Jimmy Anderson to take up role as England bowling mentor following his retirement at the end of the 1st Test against West Indies at Lord's..by Richard Gibsoni.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/05/11/13/84737221-13407001-image-a-126_1715429248049.jpgAnderson, who turns 42 at the end of the month, plays his 188th and final Test match of a 22-year England career against West Indies at Lord's. He will then remain with the squad for the second and third Tests at Trent Bridge and Edgbaston and be part of the support staff for the three-match series against Sri Lanka too. England do not currently have a permanent bowling coach with their Test side. Rob Key, the ECB's managing director of men's cricket, confirmed Anderson would work under Brendon McCullum and might be a part of an English coaching development programme that is being set up designed to keep players with vast knowledge of the world game around the team. 'He has so much to offer English cricket and we don't want to see him go,' said Key, who added that it was yet to be decided whether Anderson would continue to play for Lancashire around his new commitments. Anderson is considering featuring in two County Championship matches in September.

Friday 12th July 2024 - Men's International Test Match Series - Day 3 of 5 - Lord's Cricket Ground - England won the toss and decided to field
West Indies - 121 all out (41.4 overs) Louis 27, Hodge 24, Athanaze 23, Atkinson 7-45
England - 371 all out (90 overs) Crawley 76, Pope 57, Brook 50, Root 68, Smith 70, Seales 4-77
West Indies - 136 all out (47 overs) Athanaze 22, Holder 20, Motie 31 not out, Anderson 3-32, Atkinson 5-61
England win by an innings and 114 runs
IMO not a cricket match at all, very poor, WI batted for 88.4 overs in 2 innings, England batted for 90 once. Just about 2 full days play overs wise, WI best batter score was by a bower Motie who hit 31 not out...

Thursday 18th July 2024 - Men's International Test Match Series - Day 1 of 5 - West Indies won the toss and decided to field
England - 416 all out (88.3 overs) Pope 121, Duckett 71, Stokes 69, Woakes 37, Hodge 2-44, Sinclair 2-73
England lead West Indies by 416 runs

Report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at Trent Bridge.Number-three Pope arrived with the hosts 0-1 and caressed 121, adding 105 for the second wicket with Ben Duckett, who scored rapidly in the first hour. Opener Duckett may have to leave this match if his partner goes into labour and batted like a man in a hurry, hitting the first four legal deliveries he faced for four. He was threatening England’s fastest century in Test cricket until he was dismissed for 71 from 59 balls. Pope took advantage of being dropped on 46 and 54 to reach three figures from 143 balls, before captain Ben Stokes made a welcome 69. The skipper was one of a number of England batters who found a way to get out, particularly to off-spinner Kevin Sinclair and left-armer Kavem Hodge. In a chaotic end to the day, England lost their last five wickets for 74 runs, West Indies took their tally of drops to four and Mark Wood survived a stumping chance off Hodge. Wood and Chris Woakes pushed England past 400, then the latter and Shoaib Bashir fell in successive overs, Bashir to the final ball of the day. England, 1-0 up and with the chance to win the series, are in a strong position, but one that could have been stronger.

Wow, what a great 2 days of this test match so far, 767 runs for 15 wickets, we have a possible 5 day match on our hands...

Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at Trent Bridge.Kavem Hodge’s maiden century rallied West Indies and defied England on a compelling second day of the second Test at Trent Bridge. Hodge, a 31-year-old playing only his fourth Test, should have been caught on 16 by Joe Root, but instead went on to make 120 to breathe life into the tourists and the series. From 84-3 in response to England’s 416, Hodge added 175 for the fourth wicket with the similarly impressive Alick Athanaze, who contributed 82. Hodge reached his century by driving Ben Stokes for four and celebrated by leaping into the arms of batting partner Jason Holder. He was eventually lbw to Chris Woakes, leaving Holder and Joshua da Silva to take West Indies to 351-5, 65 behind. In sapping heat, England worked hard in their first day in the field since the retirement of bowler James Anderson. Mark Wood enthralled the crowd with some lightning-fast bowling, but had to leave the field in the evening session with what England hope is nothing more serious than cramp. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/7/19/2682412e-9982-4fa7-90d3-99b0b311d79d.jpg

