the injured Zak Crawley at the top of the order for England"One of the biggest strengths of my game is being fairly adaptable to whatever position I need to bat in," Lawrence told BBC Sport. "I've been up and down the order for the last few years. Opening, I haven't done it for a while, but I'm really excited to get out there with Ben Duckett and hopefully put on a show." Lawrence has been around the England squad for most of Stokes' time in charge. He was a reserve batter in the Ashes, on the tour of India and again for the first part of this summer. While it is likely Crawley will come straight back into the side when he is fit, Lawrence could take inspiration from Brook, whose form when he replaced the injured Jonny Bairstow made him a fixture in the England Test side. "I'm not actually looking that far ahead," said Lawrence. "I would obviously love to score loads of runs and give Baz [McCullum] a headache, but I fully understand that the top six for 18 to 24 months have been fantastic and I'm sure as soon as Zak’s fit again, he'll come back in. "I'm just trying to create an impression in these three weeks, really trying to enjoy it and not think about what's going to happen in the future." Pope, 26, has been deputy to Stokes for most of the past two years. The last time England needed a stand-in Test captain was when Stokes deputised for Joe Root on paternity leave in 2020. An England captain has not missed a Test through injury since Michael Vaughan in 2007. Pope has led Surrey in one County Championship match in 2021 and eight times in the T20 Blast this season, skippering a side including Lawrence. "He's very good," said Lawrence. "I don't think he's done a tremendous amount of it for Surrey, but he's obviously a very impressive character and I'm sure he's going to take this week in his stride and really enjoy it. "He's been a very good player for England over the last couple of years, but I'm sure as a leader he'll be just as good." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/19/15/88684321-13757797-image-a-18_1724076584900.jpgOllie Pope will take charge of a Test match for the first time due to Stokes' hamstring injury

Wednesday 21st August 2024 - International Test Match Series - Day 1 of 5 - Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester - Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat.
Sri Lanka - 236 all out (74 overs) de Silva 74, Rathnayake 74, BKG Mendis 24, Woakes 3-32, Bashir 3-55
England - 22-0 (4 overs) Duckett 13 not out, Lawrence 9 not out
England trail Sri Lanka by 214 runs with 10 wickets remaining
Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at Emirates Old TraffordEngland made a strong start to life under Ollie Pope’s temporary captaincy, bowling out Sri Lanka for 236 on the first day of the first Test at Emirates Old Trafford. Pope’s first act standing in for the injured Ben Stokes was to lose the toss. Pope indicated he wanted to field first anyway and his instincts were proved correct as Sri Lanka immediately slumped to 6-3. Mark Wood produced a snorter to remove Kusal Mendis, then Shoaib Bashir a scuttler to pin Dinesh Chandimal, a two-paced pitch with some uneven bounce playing a part in Sri Lanka’s lurch to 113-7. It was captain Dhananjaya de Silva who showed the grit and application to keep the tourists respectable. He added 63 for the eighth wicket with Milan Rathnayake, the seam bowler playing his first Test. Even after Dhananjaya was caught at leg slip off Bashir for 74, Rathnayake continued to 72, the highest score ever made by a number nine on Test debut. When Vishwa Fernando was run out to end the Sri Lanka innings, the light was so poor that England were unable to bowl their pacemen. That meant Sri Lanka had to open the bowling with spin, not necessarily a disadvantage on a surface already turning. In four overs, Ben Duckett and the recalled Dan Lawrence moved to 22-0. Sri Lanka wanted to call on pace, so the umpires intervened over the light, leaving 12 overs unbowled. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/21/21/88778505-13766169-Sri_Lanka_battled_back_from_the_brink_with_Dhananjaya_De_Silva_h-a-5_1724271964264.jpgi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/21/21/88778745-13766169-England_managed_22_with_the_bat_before_bad_light_brought_an_end_-a-8_1724271964267.jpg

Slow outfield, any sort of lead for England should be enough I reckon.

