Good news in my view. Jed Ward deserves every bit as much support as Tim Carter and Nigel Martyn received at much younger ages from admittedly more accomplished and progressive managers than the current incumbent.

Does he? He did reasonably well last season and put in some good performances but I would be extremely concerned if he was our first choice keeper going into the season. Martyn is the best keeper to have played for either Bristol club. Ward will do well to reach the level of Steve Phillips IMO.

Well I wonder what your opinion would have been if you turned up at Bath and saw 16 year old Tim Carter between the sticks. Nigel Martyn was the best goalkeeper of his era however the best I’ve seen would be Bernard Hall or Dick Shepard by country miles. The issue in my view is we’ve fallen into the trap of falling for the ‘experience’ tag. I wonder what sort of money this Dawson character was asking for, probably in excess of 5 grand a week plus signing on fees and other emoluments. We’ve got to get out of the valueless mentality these characters agents take advantage of. Darryl Clarke’s first actions on being relegated to the conference were to dump out the overpaid pussies we’d taken in and bring in players that would fight for the shirt not just turn up for the reduced wages. Ward bleeds blue and white and I for one am more than prepared to allow him to reach whatever level he can.
