Democrats have been riding on a surge of enthusiasm since Harris became their nominee, but polls suggest the election remains extremely tight

BBC Verify - Is Harris right about nationwide abortion ban?
In her speech, Kamala Harris claimed Donald Trump "would... enact a nationwide abortion ban”.
This is misleading because during this campaign, Trump has said that he would not sign a national abortion ban, and that he believes the issue should be left to individual states.
As president, Trump appointed three justices to the Supreme Court who voted to overturn Roe v Wade - which had protected the fedearl right to abortion for nearly 50 years.
As a result, 22 states currently ban abortion, external or restrict the procedure to earlier in pregnancy than was set by Roe v. Wade. In 14 of those states, abortion is banned in almost all circumstances with 10 not even making an exception for rape or incest.
Four takeaways from Kamala Harris's convention speech..Anthony Zurcher, BBC North America correspondent
1..Harris promoted her middle class roots
She began by speaking about her upbringing in San Francisco as the daughter of an immigrant from India, saying “the middle class is where I come from”.
2..A vision for the future - with few details
Her speech included calls for unity and a pathway beyond the “bitterness, cynicism and divisive battles” of modern American politics.
When she did turn to policy details, she spoke in generalities, saying she would focus on lowering the costs of “everyday needs” such as healthcare, housing and groceries, and “building” the middle class.
She specifically called out abortion rights – and framed it as a means of preserving freedom, which has been a recurring theme at this Democratic convention.
3..An unchanged Gaza war message
As pro-Palestinian protesters marched outside the convention, Harris devoted particular attention in the foreign-policy section of her speech to the Gaza war.
She echoed the rhetoric of the current President, Joe Biden, saying they are working round the clock to get a hostage deal and ceasefire.
4..Trump is an 'unserious man' but serious threat
She described her opponent, Donald Trump, as in many ways an “unserious man”, but warned the consequences of putting him back in office would be “extremely serious”
Trump himself posted on social media throughout her remarks, criticising her performance.

Having heard some of her speeches it seems incredible to me she has risen to such a position. I imagine Trump will wipe the floor clean with her when they have the televised debate.

She sounds like a complete idiot to me, "unserious" ffs, I am hoping for a Trump win and that the World will return to peace as in his first term,if however Harris wins I think that it will be a torrrid time for the USA and the Chinese will take advantage of that.

The best quip of the lot ( prior to her speech)which I never watched) was Bill Clinton, former president from god knows how long ago, " And I am STILL younger than Donald Trump" just shows again how antiquidated that country is when people, almost octogenarians are going for the " biggest job in the world" Get Trump back in there for four years, then the great, youthful Vivek Ramaswamy takes over after winning the race in 2028..

Exactly, I don't understand how people still go with the narrative that Trump is a danger to world security? We had four years of him before, and the world 'internationally' was the safest it had been for decades. As soon as Biden got in, Putin pounced, as did China and Iran. They saw weakness. Trump maybe alot of things, but weak is not one of them, and those on the East know that.

For me it's not what she said on policy details, which is never much is there at these conventions, it's about appealing to the "undecided", the voters who are not tribal, and are open to persuasion. Given the hard stances of Pro Trump and Never Trump, about 80% split evenly, how many of the 20% scattered across 5 or 6 States will be persuaded to vote for her or Trump. It's a close call, but she has momentum, coming from nowhere to evens with Trump. During this period Trump has continued to typing on social media, given rambling incoherent speeches and lying as soon as he speaks. If this carries on I am optimistic (yes I support the democrats) she can confine Trump to history. I hope so Since when have you supported the Democrats? This is total news to me. 😎🙈 She is incapable of debating Trump, or winning.Hate him, or just loathe him...Trump is an incredible talker in these debates. He went easy on Biden a few months ago,as it wouldn't have been a good look for him to go guns blazing on sleepy Joe. With Harris, it's going to be the Trump of old, like he was against Hillary. Since the 1980s when I was living there, in answer to your question. I couldn't vote, obviously, but I did some canvassing work for them in the county I lived in when we were trying to put a resolution on the ballot paper to raise property taxes, in order to build desperately needed new schools. We got it on, it was passed and the schools got built. In terms of Trump's debating style, he is a paper tiger. Biden trounced him in the debates leading up to the last election and Harris, a former Attorney General for California will be well versed in getting a valid point across. And, she will not be weighed down by the baggage the Hilary Clinton carried. It's going to be close and plenty of hurdles for either candidate to trip over on. We shall see

The view from America "“Simply put,” she said, “[the abortion foes] are out of their minds.” It is Trump and his allies who are out of the mainstream, she argued. Similarly, it was a not-so-subtle attack on Trump’s patriotism when she vowed to “always honor, and never disparage” the service and sacrifice of the military. If you were looking for a litany of policies, you will have to look elsewhere. But as a speech whose goal was to connect with the broad impulses of the electorate, with repeated avowals of American greatness, and to present the nominee as a no-nonsense, tough-minded leader who holds the same values as most Americans, it accomplished its purpose." We shall see Oldie, I didn't ask if you were a Democrat supporter...😆 I was being sarcastic, as it's very obvious that you are! 😂 Out of interest, where did you live over there, and for how long? I've spent around 3 months in total there over the course of five trips.I always wanted to live there, well that was until I went there..😂 I've only been to New York/New Jersey, Florida and Georgia tho. I would love to go right across the USA one day though, starting with Tennessee and Texas.

Duh...being a bit thick today (alright alright I know) I moved there in 1982 and came back in 1996, finally, after a couple of years of back and forth. I have travelled to most States, work and pleasure. My two sons are resident there, one in North Carolina the other in Washington State. I used to love long drives there, it is the best country in the world for doing that. Key West to Long Island via the Appallation Trail is superb. I also did coast to coast across the South...that was fantastic. Memories, never to be forgotten.
