And Vaughan certainly had an interesting experience, bowling six tidy overs of off-spin for just 16 runs before then out being unluckily run out backing up without facing a ball when Australian Charlie Stobo finger-tipped Andy Umeed's drive onto the stumps. On a day when the four remaining sides who were yet to feature in the competition all played for the first time, two claimed their first wins. Hampshire, thanks largely to 139 not out from Ben Brown, and Somerset, for whom opener Umeed hit a ton were both winners in Group A. “I felt terrible about Archie Vaughan being run out backing up without facing, having bowled so well," Umeed told BBC Radio Somerset. "It was actually quite a good shot I played and just one of those things. I just tried to put it out of my mind and concentrate on completing the job and scoring a hundred."

Both were soon providing a tough examination for the Surrey openers, extracting turn from the second-day pitch. But Burns and Sibley proved up to the challenge and had put together a stand of 41 in 16.2 overs when they were parted. Sibley (16) went to slog-sweep a delivery from Vaughan and failed to clear mid-wicket where Tom Abell took a smart two-handed catch above his head. Burns appeared to survive a chance to wicketkeeper James Rew off Vaughan when on 21 but it mattered little as the left-hander departed without addition, lbw trying to sweep a delivery from the same bowler. A curtailed afternoon session saw Geddes bring up the half-century stand with a boundary off Vaughan, who bowled 19 overs unchanged either side of lunch before switching ends and sending down seven more. Geddes made an impressive 93-ball half-century with six fours but fell soon afterwards as he miscued a sweep off Vaughan and lofted a simple catch to Lewis Goldsworthy at short fine leg. Vaughan ended up taking 6 wickets in the Surrey first innings,where they took a four run first innings lead,thanks to a blustery 80 plus knock from Tom Curran,honours even in this contest,now very weather dependent if Somerset,who need to win to have a chance of the title,some up tempo run rate required to try and force the issue,but the odds of Surrey just' dropping the bat' in their second innings like most of Tuesday's effort are very much in the frame

Somerset lead Surrey by 127 runs with 2 wickets remaining
Teenager Archie Vaughan took 6-102 as Somerset bowled out title rivals Surrey on day three of their County Championship match at Taunton.
The 18-year-old added the wickets of England wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, Jordan Clark and Cameron Steel to the three he collected on the second day as second-placed Somerset restricted Surrey to a lead of four runs.
But he was unable to make a similar impact with the bat in Somerset's second innings, adding only three to his first-innings 44 before being bowled by Shakib Al Hasan playing across the line.
Vaughan is the son of former England captain Michael and playing in only his second first-class match. He appeared for England's under-19 side earlier in the summer and in six games for his county in the One-Day Cup.
He bowled in tandem with fellow spinner Jack Leach, a member of the England squad for the tour to Pakistan, as the pair got through more than 85 overs.
Foakes, who lost his England Test place to Surrey team-mate Jamie Smith, was caught at short leg for 37.
Vaughan then had Clark taken at mid-wicket by Tom Abell and Steel caught behind in the space of three deliveries.
Left-armer Leach did claim the vital wickets of Rishi Patel (70) and Al Hasan (12) before Tom Curran counter-attacked reaching 50 off 33 balls.
Leach ended the innings on the stroke of lunch when Curran was caught at long-on for 86 off 75 balls, including eight sixes, Leach finishing with 4-105.
Surrey began the match 24 points ahead of Somerset, with just two rounds of games left after this one, as they look to make it three County Championship titles in a row.

Just got back from 3 days in Taunton watching the cricket. It’s been a very good match, hard fought by both sides. Surrey batted well yesterday and today and Curran played a superb innings (Grrrr).
Archie Vaughan has had a wonderful second match. On Monday he played so well for his innings. For an 18 year old he had a great first morning scoring 44 esp after losing two wickets. He’s had a fairly experienced last couple of months. Signing his first professional contract, playing well in the one day cup, making his first class debut last week and doing well batting at 6 in the order. This week he was promoted up the order to fill our problem positions, the opening pair and he did very well. Esp facing Worrall and Roach. Looked cool and calm. Then he bowled for a spell of about 15 overs yesterday afternoon and his economy was excellent. Carrying on this morning he totalled 37 overs, 6-102 at an economy rate of under 3. He was out early in the second innings but he must have been tired, after all his bowling and then turning round to open. Dad was there yesterday afternoon and today. I’m sure he’s incredibly proud.
Somerset's batting wasn’t too good today esp after Banton did something to his ankle in the warm up. At 122-8 we all thought it would be over today in 3 days with Surrey winning. But Leach and Overton batted well. We thought 9 wickets would be end of innings so to see Tom B badly limp out to bat was surprising. But he really jarred Surrey off by batting with a runner and batting very well. They clung on and Somerset now lead by 190 which won’t be easy to get although Surrey must still be favourites.
I’d say it was an overall bad day for Somerset because Tom Banton won’t be playing in the T20 Finals after his injury. A great shame, for us though no doubt Surrey, Sussex and Gloucestershire will be happy!
What a great advert for first class cricket from both sides so far with more to come.

