Our new defender has signed a three year contract.
CLINTON LEMERE MOLA
Born 15.3.2001 Camden, London
6’; 12 st 9 lbs Defender
Career: AS United, Islington; 2015 Chelsea; 13.1.20 VfB Stuttgart (£400,000) [6+6,0]; 1.9.22 Blackburn Rovers (loan) [1+3,0]; 26.8.23 Reading (free) [19+11,0]; 25.6.24 Bristol Rovers (free).
Strong defensive player Clinton Mola joined Rovers ahead of the 2024-25 season. A left-back who could also play across the defensive line, he had shown great promise as a youngster and represented his country at many age levels. With heritage from the Democratic Republic of Congo, he had played for England at Under-16 level (five caps), Under-17 (five caps and a goal), Under-18 level (seven caps and a goal as captain in a 2-2 draw with Slovakia in May 2019), Under-19 level (six caps) and Under-20 level (three caps and a début goal in a 6-1 victory over Romania at St George’s Park in September 2021), before winning one cap at Under-21 level in a 3-2 defeat to Georgia in Batumi in November 2021. At Chelsea played alongside Billy Gilmour, Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi, he scored six goals in 52 domestic Under-23 matches, the final one coming in a 3-3 draw with Derby County Under-23, when set up on the hour mark by future England international Marc Guéhi. He also received a red card in Chelsea Under-18’s 6-0 victory over their counterparts from Swansea City in February 2019. With Chelsea he helped secure an Under-18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup double in both 2016-17 and 2017-18. Sold to Stuttgart, he played alongside Mario Gomez and Holder Badstuber, whilst also marking Kai Havertz in his first appearance, as Stuttgart played Bayer Leverkusen in the German Cup in February 2020, and he played in a 6-0 away victory at Nürnberg in June of that year. Having missed the 2020-21 campaign with a hip injury, he then first appeared for Blackburn Rovers in a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Bristol City in September 2022 and equally appeared in eleven games for their Under-21 side; this Under-21 side reached the Premier League Cup Final that year, but Mola had left the club by then. A first Reading game in a 1-0 defeat at Cambridge United in September 2023 prefaced a season which also saw a 2-1 loss at non-league Eastleigh in the FA Cup and Mola played as Reading won 2-0 against Rovers at The Mem over Easter 2024.