Thursday 22nd August 2024 - International Test Match Series - Day 2 of 5 - Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester - Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat.
Sri Lanka - 236 all out (74 overs) de Silva 74, Rathnayake 74, BKG Mendis 24, Woakes 3-32, Bashir 3-55
England - 259-6 (61 overs) Smith 72 not out, Lawrence 30, Woakes 25, Brook 56, Root 42, AM Fernando 3-68
England lead Sri Lanka by 23 runs with 4 wickets remaining
Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at Emirates Old TraffordEngland nudged ahead of a spirited Sri Lanka on a truncated second day of the first Test at Emirates Old Trafford. Half-centuries from Harry Brook and Jamie Smith took the hosts to 259-6, an advantage of 23 runs, after rain delayed the beginning of the day and bad light brought an early close. The home side had to work hard to keep Sri Lanka at bay. At one stage, England lost three wickets for 37 runs to be 67-3 before Brook added 58 with Joe Root and 62 with wicketkeeper Smith. When Brook was bowled for 56 by Prabath Jayasuriya's ripping turner, England were five wickets down and still 49 behind Sri Lanka's 236. But Smith, already so at home in Test cricket in only his fourth match, found support from Chris Woakes to push England into the lead. They shared England's third half-century stand of the day before Woakes became another victim of the beguiling Jayasuriya. Smith remained unbeaten on 72 when play was abandoned with 22 overs unused, while there is the threat of more bad weather across the final three days of the match. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/22/19/88826049-13770055-Smith_will_resume_day_three_alongside_Gus_Atkinson_with_England_-a-1_1724349952207.jpg Smith will resume day three alongside Gus Atkinson, with England leading Sri Lanka by 23 runs i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/22/19/88826079-13770055-Asitha_Fernando_was_the_pick_of_the_bowlers_taking_the_wickets_o-a-4_1724349952238.jpg Asitha Fernando was the pick of the bowlers, taking the wickets of Duckett, Pope and Root

What a talent Jamie Smith is. Safe as houses behind the stumps, and a prodigious accumulator of runs with the bat. I couldn`t believe it when they drooped Ben Foakes. Now I know why.

Friday 23rd August 2024 - International Test Match Series - Day 3 of 5 - Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester - Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat.
Sri Lanka - 236 all out (74 overs) de Silva 74, Rathnayake 74, BKG Mendis 24, Woakes 3-32, Bashir 3-55
England - 358 all out (85.3 overs) Smith 111, Lawrence 30, Brook 56, Root 42, AM Fernando 4-103, Jayasuriya 3-85
Sri Lanka - 204-6 (60 overs) Matthews 65, PHKD Mendis 56 not out, Karunaratne 27, Woakes 2-34, Wood 1-36
Close: Sri Lanka lead England by 82 runs with 4 wickets remaining
Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at Emirates Old TraffordEngland are moving towards victory over Sri Lanka after an eventful third day of the first Test at Emirates Old Trafford. The tourists closed on 204-6 in their second innings, only 82 ahead at the end of a Friday that began with England’s Jamie Smith completing his maiden Test century. Sri Lanka were in danger of imploding when captain Dhananjaya de Silva was out to Matthew Potts. With Dinesh Chandimal having an X-ray on his thumb after being pinned by Mark Wood, the tourists were effectively 95-5 in their second innings, still 27 adrift. But Angelo Mathews showed some much-needed defiance, dragging Sri Lanka into the lead with 65 in a stand of 78 with Kamindu Mendis. Crucially, England persuaded the umpires to change the ball and got a replacement that swung, with Potts having chances dropped off both Mathews and Kamindu. Mathews eventually poked Chris Woakes to Potts at point and though England will have been concerned by Wood leaving the field midway through an over, his replacement Joe Root needed only two balls to induce a wild hack from Milan Rathnayake. Sri Lanka were at least boosted by the news that Chandimal has avoided a fracture and he returned to move to 20 not out, alongside Kamindu unbeaten on an impressive 56. Earlier, wicketkeeper Smith’s 111 lifted England to 358 and a first-innings lead of 122. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/23/19/88868819-13774061-England_closed_in_on_victory_in_the_first_Test_against_Sri_Lanka-a-1_1724437318982.jpgi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/23/19/88868863-13774061-image-a-4_1724437343896.jpgJamie Smith