Looks like Surrey will now drop anchor and try and bat it out, a sudden rush of wickets has left them with over a hundred still required, Somerset need to claim another 4 wickets,Curran has just entered the fray,but can't see him doing another big bash like his first innings,....edit!! Curran has gone for 5,..3 wickets required 🤞 second edit.....Steel the latest to go Vaughan gets No 5, ...2 wickets required!!
Somerset win by 111 runs, Leach and Vaughan each with 5 wickets... tremendous win

Wow! What a match.
Yesterday afternoon we were pleased to go off with 7 wickets down in mid afternoon for rain. When we came back out we lost the 8th wicket before Jack L and Craig O had a 30+ partnership. I thought I’d see Surrey win in 3 days.
Surrey were chasing 221 in 60 overs. They went so slowly it gave Somerset the feeling they could scramble a draw. If Surrey had just played their normal game I think they would have won.
But I’m glad they didn’t.
A great match and a real advert for red ball cricket.
Game on now for the Championship.

Spinners Archie Vaughan and Jack Leach sparked a dramatic late Surrey collapse as Somerset boosted hopes of a first ever County Championship title with a thrilling 111-run win over the Division One leaders at Taunton.
Chasing 221 to win on a turning pitch, Surrey were bowled out for 111 with less than five minutes left in the game, with 18-year-old Vaughan claiming 5-38 and match figures of 11-140, while Leach finished with 5-37.
Only Dom Sibley (56) and Ben Foakes (20) offered prolonged resistance, but their fourth-wicket stand of 49 in 29 overs looked to have secured a draw before seven wickets fell for 14 runs at the end.
Somerset had extended their second-innings score from an overnight 194-9 to 224 all out, thanks to injured Tom Banton’s 46 and Craig Overton’s unbeaten on 49 after an unlikely stand of 71 gave their side genuine hope of victory.
They claimed 21 points from the game to Surrey’s five and closed the gap at the top of the table to just eight points with two matches to play.
Early rain hit with eight overs lost but Overton and Banton brought up a half-century partnership off 61 balls.
The memorable 65-ball innings ended when Shakib Al Hasan found a way through Banton’s defence and bowled him, leaving Overton one short of a deserved half-century.
Surrey were left with a tricky 13 overs to bat before lunch, but Rory Burns and Sibley negotiated it safely.
The ball began to turn sharply and Vaughan struck a double blow in the 22nd over, having Burns caught behind for 15 and then bowling Ryan Patel for a third-ball duck.
Ben Geddes’ luck ran out in Leach’s next over when he was pinned him in front and at 46-3, Surrey were in a deepening hole.
Sibley and Foakes abandoned any attacking intent and met the nagging accuracy of Somerset’s spinners with a spell of solid defence.
Both were quick to make for the pavilion when rain started falling again at 14:45 BST with the score at 63-3.
A swept single off Vaughan took Sibley to a 165-ball half-century that perfectly suited the situation. But then Foakes edged Leach to Lewis Gregory at first slip and when Sibley’s defiance ended in similar fashion in the left-armer’s next over, panic set in for the visitors.
Gregory claimed a third slip catch to send back Shakib for a duck and give Vaughan his ninth wicket of the match. It became 10 when Tom Curran (5) aimed to cut the 18-year-old and got an inside edge onto his stumps.
Cameron Steel was trapped in front by Vaughan for another duck and Surrey were eight down with a minimum of nine overs remaining.
Jordan Clark and Kemar Roach ran down the overs with an obdurate partnership before the former was bowled by Vaughan for a 47-ball duck.
Last man Dan Worrall came out to be surrounded by close fielders and lasted just two balls before Leach dismissed him lbw to spark wild Somerset celebrations.

I`ve got no recollection of buying it. I can only assume that strong drink had been partaken of.