Match report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief Cricket Writer at Trent Bridge.England recovered from a chaotic morning to build a healthy lead over West Indies on the third day of the second Test at Trent Bridge. The hosts ended the day on 248-3, taken to an advantage of 207 runs by a classy unbroken partnership of 108 between Joe Root and Harry Brook. England ended the day on top, yet were anything but when Joshua da Silva and Shamar Joseph were adding 71 for the last West Indies wicket. Efficient with the second new ball, England reduced the tourists to 386-9, still 30 behind, only for Ben Stokes’ side to employ some baffling tactics and surrender the initiative. England spread the field for Da Silva in the hope of exposing Joseph and instead released the pressure. Da Silva clobbered three sixes and Joseph two of his own, one that showered spectators with broken roof tiles. When Joseph was finally out for 33, Da Silva was stranded on 82 not out and West Indies had reached 457, their largest total in this country since 1995. England’s deficit of 41 was wiped out by 76 from Ben Duckett and 51 by Ollie Pope, only for the match to swing again when both were dismissed in the space of eight Alzarri Joseph deliveries. But Brook moved to 71 not out and Root an unbeaten 37 to leave England favourites to win the Test and the series.

Friday 26th July 2024 - Men's International Test Match Series - Edgbaston, Birmingham - 3rd Test.
Report by Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer at Edgbaston.
Captain Ben Stokes says opportunities for fast bowlers will come “naturally” after England named an unchanged team for the third Test against West Indies on Friday.
The home side have already won the series 2-0 but have resisted the opportunity to recall Matthew Potts or hand a debut to Dillon Pennington at Edgbaston.
James Anderson retired after the first Test following talks with the England management, who indicated they want to build the experience of younger bowlers.
"At the moment we have stuck with the same team because we don't feel it's necessary to change," said Stokes.
Following the West Indies series, there is a break of almost a month before three Tests against Sri Lanka.
So far this summer, the only change England have made to their XI is moving on from Anderson. England's all-time leading wicket-taker played in the first Test at Lord's, then was replaced for the second Test by Mark Wood.
Since Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum took charge of the England side two years ago, they have looked to avoid rotating their bowlers where possible.
And Stokes said it is not "difficult" for England to simultaneously play their strongest team and give opportunities to bowlers.

Friday 26th July 2024 - Men's International Test Match Series - Edgbaston, Birmingham - 3rd Test - Day 1 of 5 - West Indies won the toss and decided to bat
West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite: "We're going to have bat. The pitch looks a good one and the weather is good so we've got to utilise that. "The last Test was important but we've got to work extremely hard. At least it shows we can get it down so we've got to work hard and get it done. "We fully back our top six and we look forward to seeing some good things from them here. "It is just belief. England will come hard and we've got to work extremely hard." England captain Ben Stokes: "When you have two very dominant performances, it's hard to make changes. Everyone has stood up, so hopefully we can do the same again this week. "You come to Edgbaston and wicket always looks a belter. Not winning the toss allows us the opportunity to continue our good work with the ball. "We've always been able to put West Indies under pressure. Hopefully we can do the same again." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/7/26/07ffd687-c11e-4815-89eb-629b3a4d4ffa.jpg

Friday 26th July 2024 - Men's International Test Match Series - Edgbaston, Birmingham - 3rd Test - Day 1 of 5 - West Indies won the toss and decided to bat
West Indies - 282 all out (75.1 overs) Brathwaite 61, Holder 59, Da Silva 49, Lois 26, Atkinson 4-67, Woakes 3-69
England - 38-3 (8 overs) Crawley 18, Pope 6 not out, Root 2 not out, Seales 2-19, Joseph 1-10
Close: England trail West Indies by 244 runs with 7 wickets remaining
Match report by Timothy Abraham, BBC Sport Journalist at Edgbaston. England can still rack up a huge total against West Indies at Edgbaston despite losing late wickets on day one of the third Test, according to Chris Woakes.
Openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were dismissed before the close along with nightwatcher Mark Wood to leave England on 38-3 in response to West Indies’ 282.
Both Crawley and Duckett were out playing expansive drives and Woakes acknowledged on this occasion their attacking style "didn't come quite come off".
The all-rounder, however, is confident England's middle order can make amends on a pitch which still looks good for batting.
Joe Root and Ollie Pope will resume unbeaten on two and six respectively on Saturday.
"Naturally you'd like to go into the close no more than one down, so you have to give credit to the West Indies for coming out in what's a tricky period I suppose to take three wickets," said Woakes, in familiar surroundings as a Warwickshire player.
"We always try and take the positive option, particularly the two openers - they always look to make it hard for the opening bowlers.
"But at the same time it's still a good batting surface and going into day two we've still got two top players at the crease and then a middle order which can build partnerships and hopefully put on some big runs."