Super Saturday 24th August 2024 - International Test Match Series - Day 4 of 5 - Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester - Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat.
Sri Lanka - 236 all out (74 overs) de Silva 74, Rathnayake 74, BKG Mendis 24, Woakes 3-32, Bashir 3-55
England - 358 all out (85.3 overs) Smith 111, Lawrence 30, Brook 56, Root 42, AM Fernando 4-103, Jayasuriya 3-85
Sri Lanka - 326 all out (89.3 overs) Matthews 65, PHKD Mendis 113, Chandimal 79, Karunaratne 27, Woakes 3-58, Potts 3-47
England - 205-5 (57.2 overs) Root 62 not out, Smith 39, Lawrence 34, Brook 32, AM Fernando 2-25, Jayasuriya 2-98
England win by 5 wickets
Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at Emirates Old TraffordJoe Root’s nerveless half-century helped England overcome some significant scares to defeat Sri Lanka on a tense fourth day of the first Test at Emirates Old Trafford. Set 205 for the lead in the three-match series, England were wobbling at 70-3 following the dismissals of Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Dan Lawrence. Root and Harry Brook were required to show the utmost caution as spinner Prabath Jayasuriya caused problems from one end and the seamers probed from the other. Brook could have been caught by flying sub fielder Ramesh Mendis on four when England had 78. The Yorkshire pair added 49 for the fourth wicket, but England still needed 85 when Brook was caught and bowled by Jayasuriya for 32. Root was immaculate, while Jamie Smith provided momentum with 39 from 48 balls. Though Smith was bowled with 22 required, Root was joined by the dependable Chris Woakes and the former captain was 62 not out when a five-wicket win was sealed at 19:16 BST. All this after England endured a concerning morning when Sri Lanka looked primed to post an even larger target. Kamindu Mendis moved to a fine 113 and Dinesh Chandimal 79, their stand for the seventh wicket worth 117 as England struggled without the injured Mark Wood. The second new ball came to the hosts’ rescue, Sri Lanka losing their last four wickets for only 19 runs to be bowled out for 326. Wood, who has a thigh problem, seems likely to miss the second Test at Lord’s on Thursday, leaving Olly Stone set for his first cap in more than three years. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/24/20/88896053-0-image-a-51_1724527161801.jpgi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/24/20/88896049-0-image-a-52_1724527202762.jpg

England - 358-7 (88 overs) Root 143, Atkinson 74 not out, Duckett 40, Brook 33, Kumara 2-75
Close: England are 358 for 7
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/29/19/89075685-0-image-a-1_1724956084373.jpg Joe Root hit superb century to equal Alastair Cook's national record against Sri Lanka i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/29/20/89076713-13793895-image-a-17_1724958288988.jpg Gus Atkinson added some useful late runs for England and finished unbeaten on 74
Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at Lord'sJoe Root’s record-equalling 33rd century ensured England did not waste the chance to bat first on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s. Root’s flawless 143 took him level with Sir Alastair Cook for the most Test centuries for England and was the bedrock of the hosts’ 358-7. Without Root, England would have been in severe trouble, having surprisingly been inserted by Sri Lanka on a docile pitch under blue sky and sunshine. Almost all of the England batters were to blame for their own downfalls, including makeshift opener Dan Lawrence, caught behind walking down the pitch for nine, and stand-in captain Ollie Pope, who was caught off an ugly pull for only one. Root added 48 with Harry Brook and 62 alongside Jamie Smith, but it was only in a seventh-wicket stand of 92 with Gus Atkinson did it feel like England were making the most of the conditions. Root’s controlled innings was ended by a wild moment, an attempt at his trademark reverse-scoop ending in the hands of point. Atkinson remained, completing his maiden Test half-century and attacking the second new ball for an unbeaten 74, accompanied by Matthew Potts on 20 not out. Their partnership is 50 and growing. Former England captain Sir Alastair Cook on Test Match Special: "The hunger Root has, he will keep scoring hundreds. "He's still got that drive to keep piling on the runs and I can't see him slowing down." Former England captain Michael Vaughan: "From the minute Root walked out, we just knew that three figures was coming. He is wonderful, he is the perfect role model for any young player. "He is up there with all the great players." England batter Joe Root: "It feels good at the moment, I'm in a good place. It's not quite perfect, the state where you're barely thinking about it, the way it feels when you're at your absolute best. "In that state, it can feel like you're outside of your body at times."

Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at Lord'sEngland’s Gus Atkinson said he was not surprised by his maiden century in the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s. Atkinson, 26, stroked a sublime 118 to become the first England number eight to make a Test ton in 11 years. It was also the Surrey pace bowler’s maiden first-class hundred, beating his previous best score of 91, and his first century in any sort of cricket since 108 not out in a second XI game against Worcestershire in 2018. “I’ve been frustrated with my batting this year,” said Atkinson. “I know how good a player I can be and I feel like I’ve got so much natural ability with the bat. “I felt like I was moving really well and hitting the ball really cleanly. It was one of those days where it comes off.” Atkinson helped England to 427 all out in their first innings, then chipped in with two wickets as Sri Lanka were rolled over for 196. England opted against enforcing the follow-on and closed on 25-1, 256 ahead.

