On this day in 1953 Bristol Rovers achieved their first promotion since entering the Football League in 1920. They defeated Newport County at Eastville 3 goals to one with a remarkable hat trick from Geoff Bradford. It recorded his 33rd league goal a club record. Bradford had opened the scoring in the first minute before County equalised. Geoff remained Rovers lead five minutes before half time with a firm header from a Pitt free kick. He completed his hat trick to the relief of the fans from another powerful header on 70 minutes to send fans ecstatic with delight.
The predominantly Bristol born side took the third division south championship and heralded their best spell in the Second tier where they competed until 1962. One two occasions they seriously challenged for promotion to the top flight finishing sixth in 1955-56 and 1958-59.

Bristol Rovers 3 Newport County 1 - 25th April 1953 - Division Three (South) - Attendance 29,487.
It would be a further 28 years before we would play Newport County again, Nov 1981 in division 3.
The next huge gap of time between us playing them would be from May 1987 to Aug 2013.