It was about keeping everyone in the same position. A couple hit the middle of the bat, I was seeing it quite well. "Colly's the record man in the dressing room, he likes to keep track - he told me [about his fastest England fifty] upstairs. "Wood was unbelievable this afternoon. That was his reward he deserved after last week. To see him bowling not just fast but with extreme skill. And when the ball's swinging he's very difficult to face. That's why you want express pace in your team. When the game's there to take hold of, you throw him the ball. It's reward he got for a fairly luckless six or seven days of Test cricket. "Not only with the bat, I think Jamie's been incredibly tidy behind the stumps without being noticeable. The two big innings that he played were a great sign of him understanding that role without really playing it all that much. A sign of his character is that he was happy with his 95, he wasn't thinking about his personal milestone, he put the team first." On being a fourth seamer: "It makes a massive difference, I feel like I've got plenty more. I quite liked using Woody and Bash together, for their contrast. It massively helps the team out, in terms of the shape of the team, but it's also good for me too. "You've got to take every game as it comes. Fast bowling is tough on the body, a few guys might rest The Hundred to make sure they're ready for Sri Lanka." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/7/28/8a7a2bad-94ca-4c6d-938f-136642c3b38a.jpgEngland bowler and player of the match Mark Wood: "I was in a bit of a bad fettle actually at lunch and I was wondering if it was something I was doing wrong or if I wasn't quite getting the right length. "I had a great conversation with Jimmy [Anderson], and a couple of the other backroom staff, and he just said, rather than thinking about the outcome, to start thinking about the skill element. "So, after the lunch break, all I tried to do was focus on running hard again and that skill element of moving the ball. So I got into that rhythm of it clicking because I wasn't thinking about the other stuff. That first wicket gave me a lot of confidence and I was able to push on from there." On whether it has been a frustrating Test Series for him: "Yes, I think so. I'm really proud that I managed to keep my pace up throughout, but I was disappointed that I wasn't getting wickets. "If I ever face a high-pacer [like myself] at the tail end, I'm always thinking that I won't be able to last long [at the crease], but I just couldn't get any wickets! "So, it was frustrating - yes."

i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/07/28/20/87867117-0-image-a-70_1722195481543.jpgBen Stokes set a record for the fastest Test half-century by an England batter as his side won the third match of their series against West Indies at Edgbaston by 10 wickets. Captain Stokes reached the mark in 24 balls, beating Ian Botham's 28-ball fifty from 1981 against India in Delhi. The 33-year-old Stokes deputised as an opener because Zak Crawley was having a scan on a broken index finger on his right hand. Stokes immediately attacked as England needed just 82 to secure a 3-0 series clean sweep. He finished on 57 not out, with nine fours and two sixes, as England raced to their target in 7.2 overs. At one stage Stokes was on 41 from 18 balls and could have beaten the men's Test record of 21 balls for a half-century, set by Pakistan's Misbah-ul-Haq against Australia in 2014. Typically, Stokes played down his innings, telling BBC Test Match Special: "A couple hit the middle of the bat, I was seeing it quite well." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2021/07/03/16/44994303-0-image-a-49_1625324696650.jpgIan Botham Stokes also said he did not know he had definitely broken the record until he spoke to England assistant coach Paul Collingwood in the changing room. "I didn’t but when I brought it up Ducky [opening batter Ben Duckett] said it could be the fastest but Colly is the man upstairs who likes keeping track of all the little records that players make as individuals so he told me upstairs. It’s pretty cool," Stokes said. Head coach Brendon McCullum added: "When Zak had to go and get an X-ray, Stokesy said he would open and that is fantastic from your leader. The way he struck the ball was absolutely beautiful." Stokes will now play four games for Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, before leading England in the three-Test series against Sri Lanka from 21 August.