Great stuff from Atkinson. Went from his overnight 73 to a 100, pretty nervelessly. Took an unbelievable catch to dismiss him. Nice to see England bat again, rather than enforce the follow on. Means an extra day`s entertainment for the fans.

Another century for Joe Root. Genius with the bat; an absolute pleasure to have watched him throughout his career. Can`t see him overtaking Sachin Tendulkar for test runs scored, but only needs another 1,002 runs to be the second highest scorer in the history of the game. Hard to see him not doing that.

Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at Lord'sJoe Root further cemented his status as England’s greatest batter with a record-breaking 34th Test century in the march towards victory over Sri Lanka at Lord’s. Root’s second century of the second Test took him past Sir Alastair Cook for the most tons by an England batter. His 103, made across the third morning and afternoon, was both effortless and inevitable. Made from 111 deliveries, it was also Root’s quickest in Test cricket. When Root became the last wicket to fall, England were 251 all out and Sri Lanka left an improbable record 483 to level the series. In dark and difficult conditions in the evening session, Gus Atkinson accounted for Nishan Madushka and Olly Stone had Pathum Nissanka, both caught by Root at first slip, taking him to 200 Test catches. The gloom closed in. England were forced to bowl the spin of Shoaib Bashir and Root. As the umpires fiddled with their lightmeters, an interruption was so predictable that Sri Lanka promoted Prabath Jayasuriya to number four to see them to the delay. When it came, Sri Lanka had reached 53-2, 430 adrift, with Dimuth Karunaratne on 23 and Jayasuriya on three. Play was finally called off for the day at 18:00 BST. England will return on Sunday knowing they have two full days to take the eight wickets they need for an unassailable 2-0 series lead. England batter Joe Root, speaking to Test Match Special: "That was good fun. "I wasn't nervous. I didn't want the game to stand still, that was the main thing on my mind." Former England spinner Phil Tufnell: "I don't think making Ollie Pope skipper has done him any favours. "He is a great chap and I reckon he is a great vice-captain, but I don't know whether it suits him being captain."

Joeseph Edward Root is England's greatest batter - Michael Vaughan..by Marc Higginson at Lord's, BBC Sport Senior Journalisti.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/31/18/89139863-13800061-image-a-38_1725126986531.jpgFormer captain Michael Vaughan says Joe Root is England's greatest batter after hitting a record 34th Test century for his country. Root, 33, surpassed Sir Alastair Cook's tally of 33 Test tons with his second century of the match in the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's. The right-hander is also just 96 runs from eclipsing Cook's record of 12,472 Test runs for England. "It's not been through crash, bang, wallop," said Vaughan, of Root's technique. "It's been through pure technique and ability. "He is the greatest because he's a wonderful role model as well. He's a fantastic person and a great player." After scoring 143 in England's first innings against Sri Lanka, Root made a sublime 103 in the second innings to spark the hosts' push for victory, with Sri Lanka set a record 483 to win before they closed day three on 53-2. Only six batters have scored more Test runs than Root, with just one - Australia's Ricky Ponting - having a better strike-rate. It is that ability to score so easily that marks Root out, according to Vaughan. "The opposition pretty much always have to have four fielders behind square on the off side because he's just so good," Vaughan told BBC Test Match Special. "You take away four fielders and all of a sudden there are gaps everywhere else. "He's just playing normally, rotating the strike without taking any risk. How often do you look up and he has scored 25 in no time at all?" i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/31/18/89139859-13800061-image-a-40_1725126995280.jpg

Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at Lord'sGus Atkinson’s five-wicket haul eventually broke Sri Lanka’s resistance to give England victory in the second Test and the series with a match to spare. After making his maiden hundred in the first innings, Atkinson became only the third England player to score a century and take five wickets in a Test, and first since Lord Botham in 1984. In front of a sparse fourth-day crowd at Lord’s, the home side were held up by half-centuries from Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal and captain Dhananjaya de Silva. England had the luxury of a mountain of runs – Sri Lanka were chasing a record 483 to win – but had to overcome some benign conditions, belated application from the tourists and two Joe Root dropped catches. The tourists battled past tea, when Atkinson grasped the second new ball to hustle through the tail. He ended with 5-62 to leave Sri Lanka 292 all out and beaten by 190 runs. The victory is England’s fifth in succession and gives them a second series triumph of the summer, following the 3-0 clean sweep against West Indies in July. For Sri Lanka, this is a first defeat in six visits to Lord’s, following five draws stretching back to 2002. It is England's seventh straight Test win over Sri Lanka since the drawn 2016 Lord's Test. The final Test at The Oval begins on Friday, with England looking for their first 100% Test summer since they earned seven wins in 2004. England captain Ollie Pope on Test Match Special: "A good win and some special individual performances from Gus and Joe. "In an ideal world you want to lead from the front with the bat but we're 2-0 up in the series. I haven't contributed in the way I'd have liked but I'd still take that every day of the week." Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva: "We are a much better team than we have shown. "I would have batted first [if I had my time again at the toss]. I got it wrong. But we did really well in the first innings when we were bowling." Former England captain Michael Vaughan: "I hope Gus Atkinson never changes and sticks to that deadpan attitude, I love it. He will have tougher challenges but he's just being himself and enjoying the game." Player of the match, England bowler Gus Atkinson, speaking to BBC Sport: "I have had a good few games here, I don't know what it is. I enjoy bowling down the slope but the batting, I'm not sure!"

Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at Lord'sJoe Root further cemented his status as England’s greatest batter with a record-breaking 34th Test century in the march towards victory over Sri Lanka at Lord’s. Joe Root, a better batsman than Wally Hammond, who made 7,200 runs from 85 games, at an average of 58? And made those runs on uncovered wickets. Not convinced.

Friday 6th September 2024 - International Test Match Series - Day 1 of 5 - The Kia Oval, Kennington - Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to field
England - 221-3 (44.1 overs) Pope 103 not out, Duckett 86, Root 13, Brook 8 not out, Kumara 2-81
Close: England are 221 for 3

Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at The Kia OvalEngland opener Ben Duckett said rules about bad light protect the players after more than half of the first day of the third Test against Sri Lanka was lost at The Kia Oval. Only 44.1 of a possible 90 overs were bowled after a near three-hour break in the early afternoon was followed by the players leaving the field more than 90 minutes before play could have ended. The cricket that did take place was highly entertaining as England moved to 221-3 and scored at five runs per over, but some spectators booed when the umpires made the second intervention over the light. “If it does get more dark and more dangerous, we’re the ones out there playing,” said Duckett. “It’s very easy to sit there as a supporter and want to see more cricket. I think they saw quite a good day’s cricket in the short amount of time there was. That is living and playing cricket in England. They’re the conditions.” England are looking to secure a second successive 3-0 series win and a first 100% home summer in 20 years. Both of the first two Tests against Sri Lanka, at Old Trafford and Lord’s, included delays for bad light, igniting the debate over whether or not cricket is too cautious when it comes to playing in gloomy conditions. In the past, the on-field umpires ‘offered’ the light to the batting team, who could then decide whether or not they wanted to play on. Now, decisions over the light are solely at the discretion of the umpires. Amid an ongoing debate over the health of Test cricket, some argue delays for bad light are damaging the game. Possible solutions would be to use a pink ball for part or all of Test matches, ban short-pitched bowling during periods of poor light, or simply play on through the gloom. Certainly there seemed to be no danger to England’s batters at any point on Friday. Captain Ollie Pope is unbeaten on 103, while opener Duckett added a dazzling 86. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/06/19/89372281-13822597-image-a-54_1725648420405.jpgSpeaking on Test Match Special after an early lunch was called because of the bad light, England managing director Rob Key said: "The way they were going about it, it didn't look like it was dark. What you need is to have a proper look and some proper investment into what is dangerous. "When full floodlights are on, how hard is it to see the ball? I don't think we have ever done a study on that. It is frustrating.” Former England captain Michael Vaughan added: “You go to a pink ball and carry on. Teams will have to accept they get unlucky. All these ideas, you're not going to appease everyone. I just want to see them carry on.” But Duckett said different situations result in different outcomes, pointing to the pacey Australia attack that England encountered on this ground last year. “It depends who you’re playing against it,” he said. “I’m sure if that same Aussie attack last summer was bowling in those conditions, you’d probably want to get off the field. “It does have a big impact when the lights are fully on and the ball starts swinging and nipping around. “It’s got nothing to do with the players. We don’t get the option. The umpires take you off and you have to respect their decision.” i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/06/20/89372697-13822597-image-a-76_1725649662311.jpg
